UPDATE: John Boyega has since shared on social media that there are no news so far about a potential return for him. While this doesn't contradict the original story, we believe it's something worth keeping in mind while reading it. You can find the original article below.

Could more Star Wars be on the cards for John Boyega? He seems to be open to the idea of returning as Finn, according to a recent interview the actor did as part of the promotional tour for his upcoming Netflix film They Cloned Tyrone. This is the latest statement from the actor after going back and forth on his feelings towards Disney and how they treated his character in the sequel trilogy (see below for a quick history lesson on that).

Talking to Tech Radar shortly before the recent SAG-AFTRA strike, Boyega has indicated that he doesn't consider his earlier criticisms as a refusal to work with Disney and Lucasfilm again:

He added that if a project seems interesting to him, then that he would not turn it down:

John Boyega has gone back and forth about whether or not he is open to more Star Wars. Initially, he stated that he was good if the sequel trilogy was his only contribution to the franchise, and he did not want the studio to shove his character onto Disney Plus. A few months later, he turned around and stated that he would be open to returning if either J. J. Abrams or Kathleen Kennedy were involved in a future project - but in that same year, he also vocalized criticisms of Disney's handling of the franchise and specifically his character.

He would also renege on his Disney Plus comment, stating that he would be open to revisiting the cut sequel trilogy narrative concept of a Stormtrooper rebellion on Disney Plus - but soon after, he said that he would be completely fine with never returning to Star Wars and just supporting all future projects, including projects with his sequel trilogy co-stars, as a fan. Then in March 2023 he softened up when he said that he's now more comfortable with how JJ Abrams tried to tie up Finn's arc.

Those comments later followed by rumors that he may be pursuing additional work in the realm of Star Wars. Shortly after the announcement of the New Jedi Order project that will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey Skywalker, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy alluded to the possibility that other characters from the sequel trilogy would be joining her. Soon enough, it was mentioned on The Hot Mic podcast that Boyega reportedly had talks with Lucasfilm about the future of the franchise and his potential role in it, with it looking likely that he would join Ridley in the new adventure.

As it currently stands, nothing is set in stone, and unless he already signed a contract in secret, John Boyega cannot sign on for a film until the SAG-AFTRA strike ends. Lucasfilm currently have three release dates reserved - May 22, 2026, December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027 - and the New Jedi Order project is likely one of the 2026 dates. For now, though, it's nice to know that Boyega feels comfortable with a return to the franchise.
