There was plenty of that back then. I remember. The opinions just weren't delivered as fast as they are today.

tbh I think at the time the majority of core Star Wars fans were probably still kids & teenagers so being critical was not really a factor.

I remember being an 11 year old seeing it at the cinema thinking it was the best film ever :) until a month later when I saw Superman III and thinking that was the best film ever

I realize that it is the "in thing" to believe this, but there were plenty of adult Star Wars fans back then. A large number of them. In fact, my own parents were responsible for introducing me to the 1977 movie, because they had seen it first.

It's not an "in thing" as far as I'm concerned, it's "a memory". I was an 11 year old when Return of the Jedi came out.

Yes of course the films were very popular with adults at the time but I'm referring to core fandom which was much more centred on kids and teenagers in the early 80s, they were the main ones consuming and creating demand for the merchandise, toys, comics etc.

Why do you assume that the saga's "core fandom" were children when the 1977 movie came out? There were just as many adult fans of the saga between 1977-1983 as there were children. I remember.

The fans would hate the Ewoks and there would be a few other issues, but your assumed comparison to TLJ isn’t valid as ROTJ (despite some admitted flaws) is a much better film than the half baked The Last Jedi.

My posting of this was not to compare TLJ with ROTJ (the person who drew it may have?)

What I find interesting and funny is the changes to how society engages with media nowadays. In the 80s my echo chamber was friends, family and colleagues now it's global but more concentrated in fandom so a whole different dynamic. Also the broad scope of fandom as changed being more multi generational each growing up with different eras.

To be fair, over time these have all been criticisms levied against this movie.

Still, I think this encapsulates an unfortunate and vocal minority in the current Star Wars community pretty well, though.

If ROTJ was released in 2018, it wouldn't be the same movie than the one we know with this title...

I hoped it remained the same.

I firmly believe the negative effect would end up in more violence and its great ROTJ was released in 1983.

Not necessarily for ROTJ, but imagine if the prequels were released first and then ANH came out years later after all the hype. Killing Obi-Wan off 2/3rds through the movie would result in so much backlash. Especially considering all he taught Luke was that the force is real and how to defend lasers from a flying ball.

Why is it a crime to be critical of certain STAR WARS films and it's not a crime to be critical of others? I sometimes get the feeling that people expect opinions on all films - regardless of whether they are well liked or not - to be unanimous.

I assume if RotJ was released in 2018 then that means its still only the third Star Wars movie ever. If thats the case than a lot of the complaints that existed for TLJ wouldn't exist because the franchise would still be being built. RotJ was the third movie, Lucas was still figuring things out with the force and the Star Wars universe as a whole. TLJ is the ninth movie, where the foundations of the entire franchise and universe have been established for years. The only complaints in the original post that I think would be present if RotJ came out now would be the Death Star and Ewoks, both of which are complaints people have anyway.
