If you were wondering when the Star Wars comic books were going to have Luke stumble onto some Jedi artifacts, today is your day.

    SW#9 02.png

Luke just had his lightsaber snatched away last issue and he's on a chase to get it back. On Nar Shadda, which is the Coruscant of the criminal world, Luke pursues the thief. Their chase leads them to a mid-air entanglement that gives the name Skywalker new literality. The two plummet to the deepest reaches of the city and we meet a new underworld friend, Grakkus the Hutt. Not only does Grakkus appear to be three-times the size of Jabba (my Hutt barometer), he is flanked by some Magna Guards and wears a necklace of Jedi lightsabers. Some Hutts are into money, spice, and slave girls. This Hutt is into Jedi artifacts.

    SW#9 03.png

After Luke gets "escorted" to Grakkus' abode, we realize this Hutt has a serious collection of Jedi artifacts. Almost as serious as the Emperor's collection of Sith artifacts aboard his private ship. Grakkus has one that is the most unique: a Jedi Holocron that only someone with knowledge of the Force can open. Luke may talk like a badass when he's flinging a lightsaber around, but when pressed to open the Holocron with a blaster to his head, he gently reminds them he's no Jedi. His Midi-chlorians must have kicked in, because the Holocron opens for Luke. I'll let you all read what it says, because it's a pretty cool moment.

Grakkus has all the proof he needs that Luke is the last Jedi. If you're a Hutt, what do you do with the last Jedi? Have him sent to someone called the Gamemaster and prepare to watch the him fight for his life in the Arena. That's where we are left with Luke's story.

    SW#9 04.png

Oh yeah. I almost forgot! Han's still married and after three issues we still know next to nothing about her. We probably have about thirty-seconds added to where you last saw Sana, Han, and Leia. They are still arguing about Han's departure from their matrimonial union and Leia seems to be the only one who cares there are some TIE Fighter pilots that need to be blasted. Sana also didn't know Han's a Rebel and on the Empire's most wanted list, which is surprising and sloppy writing, since she seemed to know every other aspect of his life. The three of them all escape in Sana's ship and I have a feeling next issue they will punch the "exposition" drive and we'll finally find out what the hell the deal is with Sana Solo.

    SW#9 05.png

We get a nice little cameo by some familiar Rebel Alliance leaders at the end of the issue. I'll let you read about that one, as well.

This was a step-up from #8, but I'm still really let down by the artwork. The faces look washed out and cartoonish to me. It's not a deal breaker and I still think this series is worth keeping up on. Pick this issue up but I wouldn't run out and get it. It might even be worth waiting for the arc to finish. It's good, but certainly not great.

Nice summary of the issue. I actually love the artwork, but as with all art, nothings for everyone :).

Additionally, the EU fan in me couldn't help but geek out when one of the Holocrons talked about
The Hundred-Year Darkness. I'm sure some of the details may have changed, but we know that it led to the same thing, namely the creation of the Sith.

I liked Luke's part of the story: the chase and the Hutt collector. 'I am a Skywalker' and holocron were cool moments too. Plus,
    Chewbacca
    to the rescue!

It is time, I think, to end Sana's arc or at least clear up the air. It's time to move this part of the story forward.

I have to agree that art is slipping a bit: there were a several very cool panels (action was well-done), but they are relying on short-hand too much for my taste.

I was hoping for more exposition on Sana too, but alas, we'll have to wait another issue. Luke "finding" all of the relics was pretty cool, but now I can't get this silly image of Luke somehow wielding four lightsabers, cackling as he goes around destroying Sith or Sith influenced beings (fortunately it's just my crazy delusion :)). Personally, I like the new art style. It adds a lighter feel to the comic that I appreciate, but that's honestly just me. Either way, I hope these new artifacts (and maybe even the ones in the Lando series) pay off in the long run.

A lot of exciting stuff going on in this issue. I like the artwork especially the opening city canyon panel and the artifact room reveal. This issue had a real Star Wars movie action packed adventure feel to it.

    And
considering where Luke is at on his Jedi path the lightsaber crystal holo was a real eye opener

@Admiral Petty Hundred-Year Darkness....Yes! I need more Old Republic references to tide me over until the inevitable Netflix Series (here's hoping!). @Kyle great review as always. I actually enjoyed this issue more than the last of the Vader series. I'm actually enjoying the artwork as well. We are sacrificing some character detail for more action but that's okay with me. I also like that Immonen is coming up with original shots unstead of superimposing character poses from the films. And how come no one is talking about Spider-Hutt? :)

This issue really didn't do it for me. Luke and that dude surviving that fall unharmed, the Incredible Hutt, more nothing about Sana Solo, etc. Luke and the relics was cool, and the art was solid, but that's about it.
I did like the Shaak-Ti cameo. Just wondering how she recorded that before getting murdered by Anakin. Not saying it couldn't have happened, would just like to see how it transpired. So far, the only Jedi we know to have survived the first wave of Order 66 are Yoda, Obi-Wan, Kanan, and maybe Luminara (arrested and executed.) I'd like to see how she found out about order 66 and what she had to go through to survive long enough to get that message made.

The parallel between the storage room with Jedi relics in the present story and
the chamber with Sith relics on Palpatine's private yacht
in the Lando comics is interesting. I wonder whether there is a connection between them and TFA. It seems to me that someone in that movie (probably Kylo Ren) is highly interested in them.

PS: I actually do not mind the art work. However, the fact that Sana did not know that Han is working for the Rebel Alliance is odd.

So has proximity to some thing(s) aboard Palpatine's yacht turned the Imperial guards to zombies or had they been reanimated? I'm leaning towards corruption because it seemed to me like one of the cat brothers eyes glowed Sithlike like when he turned on his companion. But then again he's a cat-man with cat eyes so it could have been a reflection and they did join together again, so...confused I am.
    I wonder,
since Kylo Ren is allegedly collecting similar Sith artifacts, are they corrupting him to behave aggressively Sith-like while not being a fully formed Sith?

A thought to your spoiler post.
Holocrons are semi sentient in nature; they are autonomous and AI. The force embodies the holocron and allows it to adapt to the user. It's entirely possible that the holocron through it's AI or the force adapted logged what has happen to the jedi and the death of it's creator. In the what is now legends material some holocrons did have answers to how the creator of a specific holocron died. That's the only answer I can come up with.

    Nice review @Kyle.

    "What are you, insane?"
    "No, I'm a Skywalker"

For the first time ever, a reasoning for the last name in ANY media, and I really liked it :D As for the story, can we PLEASE learn more about Sana SOLO?! I liked Luke's first push into using the force, and I get the feeling that it was just instinct kicking in, just like when he deflected the laser bolts when he was wearing the helmet on the Millennium Falcon. I also loved seeing MagnaGuards and a mix of very old and PT era Jedi artifacts, and the EU reference to the creation of the Sith! Loved it! The washout look some people dislike is to me not even an issue, considering how the closeups are sharp and the drawing really works, especially for Leia, unlike the stylized and unfocused washout of her miniseries I enjoyed enough, for a while. Han is better captured in Shattered Empire however. Luke at this point must not have experienced the events of Heir to the Jedi, where he has to levitate, which seems much harder to tap into than unlocking the Holocrons, so I buy it :D Can't wait for more!
