After getting my feelings hurt by Star Wars so many times. I've come up with sure-fire way to not be dissapointed by Ep. 7. This method has worked for me in countless comic book adaptions and also the new Star Trek. I wish I had known about this before Ep. I was released.

What you do is expect, deep down in your heart, that the movie will be terrible. So then, when its terrible, you are not shocked and dissapointed. Also in the event that the movie is mediocre, you feel pleasantly surprised. And if the movie is really good....Oh Boy! Words won't be able to describe your joy! (I have yet to experience this variant).

If you don't want to be sad next year, use my method. You can practice it on Avengers in the spring. Myself, I'm fully expecting Ep. 7 to be exteamly terrible!;)

I don’t know. I just try to go in without expectations. To let he filmmakers tell their story and judge it on its own merits, not requirements I set out for it ahead of time. This way there is no disappointment, but you don’t have to cynically doubt quality until release day. More fun that way.

If you can go into Ep. 7 with no expectations, then you truely are a Jedi. Perhaps I must unlearn what I have learned.

I myself have just learned to separate the trilogies out in my head.

I love the OT of course, but I also really like the PT. How? Because in my mind, I see them as two distinct things which could never be the same, and have many great things in each their own way. The OT is better in my mind, but I don't let that prohibit me from enjoying the prequels.

I'll basically go into the sequels with little expectations. It'll be a new era, both in film-making and in the movie timeline itself. As long as I'm not always comparing it to or expecting anything like the OT, I shouldn't be *too* disappointed.

What I did for the prequels was to read the novel first, that way I try to visualize what the words are describing and then when I see the movie it blows my expectations away. It gives you time to take in what is going on. The only downfall to this is you will know what happens before you see it on screen, which I don't mind.

Too bad with the prequels, the novels are better.

Exactly! Starwars is Starwars to me, whether it be OT or PT, I dont let much get in the way of enjoying them. Of course I enjoy the OT more, but thats because I grew up in that era, the PT is enjoyable as well, and maybe thats because I see how much my children love it, as that is their era. And this ST will hopefully bring about a great mesh of both, for the newest generation and the old. But I agree, I'm not expecting this to be the OT, nothing could capture that feeling as an adult that I had going to see it as a kid in the theater, but I do expect to enjoy it, as it is, as more Starwars! So to me, you dont have to expect it to be terrible, just not as super dooper awesome as the OT was as an 8 year old at the local cinema.

I did the same, and and it really does help understand the story alot better, giving you the ability to just soak in the movies for what they are, visual adaptations of a fictional story. Besides my mind produces way better graphics than the movies ever could, lol.

Man! You guys are all so positive! A lot of great viewpoints on how to look forward to the ST. Reading the books first is a very interesting idea. I don't think I could bring myself to do it. (even though I check out this spoiler-ridden website all the time. IRONY!)

I must admit I'm getting that spark of excitment I remember feeling when I saw screens of the SE or Ep. 1. Its really hard not to get my hopes up too high.

That's the power of Star Wars. It can make a grown man feel like a little kid, without even watching it!

Didn't work. Went in expecting sh1t. 2 hours later, walked out feeling even more shittier - which could've filled a cesspit.
Sometimes reverse psychology doesn't work. Didn't work for Rogue One either.

I may not even bother seeing TLJ. I probably will when/if I catch the hype bug, but I'm in no rush to see it on the first day like I normally would have done in the past. The last two films have been extremely disappointing and its painful to see Star Wars turning into something very different than it once was. TFA was even more worse than the awful AOTC, which is a pretty unbelievable thing to have achieved.

I really don't care who Rey's parents are. Honestly, I don't. I really don't care if Luke is a last Jedi or not. Who is Snoke? Again, I don't care, they could have explained that in TFA, but they didn't. They didn't even bother telling us where he's from, or what his plans are or what he ultimately wants. How can he be the new "Bad guy" when we don't know anything about him? These are not things to base an entire Star Wars film on, they are at best just backstory elements or minor details, but they're being marketed as the overall basis of a story. I don't want to be paying £20 a time to basically see who a characters parents are or be told who the tall grey scarred bloke really is. Who cares? How has Star Wars been allowed to evolve into a bad daytime soap opera?

It's extremely depressing to be an OT Star Wars fan in 2017, its like living in the weird fictional future world of "Demolition Man" film as the character John Spartan, in a world filled with politically correct brainwashed morons and liberals, who get their fun from listening to Taco Bell jingles and who are deeply offended or outraged by anyone having a different opinion about anything that differs from their own little narrow politically-correct safe and secure perception of life.

    F*ck 2017!

I went into TFA thinking it will not be as good as the OT, that is a given, nothing beats ot. However I was hopeful it would be better than TPM. that is a pretty low bar, for me at least. I actually liked it, not as much as OT, but 4th favorite.

I think if you go in thinking it will be absolute crap, it may be a self fulfilling prophecy.

"I don't care" is just a generic critic based on your personal taste, which don't provide any kind of proof about TFA's quality. By this way, I can answer you:

    1) I care about Rey's parentage, because both Ridley as the actress and Kasdan/Abrams as the writers, succeded to paint a character that I found very sympathetic, and that I consider part of the SW canon as well as the older ones.

    2) I care about Snoke and Luke for the same reason: I don't know who Snoke is, I don't know why Luke was looking for the First Temple, and this made me hyped about the evolution of the entire storyline. You call this "soap opera", but it's the exact way seriality works. You have to hide details and prepare the final twist, but simply you can't do it in just one movie: The Phantom Menace tried to make everything clear in the first half. The result? A movie with no tension, no atmosphere, no charisma. I wonder how can you find AOTC better than TFA. I'm not going to discuss your personal knowledge of writing, but the fact itself is significant enough to make your own critics appear for what they really are: emotionally compromised, just like the most of negative critics to TFA so far.

    3) "a world filled with politically correct brainwashed morons and liberals, who get their fun from listening to Taco Bell jingles and who are deeply offended or outraged by anyone having a different opinion about anything that differs from their own little narrow politically-correct safe and secure perception of life"... C'mon! I think life in 2017 is not that bad!

As a Star Wars fan I am trilled to learn about the world I love, anyway possible.

"I really don't care who Rey's parents are. Honestly, I don't. I really don't care if Luke is a last Jedi or not. Who is Snoke? Again, I don't care, they could have explained that in TFA, but they didn't. They didn't even bother telling us where he's from, or what his plans are or what he ultimately wants. These are not things to base an entire Star Wars film on, they are at best just backstory elements or minor details, but they're being marketed as the overall basis of a story..."

Let's talk Snoke first, you're an OT fan yeah? Where is Vader from and what does he ultimately want? Is that explained in ANH or for that matter is Palps origin/motive? Then why should Snoke be explained in TFA?

If Rey is the new main charecter, as Luke was before her, how can you say you don't care who her folks are? That is the single most epic moment of Star Wars, "I AM YOUR FATHER." And Star Wars has from the start been a story of family.

Star Wars is also the story of the Force, otherwise we're just watching Firefly. So how can you say you don't care about those that guarded the peace of the galaxy for a thousand generations, coming to their LAST member?

I don't think I can recall any marketing that focuses on WHO is Snoke, WHO is Rey, those are more questions that the fans are asking. So if you don't care about those questions...

Well Obi Wan did give a pretty in depth story in ANH about who Vader is. He was the guy who killed Luke's father. Way more info than we got with Snoke. Also Snoke is a stupid name...Darth Vader is an awesome name.

Snoke is the guy who turned Ben. So Leia gives us similar info. Gosh those movies do have some parallels.
