One, I have no problems with the plot for "The Phantom Menace". I thought it did a good job in setting up the trilogy, along with the downfalls of the main characters, the Republic and the Jedi. And I just cannot see Frank Darabont writing this movie, unless it was solely an action piece or a horror film.

He adapted/wrote a lot of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.. both had pretty good storytelling for the screen imo. There's way more to Frank than zombies..

Darabont would have been the perfect replacement for Kasdan for polishing the script.

I love the movie to this day but the script had some issues.

So he waited from 93 to 96 for george to finish the script.

Yes, I know. I'm a fan of "Mob City". Let me put it this way. I didn't miss Frank Darabont or any other director who didn't direct "The Phantom Menace". I realize that most of you hate it or are dismissive of it. But from the moment I first saw the film, I was a fan. It wasn't perfect. But I was a fan. And I still am. So . . . this news that Lucas had wanted Darabont to direct "The Phantom Menace" doesn't really mean anything to me.
