God I love this movie! The cinematography is just breathtaking. Tom Hardy is just superb as the main Spitfire pilot - most of his dialog behind an oxygen mask. The air-to-air scenes are, to my estimation, the finest, most realistic WWII aerial combat since the movie "The Battle of Britain". Zimmer's score is outstanding too....love the use of the ticking clock. --- Wish I had seen this on IMAX!!!!

Here are some of my favorite scenes....I could look at Spitfires forever!!!

Just a little bit of info that Ticking Clock is actually Nolan's pocket watch that he had on him during filming.

& having re watched on BR it just gets better on a re watch not only the spitfire scenes but the escape from the torpedoed evacuation ship.

I will tell you, that by the end, I had mixed feelings about the movie as a whole. I'm one of those people that will quietly sit and dismantle a movie if It feels contrived in any way, or is filled with what I perceive as artistic expression and/or interpretation of an event that is actual history.

When this one concluded, I sat and regarded it in the back of my mind from beginning to end and finally just quietly nodded to myself...I thought it was a beautiful masterpiece.

I was never one to overly enjoy "quiet movies" that had little dialog, as they seemed to be slow (like this one) but one has to "LISTEN" to the world in the absence of the words and let yourself be immersed in those moments...I've learned that it means more.

The things that really stuck to me about this movie were the cinematography and the sound editing which were superb...hell, unequaled...and it made the story.

Afterwards, I reflected back to the movie "Valhalla Rising", which I first thought was bizarre and slow due to the scarce dialog, but like Dunkirk, the sound and cinematography was what made the movie an "Experience". Watch it.

I honestly didn't see what was so great. It looked good, yes, but definitely lacked emotion. I am in no way saying it sucked because it doesn't. But it was a bit empty and lacks context.

i'm not only a huge fan of this kind of deliberately emotionally disconnected film, but this one in particular.
i don't need to know anything about Hardy's pilot without loving his heroism unconditionally.

i almost wish we had gotten more from the boat folks and more from the officers, but all-in-all easily my choice of best film for 2017.
which is not to take anything away from TLJ, which i do love and will no doubt watch more often and get more joy from; but Dunkirk is just gorgeous and meditative and sweeping in a way that The Thin Red Line is, and that's a class all its own.

    Thus is Christopher Nolan.
Dunkirk is a masterful execution of film.
It's pacing, editing, sound, score, cinematography are all just magnificent.
However...it really does lack emotion and characters. You don't really get names and that's his goal.
It either works for you or it doesn't.

2017 was the year of the 'Victory in defeat' theme. I absolutely love this movie. I am fascinated with movies that play with time in their narratives. In this respect Arrival and Dunkirk are very much alike when you think about it.

    What an amazing film!

I love the Spitfire too, the most beautiful plane ever made and the greatest fighter of WW2. A real life X-Wing.

    Absolutely loved this film.

My favorite part, I think, is how the Axis army is never actually seen (outside of aircraft, and at the tail end of the film) yet their presence is felt heavily throughout the entire movie. It's horrifying, and incredibly intense.

I'm also always a sucker for that Churchill speech at the end..

I am rooting for Dunkirk or Get Out to win Best picture. I am so glad that I saw Dunkirk on the big screen, but I wish I had watched it more than once. Every time the dive bombers came in I felt as if they were coming at me. Dunkirk was my favorite film of last year, I had that as the best of the Best Picture noms:
