I like the part about Kylo's mask and its symbolism. People were already speculating about the exact same thing.

The part about JJ not really having planned out anything is interesting because Daisy Ridley said, that he did have a treatment. Hm...

But surely he wrote a treatment before writing the script of TROS. That’s standard procedure. The treatment is just a summary, which probably changes quite a bit during the script writing process. As he says, better ideas come to you on the go.

I think we have to careful not to take "You can't plan everything in advance" as 'You can't plan anything in advance'. There's a bit a of a difference.

It seems kind of factual (or at least very likely) that certain things were planned, even if just a handful of plot/character points. Not that I'm saying even those couldn't change, like JJ says, but I think there are a few elements that have at the very least been utilised that were mentioned or alluded to in material that existed before TFA was released.

I'm thinking of things like Kylo searching for Sith artifacts, Adam Driver having the idea in his head from the beginning of where it was all headed for his character(s?) (or whatever the quote was), JJ's ideas on Rey's origins (maybe? Could have changed after TLJ? Or not?) and then we have Kathleen Kennedy's insistance that Palpatine's return (in whatever form we get) was something that was planned/intended all along... I also think there is maybe somehting in the idea that kids going missing (was that mentioned in Aftermath first, I forget... ?) might be relevant/intended as part of a 'breadcrumb' trail towards the ST's conclusion, but I guess we'll see... it's a bit of a ...Temple of Doom notion isn't it? Or is it? *DJ voice* Maybe.

In any event, I think it's going to be very interesting to go back through the mountain of material we have once TRoS is released, I suspect there will be far more clues in the canon EU and even the two films we already have than many of us realised, however much that was intended or retro-actively shaped Episode IX.

Of course he and Terrio wrote a treatment before writing the script. That's obvious. But that's not what I'm referring to. The article says that JJ didn't have time to plan anything for EpVIII or IX while working on TFA.

This shows one of the major problems of the ST. The schedule is too tight. Three years between each movie - like for the PT - would be better.

Yes, he said they were working under pressure just trying to complete VII, which meant that whatever general overarching theme or development there was for the whole trilogy was completely at the service of the film at hand, VII, because they had to really deliver with it... Those overarching themes seem to have been discarded by RJ, who created his own direction by offering an “other other side of the coin” scenario, instead of building on what had been set up in VII.

Terrio and JJ seem to understand perfectly what RJ did and want to respect it while still honouring the loose ends from VII. I feel they probably think the storytelling would have followed a similar trajectory, even if most of it had been planned beforehand and written just by one writer. Better ideas just come to mind as characters develop their own voices, and a crucial structural element that may not have been obvious when writing the preliminary summary of the whole trilogy, may just show up when writing the 3rd act and knowing your characters and conflict better.

That was Ochi leaving Rey in Jakku after the death of her parents. The question then becomes did Ochi kill her parents or was he there when it happened and left Rey with Unkar
