Today, I want to try and look at the glass half-full in the Chewbacca series. In case you missed last weeks review, yours truly was not crazy about the idea of a series based around a character who has no form of speech other than growling and roaring. I am still scratching my head as to why Marvel would do it, but I think I see where they are going with it now, and I get it.

The artwork by Phil Noto is very unique and I love the vintage era it takes me back too. It's just a few shades darker than water color and it reminds me of 1970's Saturday morning cartoons. These books are very well laid out and nice to look at. It's a fresh look for Star Wars and I hope they bring Noto back for more SW series. His skills deserve a story with a little more...I think you get the backhand of what I'm trying to say.

    image.jpeg

Chewbacca has agreed to help a young girl free her enslaved father and the rest of her people that are buried deep beneath the surface mining beetle larvae. This specific beetle larvae is very effective in Imperial blaster power cells. I think I got that right.

    image.jpeg
The plan is simple. The girl gets recaptured with a tracking device. She maps out the mine and Chewbacca climbs down a vent to go "Wookie" on the captors and free the people. What could go wrong? A claustrophobic Wookie, that's what.

    image.jpeg
Yes, every mighty Wookie has their flaw, and Chewbacca is no exception. He does not care for tight spaces like vent shafts leading to underground mines. It is not without good reason, though. We get a glimpse of what Chewbacca's time in the bondage of slavery was like, and let's just say his sleeping quarters have a lot to do with his phobia. Makes that cell in the bowels of Jabba's Palace seem a lot smaller now, eh?

    image.jpeg

    image.jpeg
This Jaum character is not nice at all. He doesn't seem particularly menacing, more like a Scooby Doo villain.
    image.jpeg
Evil doers, surface and subterranean, beware. Chewbacca has a droid and he will take you on in a knife, gun, or lightsaber fight with it and probably win. Yes, I'm making fun of this issue now, so I should probably stop.
    image.jpeg
Chewbacca does manage to make it into the mine and get the captives close to escape. Then this happens.

What I do like is that we are seeing first hand the suffering and oppression of people on a small world that isn't small enough to be missed by those who would exploit it to the Empire. We often hear about it, but I feel like this series is trying to show us that through the eyes of Chewbacca, a survivor of it himself. An 'A' for effort, but I still feel like this is missing the mark. It's certainly a step-up, but you aren't missing anything.

Yeah, it was better or I just got used to the girl, I don't know. I always like seeing Chewie kicking ass. I love him, but I am pretty indifferent towards this comic. Such contrast to Kanan!

Still not great, but nice to see some backstory to Chewie's character.

@Kyle good review! But yeah, this was probably my least favorite issue out of all of the new Canon. I was completely bored while reading it (and while I won't rule out circumstances of when and where I was reading it, I feel like the comic should have been more engaging regardless). I hope the next issue's better, but honestly, I'm not really looking forward to getting it...

I like this better than the first issue (perhaps just by knowing moreso what to expect going in). The one thing that I really like about these so far is how we *are* getting a better idea of Chewbacca as a character. As great as Chewie is in the films, he's pretty one-note and I feel like we don't get much of an idea as to who he is.

Here we get these flashbacks to his capture and him driving his own narrative, which I think goes a long ways towards giving us a clearer view of him as a character.

As well (as was rightly pointed out above) the art is uniformly excellent in here.
    ...
The main narrative still isn't very interesting though, and -- while I think she has potential -- I don't really love Zarro yet, and there's not one else that I care about at all.
I do feel better about how this series is turning out now though, and am much more optimistic about what's coming next, as those I think can certainly still be salvaged.

I really do love the artwork by Phil Noto. His style looks so simple and clean at first glance, but when you look closer it's so layered. I'm trying to keep it as positive as I can but the story is really formulaic. The writer, Gerry Duggan, is doing the best he can with a titular character who has limited means of conveying any kind of nuance. I don't envy Duggan's job.

Precisely! I have no emotional attachment to any of these characters. We all know Chewbacca is going to be fine so it's hard to feel any real sense of danger. It's more like "How many people is Chewie gonna beat up in this panel?"

Lately poor Chewie seems rather upset by the representation of his character in this series. :D Chewbacca Awakens.jpg

Ah...Chewbacca...you are on the way to supplanting Leia as my least favorite series in the canon from Marvel. I love the character, but this story is a "take it or leave it" story so far. I'm glad it's only five issues, so if the other two are bad, at least it's not that big of a mark against Marvel. The artwork is pretty good - I'll give it that - but that's about all I've enjoyed about it so far. I also feel like Chewie's dialogue (as crazy as this sounds) could be a little more expressive and nuanced. It feels like he's just saying the same thing over and over. All that being said, I remain hopeful for the last three issues.

The one thing that did stand out to me in this issue was Chewie remembering his life as a slave. This makes me hopeful that we'll see a glimpse of Han rescuing Chewie and leaving the Empire in a future flashback. Seeing this for the first time canonically would be a plus and give this series some much needed redemption in the way of its significance. I doubt we'll see too much Han Solo pre-ANH given that the story group will probably want to reserve that story for the 2018 Solo Anthology film, but just anything related to that would give this series a little more merit. Sadly I don't think my hopes here will come to fruition and I suspect we will all let out a collective sigh of relief when we turn that last page of issue five. I hope I'm wrong. Or as Chewie would say (as he does in basically every panel where he has dialogue in this series), "Raaaahhh!"

@Kyle, great job as always. I liked this issue A LOT more than the first, and I was pretty okay with the first. It's nice seeing Chewbacca be more of a intelligent warrior and less of a "walking carpet" with some emotions, like he is in the movies. Seeing the flashback of him as a slave with the Trandoshans was a very nice touch, and showed a bit of his life after ROTS and helping Yoda escape before appearing in ANH. Of course, the Solo Anthology looks to be covering a lot more than what this comic will be able to show, but it's nice having these details. Out of all the miniseries, I feel like this is intended to be a 70's homage, to be a bit silly and zany, and is clearly below Lando, but tied with Leia for miniseries. It's honestly just nice to see and read, and in some cases, I think that's just enough.

The payoff for this comic is that it reminds us that not all Star Wars content is golden, and it tempers our expectations for future releases - much as Aftermath has for many. I'm okay with that, not everything can be amazing. Not everything in the old EU was.
