JJ on Howard Stern Today

1. He gave a perfect political answer when asked why Luke Skywalker has been left out of the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" trailers.


Telling Howard that it drives him "nuts" when trailers give away the entire movie, Abrams responded simply: "Here's the thing. I really want to make sure we're not ruining the movie for people." So, keep speculating, I guess.

So how would exactly briefly showing Luke in a trailer ruin the movie for people?
There were rumors of him having gone darkside but we all know how extremely unlikely this would be.
There were rumors of him being part cyborg but this wouldn't make for a shocking reveal imo.
Both of these seem to have been completely debunked by the leaked photo of Luke in white robes.
What other options are there?
To be honest the only option that comes to mind is that Luke is not only missing but presumed dead through most of the movie.
This could even be reinforced through Maz's visions, maybe that's what upsets Rey, she finds out she is Luke's daughter but the visions seem to also indicate that he is dead.
Maybe that's the main point of Maz's visions, showing Luke briefly in a couple of scenes and strongly alluding that he died, trying to deceive the audience into thinking he is truly dead.
And then of course the shocking reveal would come at some point during act 3 when we finally see him alive.
What do you guys think?

Edit: On further thought I think my post doesn't make any sense lol.

 

IMHO, Luke will be in two scenes....

The flashback scene to TEN years before TFA in which you see LUKE's hand on R2.

and the FINAL scene which is according to MSW is the scene where REY hands Luke the family saber and they walk to the edge of a cliff together as the sun goes down on Skellig.... or whatever the planet is called.

I did hear that when REY and CHEWIE land the Falcon on Skellig that Luke's old X-Wing is covered up like you would cover your car while its not in use.... but that is a RUMOR

 

I definitely missed the boat on that rumor. I never understood where people were getting this Bespin stuff from.

 

Interesting that JJ had constant contact with Pablo Hidalgo to fill in the details.

He had a contact at LucasFilm whom he could call any time he had a question about the "Star Wars" mythology.

"There's a guy named Pablo Hidalgo who works at LucasFilm who is the keeper of all arcane details of 'Star Wars.' So sometimes, three times a day, other times once a week or whatever, I would send him an email asking him questions about just this kind of thing. ...by the way, there's a whole extended universe that he also needed to reference, and things that frankly would be impossible to read all of and watch all of."

 

This website was the original site to make the rumor that the flashback sequence of the movie would involve Bespin. Then the steps of the carbon-freezing chamber appeared on the San Diego Comic Con poster:

 

I know it was. I never followed the thought-process. Maybe there's some inside information, but from my point of view it came out of left field. But whatever, speculation is fun and we will know soon enough.

 

I'll assume that was just for looks....

 

Interesting...MOST interesting .

 

That last clip where JJ is talking about Rey not knowing Luke ever existed...I don't know about you but it sure sounds like they're not related and if they are it would make the Universe so small and feel shoehorned in. Everyday we get closer it feels more and more like shes not related to anybody.

 

I think it's starting to look more likely that Kylo would be a big candidate to be Luke's son or Leia's son .

 

That I would find most interesting if our heroes had no relation. The OT 3 training a new 3 to take out Solo/walker gone rogue.

 

I think that having absolutely no relation and passing the torch is cliched .

 

if Kylo is relation that satisfies KK about the Skywalker lineage. Maybe every film a new Solowalker appears and we see how different they are from each other. Light. Dark, Grey. But If I was a betting man we'd prolly end up with Rey is related or Kylo is and is redeemed or both. Everyone pitched them as related from the jump which felt kinda boring since everyone thinks its going that way.

Interesting, so luke on the poster would be giving too much away? Is Hamill's reveal in the white/beige robes supposed to be "THE" moment for luke? I always felt if the flashbacks happen, they could be Hamill but his face is never shown?

maybe i'm being biased, but to me that sounds like EXTREMELY limited "older luke" while giving more creedence to more "young luke" in flashbacks

 

Having no memory of someone will do that. Doesn't mean she isn't related. I personally have no idea if she is or not but it is driving me nuts to find out.
