JJ Abrams and Dan Mindel (director of cinematography) are not strangers. Dan Mindel is known for his work on The Amazing Spiderman 2, and John Carter. In the past they have worked together on such projects as Star Trek Into Darkness, and Mission Impossible 3. Because JJ has chosen 35mm film over digital photography, Mindel’s job becomes even more important. The decision to use film however contradicts George Lucas’s adaptation of the digital medium.

Phantom Menace was the last of the Star Wars movies to get the film treatment. Since then digital photography has made incredible improvements. The goal for advancements in digital is to mimic the look and feel of film, both in clarity and depth of field. Projectionist at your home theatre change the way the films are viewed, sometimes to the dismay of the directors. Currently about 75% of theaters use digital projectors eliminating the color differences and unifying viewing experiences.

The advantages in shooting with digital cameras are obvious. Since the early age of digital technology cameras have become smaller and smaller, meaning more portable. Ultimately this gives directors more opportunities to use handheld shots in their films and adjusting the viewing angle at a moments notice. Post production is also made easier. Light and color can be adjusted instantaneously by turning a knob as opposed to the old photochemical method. The production staff no longer needs to waste time slicing segments of film together. When shooting in low light digital cameras are prefered because of enhanced clarity. The director and the cinematographer can sit in the booth with the color team and see the changes right away. No reloading time also means actors can stay in character longer. This medium saves on time, and overall cost of production.

The advantages of shooting in film however are equally appealing. The fact that JJ Abrams chose to shoot on film came at no surprise and at this point is old news. Film can be converted into digital for editing and then converted back into film. Practical effects are better with film, and characters on screen will appear more lifelike. For Star Wars this is good because we want to see more models and real explosions. But what does this mean for the look of the new Star Wars and will future directors follow JJ’s lead and embrace film?

The difference between film and digital photography might not be obvious to everyone. The way the camera picks up light is the main appeal. Texture and grain Structure feel more tangible. Overall the feel of the film changes for the audience even though it may go unnoticed. For Star wars Fans everywhere this has been viewed as a good decision by the production staff. With this choice JJ also adds to the continuity Star Wars, proving his commitment to draw inspiration from the original series.

let me know what you think below.

Mods please forgive me if there is already and existing thread on this. i searched and didnt find anything. Im sure at some point this has been discussed on of the threads.

We might be viewing them digitally but the way they are made makes a big difference on how they look post production in home and theater. there are a surprising number of movies that use film. Django Unchained, Hunger Games, War Horse, Life of Pi. just to name a few...

I understand the discussion is important but to just add my two cents, I'm just not fussed. I enjoyed Django just as much as The Avengers. In the end i was more interested in Christoph Waltz's performance in Django and the action/intensity/Comedy of the Avengers movie to really worry/notice the differences.

I guess I see it as a very personal choice, you have Tarantino who is hugely behind 35mm and i love his films, and on the other hand i love a lot of movies that are probably digital. I think it solely comes down to filmmaker preferences.

The only cinema i despise is 3D and i have yet to hear a convincing argument for what it brings to the cinema experience over a well shot "regular" movie.

I loved the decision of JJ using 35mm for TFA, not only that and the use of the IMAX cameras, can't wait to see those scenes in the IMAX screen.

Digital has come a long way, is true, but it is still not quite there yet, there are plenty of movies shot with digital that still has that videoish look, rare are those films shot digitally that can't tell the difference (like David Fincher movies and movies shot by Roger Deakins) I think both formats can co-exist just fine.

good point. i like a good 3D movie from time to time also. If Star Wars is released in 3D though it will be converted because digital makes it so much easier.

they both have thier place in history thats for sure. i think the best use of digital was in Avatar.

Having worked a bit on both, this is a large question, larger than the average person might think. Film is in my opinion still the superior method of shooting. Digital has made advancements no doubt, but in certain environments shooting on film is still the better choice. The trailer to the film reveals one of those situations. The scene in the woods with Kylo and the snow. Film can reveal detail in both shadow and light with thirteen stops of difference in between. This means that at its brightest point and at its darkest point there are 13 stops in between. Digital cannot do that. It might have improved, but not that much.

You will find a large number of films that shoot outside especially in the woods are shot on film. Film works better in this environment.

I like digital don't get me wrong, it is a godsend, especially for lower budget films or films in which there is an extensive amount of cgi. With CGI and film you have to sort of add grain in post to get the cgi image to look like the film stuff behind it.

There is also the reality that the OT was shot on film. Because of this shooting the sequel trilogy on digital would create too much of a different look between the OT and the ST. For the prequels I can justify that difference because the world did change between the prequels and the OT. I also think that shooting digital was the #1 mistake Lucas made. The film simply did not look like a Star Wars film and the largest reason was because of the medium it was shot on.

Keep in mind Lucas made the choice partially based on the extensive amount of CGI done in the PT, not as much as some people think, but as I recall there is only one or two shots in all the Phantom Menace that did not have CGI in them. Not one or two Scenes, one or two shots.

I personally like the look of actual film, but as long as it is in HD I will be happy.

The Phantom Menace looked really good for the most part and I imagine that has a lot to do with the majority of it being shot on film. It seems to me it just has a more warm natural look to it.

I agree with those in favor of using film. I think this movie being shot with the use of film and the use more live props will give us more of the feeling of actually being there in the galaxy far far away that we all love

It's going to be more interesting to see what the following episodes will be shot in.

It's very possible that TFA will be the only ST film shot in film.

you might be right about that...by the time Ep. 8 starts filming they might be using RED or Alexa. but i hope the continue to use IMAX cameras for the large shots. Guardians of the Galaxy used Alexa so it wouldn't be surprising.

I thought Guardians used Alexa, but wasn't sure.

I suppose it's really up to Rian, who I don't think is a 35mm guy, and as much as I would like continuity in look, I also want the directors to use the format they prefer.

Rian Johnson shot Looper and the Breaking Bad episodes on 35mm, I think he would be using film aswell for ep VIII. Gareth Edwards on the other hand might use digital for the spin-off movie.

Well I see it as a medium choice that suggests that they want things to FEEL like the OT. It's a choice that effects many nuances of the look and process of filming.

The movies being shot on RED cameras would be great since they are high quality.

For the action sequences use Imax cameras
