Lucasfilm is getting ready for its first theatrical release in two-and-a-half years with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night.

In attendance were director James Mangold and the main cast, led by Harrison Ford himself, but also Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, along with her husband and producer on the film, Frank Marshall, as well as Disney CEO Bob Iger. But before the screening of the film began, film festival head Theirry Fremaux surprised Ford by awarding him an honorary Palme d'Or. That got a very emotional response from Ford, who was so choked up he could barely speak when accepting it. He ended by simply saying “I’m honored but I got a movie you gotta see”. Check out the full video below:

The first-ever public screening of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the audience (one of the toughest to show a film to in the world) stood up for a five-minute ovation which, according to Deadline, once again left Ford very emotional, as well as director James Mangold. When given a mic to speak, Mangold said the following:

To say that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has been a passion project for Ford for many years would be an understatement. It's been clear from the first time he started talking about it, that this was the film he wanted to say goodbye to his iconic characters with -- even after reprising the roles of Han Solo in The Force Awakens and Deckard in Blade Runner 2049, Indiana Jones was always the one that holds the most special place in his heart. We still have another month before we get to see the movie, but the first few reviews are already out there for those curious. More and more will surely be added over the next few days/weeks as press screenings around the world begin.

Disney also revealed a new promo for the film ahead of the Cannes premiere:

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will hit theaters worldwide on June 30. Check out some pictures from the event here:

Unfortunately, the critics appear not to like Dial of Destiny all that much :(

It currently rates well below Kingdom of the Crystal Skull... I hope that is just a weird, small sample bias issue. I need Indy 5 to be good...

Rumors about the plot and the use of time travel are kind of troubling to some.....

I want to be optimistic here but I'm feeling some apprehension concerning these reviews as well but we've all been down reviews before release road before right. This isn't just any franchise. It's Indiana Jones and I have no choice but to give it a chance. Here's to wishful thinking. : l

Perhaps this, if Indy 5 really isn't that good, is why LFL announced they would shelve ideas for future TV & film installments to focus instead on Star Wars. If they know and realize that they have a dud on their hands, that's the nail in the coffin for the beloved franchise.

Or, Whills willing, the audience might end up loving it way beyond expectations, prompting another re-think down the line :)

But yes, the time travel thing is definitely worrying. I would be ok with it used as a simple cheat to "reset" Indy back to the pulpy 20s and 30s, which is what I personally am most interested in with this franchises, but it is a really slippery slope, that stuff.

When I was just a child, I was excited to see James Bond as Indy's dad. As an adult I read that Indy was created because George Lucas could not secure the rights to James Bond... for me, Kingdom of Crystal Skull had a bit too much CGI which took me out of the film, other than that I rather enjoyed it. My expectations are very low for the new film, but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless; simply because, its part of my childhood.

I've been researching pulp comic books, so as @Angelman said:
Time travel is an over used film trope, but it was used rather well in Avengers: Endgame. Hopefully its used well here... I have no interest at all for Fast and the Furious X this weekend, but I'm looking forward to Indy.... :D

The thing about this whole de-aging tech is that it's already noticeable and will be even more noticeable in a short period of time, Rogue One and Mando Luke i.e.. IMHO the lack of sophistication/perfection serves more so to distract the viewer from the story and visual believability rather than further immerse the viewer into that world. I don't agree with the use of the tech at it's present stage of development. It tips the scale more towards disbelief and frustration rather than awe and satisfaction.

FWIW the industry buzz on Indy is pretty good. It's why Disney/Lucasfilm released it early for the festival. I do think we are reaching the point where top critics are starting to turn on nostalgia IP. Fans may like it, but critics may not.
