So what if the reason we don't see Luke Skywalker in either the poster or the trailer is because he's already dead by the time of The Force Awakens? I know we see a cloaked figure with RD-D2 who we're led to believe is Luke but we never see his face. That clip could easily be a misdirect. He'll appear as a 'force ghost' when his time comes to council his daughter... Rey who was orphaned when her father died at the battle of Jakku and her mother shortly after having just delivered twins Rey and Kylo?

So I'm going to present a theory about Luke this is just pure speculation on my part ...

What if when The Force Awakens starts Luke is ........ Already dead ! Bare with me hear me out !

My theory is Luke died protecting Rey from the Knights of Ren . The search for Luke will realy be Reys search for her true self .

Rey refuses to let the force in , this prevents force ghost Luke from revealing himself to his daughter through the force all of her life .

Only after Reys journey in TFA were she finaly accepts the force , can she reunite with Luke on Skelig !

Imagine the reunion as Force Ghost Luke explains his sacrifice to his daughter .

I doubt Luke is dead he has just exiled himself after failing to defeat the Knights of Ren.

    No.
To quote Forrest Gump- "That's all I have to say about that."

I don't think so because there is a sound bite from the Kylo Ren mask toy which says 'Soon we will destroy the resistance, ...and the last Jedi.'

The last Jedi is Luke Skywalker.

I don't think he's in exile. I believe his base is the Skellig planet, but he doesn't spend all his time hiding there. he's probably like the Batman of the gffa, living in secret with no friends so nobody gets hurt while traveling the galaxy watching over force sensitives and doing good (Might be why he's on Jakku, the robot hand shot) but unlike the old Jedi, staying out of wars and galactic level affairs.

...Until Leia decides the Resistance needs him that is and sets the lightsaber quest in motion via Poe ;)

Edit: It should be noted that everyone asking where is Luke is exactly what JJ and Disney wants. This is the biggest marketing strategy for the film getting everyone asking and wondering 'Where is Luke?'
It worked a treat, look at the demand for tickets and everyone on social media talking about his absence. Even if he was in the film a lot more this strategy would make sense, even if it was extremely cruel

We can't see Luke's face, a masked vader looking villian with an altered voice and the purposely leaked concept art of Luke as the cyborg villian (even though he was a placeholder.) Notice how that cyborg also had an eposed metal hand like Luke does, the reason Luke isn't wearing the glove is to trick people more. it's all part of the plan to get people to be desperate to know what happened to him

As he's in EPVIII is makes no sense to have him dead already. If you notice the poster there's no Andy Serkis or Max Von Sydow either. No Threepio in the trailer, a brief shot of R2 and Chewie, even Poe only gets a second or 3. More being made of Luke's absence than necessary. He's alive in the film, that should be enough to be going on with. It's nice to have an air of mystery. When Han tells Finn and Rey that all the stories were true about the Jedi that obviously gives Rey the spark to try and find Luke.

I don't think Abrams, as personal as he gets with this project, would be able to have killed Luke Skywalker before the movie. We've seen a behind the scenes photo in which we see how the scene of the robotic hand over r2 is shot, and it was the hand of Mark Hamill.

    BUT:

What I do believe, is that the photo of Luke that was leaked, was a real misdirection. Also the over-explained contractual beard.

All that mistery surrounding the character leads to an old man dressed exactly like Obi Wan Kenobi? No, I don't buy it. That was the real misdirection by Abrams himself. I think we will be surprised when we finally see Luke, and I think he's going to be key for the rest of the trilogy (or at least for VIII).

After ROTJ everything went south for the heroes. Luke set up Jedi Order and Han and Leia had a son - Kylo. Knights of Ren destroy Jedi, abduct Kylo (being a powerful Skywalker and all). Rey is Luke's daughter or at the very least, his no.1 student. He takes her to Jakku for her safety and goes into exile 'until the time is right'.

I'm guessing Han/Leia etc thought Kylo was killed (hence why they seperated) and later on he unmasks himself - that's the big shock. Not for us the audience per se, but in seeing how Han/Leia react to the news.

Luke will be to VIII what Yoda was to V. Then he'll die in IX and Rey will have to go it alone.

    Maybe.

My theory ( which nobody likes :D ) is that Finn is Luke's apprentice and his mission is to bring the awakening ( Rey ) to him.

My long standing theory is that many many believe Luke is dead, some believe he wasn't even real and only a few know he's still alive.

I feel like when Han delivers the "It's true. All of it." line, and they're looking at the holographic star map, he'll be telling them about Luke, Vader... how they're connected. He may even have just finally found out where Luke has been all these years.

He may be thought to be dead at the beginning of the movie. Kinda like Obi Wan in IV. A myth, a memory to most. People may even SAY he's dead at the start of the movie.

Luls, Luke isn't dead. JJ/The Mouse would never do a new trilogy that is literally an homage to the original fans and start out by saying 'haha your main hero is DEAD DEAD DEAD! Muhahahaha".

He might bite the dust sooner than later, but not when this one starts...not happening.
