Anyone spend time on the IMDb boards before they decided, against huge outcry of their dedicated board users, to close them down in February? I was a huge fan of IMDb and spent many years there posting on various movie and TV boards. But there was a silver lining for me, as it was IMDb's closing the boards that sent me here to the Cantina!

It's a shame, but I wasn't very involved in it.

I was a member for 9 years and I miss it. Sure there were a lot of idiots and trolls but there was a lot of great conversation going on as well. And the riff-raff mainly gravitated towards the boards of new films/shows (or spilled over into other films in a franchise with a new film like Star Wars did), but the forums for the lesser known or older films were usually just fans talking film. Obviously for the larger franchises I enjoy (Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, etc) there are dedicated forums I can go to like this one, but not for the smaller films/franchises I used to enjoy connecting with other fans of.

@NunbNuts Totally agree! Before they shut them down I was able to save many of the longer threads that were chock full of great info and opinions

They didn't want to spend the money to maintain/moderate them anymore.

I think they said that due to the rise of social media, the IMdB boards were becoming more redunadnt and populated with less actual movie fans and more, well, idiot trolls.

Like @NunbNuts said, the smaller film conversations were great, but the rest were just filled with boring trolls trying to bring movies down because they were popular or were competing with their 'favourites' (usually superhero fodder)

Still, it's a shame they're gone as some real good conversation and opinions could be had there

That was what they were saying at first, but they later admitted the financial angle. And being owned by Amazon (who I work for) it's most likely the sole reason. Amazon is "cheap" as Astromech put it. They openly admit it because that's how they keep prices down. They wouldn't have cared about trolls or fans if it was lucrative enough.
