Donald Glover has explained why he wants to make a Lando movie, which he is presently co-writing a screenplay for with his brother Stephen.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter in time for the release of his Amazon Prime Video television series adapting Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Glover said the following when asked about whether or not writing a Lando film was something that he saw as easy, when discussing the power to turn down projects:

From there, he stated that he wanted to pursue the project because he felt that it had the potential to be great and that he wanted to leave the mark, going on about creative control on the project:

The upcoming Lando film (previously set to be a Disney Plus limited series) is one of several spin-offs said to be in development on the feature film side of things for Lucasfilm. Other candidates include The Mandalorian & Grogu, spinning off of three seasons of the hit streaming series, which is set to be the first Star Wars movie release since Lucasfilm prioritized live-action development for streaming.

Also on the docket: a film set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker that will see the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker, a film serving as the culmination of the various shows tied to The Mandalorian, and a film that will explore the origins of the Jedi, none of which have been added to Disney's calendar of release as of yet.

The current status of Lando is unknown, though we suspect it hasn't moved beyond the writing phase yet. No further details are known.

I must admit, I'm pretty hyped for Glover's Lando project; it's always interesting when SW shifts perspective and gives us stories from a different point of view (no pun intended), and while Lando has been in plenty of things before, we've never seen a movie or show specifically about Lando, and that should be refreshing and cool.

I'm not at all sure what a Lando show could be about, though:
    • Smuggling? Yeah, possibly.
    • High society shenanigans? Definitely.
    • Another heist movie? Could be.
    • Wolf of Wall Street but in space? That'd be weird, but sure!
    • The rise of the proto-Rebellion? Nah.
Whatever it turns out to be, I hope Ehrenreich & Suotamo makes an appearance, 'cause I need more of that sweet chemestry!

There's lots of things you can do with Lando. Scams, capers, heists, hoaxes. "Lando conned somebody out of it."

    - Rigged pod races, Rancor fights, holo-chess matches.
    - Counterfeit parts for Imp starships.
    - Selling cut and shut junkers he claims to be OG Falcon to shady pirates.
    - Real estate scams (get two useless, uninhabitable, unmineable planets for the price of one!)

Lando is the kind of guy I could see putting on an ambitious sounding theatre show. And hire a few dozen holographic dancing girls to distract the audience for the opening act while he makes a break for it with all the investor's money on opening. "Springtime For Palpatine" (@bferr1972 I'm sure you could work with that :D)

But along the way we'll see that deep down he has a heart of gold. Of course.

Don't involve the rebellion too much. Just enough to acknowledge it and where Lando will wind up.

Yes, of course there are lots of things he can get involved with, but my question is -- assuming this won't just be a stream of story-beat vignettes showing Lando engaged in various mischief -- what will the movie actually be here? The most likely, perhaps, we'll get a 3-act action adventure, with a heist/long-con plot.

Maybe. But like the new Rey film's form can follow its own function (whatever thay may turn out to be) and doesn't need to feel like another "Episode" in the saga , where the stakes involve existential threat to the freedom of the galaxy itself. A Lando movie can be looser and more characterised by the appeal of the character itself. Rather than just plugging the character in to a familiar adventure/action story. Somewhere closer to what Lord & Miller perhaps had in mind (I imagine) than Solo, which was a personal tribute by Kasdan to the Han mythology.

Until I hear otherwise, it's not worth getting jazzed about.

Yeah, even setting aside the Lucasfilm track record for a moment, Glover has had projects fall through. For all the bluster, I don't really buy that Lucasfilm is interested in creators putting their spin on things. I really can't blame them, a portion of the fanbase is very against change. That's a struggle for any large IP.
