This arc is finally starting to ramp back up for me. If you haven't been following along, it's been a confusing and bloated last few issues of Darth Vader. This series started out great, but this arc is a bit more of a slow burn than the previous one. That's fine, but some of the writing started to feel redundant and the characters were chasing their tails (an act that is excruciating to the reader). I'm happy that Darth Vader is gaining steam.

We open with Doctor Aphra in a tourist destination called The Spire, a station at the edge of a cosmic storm. I love seeing these new, strange, and extraordinary locations in the Star Wars universe. She is pressing a source for information about Luke Skywalker. Apparently, the price on Luke's head is possibly higher than the one Jabba had on Han's. Doctor Aphra pays the fee with her newly acquired wealth and finds out he is on a planet called Vragos Vos, which makes me think we are headed for another series convergence. Luke is not there yet in the other series, but it could very well be later than we have seen so far.

Vader and Thanoth are hot on the trail of the arms dealer called the Dragon. It has brought them to the Spire as well. The back and forth between Vader and the investigator is becoming a little tired to me. Thanoth intrigued me, at first, but now I'm just waiting for Vader to get fed up with him and take a lightsaber to his monocle. Vader is still nervous and that becomes clear when they catch up with Ante, the same person who sold Doctor Aphra Luke's location.

Ante is quick to give her up, but Vader realizes Aphra has been playing him the whole time and resorts to some drastic measures to catch up with her while avoiding any chance for Thanoth to get a word in. Vader, as we expect, offers nothing more than a quick death to Aphra. She lets him know that she knows where Luke is, but Vader had to pay to play.

    image.jpeg

After Vader stages her elaborate escape, it turns out Thanoth had plans of his own on how to keep Aphra from escaping.

This arc seems to have a bit more direction now. I'm excited to read the follow-up issue. I wouldn't pick this over Shattered Empire if I were watching my pennies, but it's definitely worth a read at some point.

@Hard Case pointed out this is the second only canonical appearance of a Yoda species character. Good eye!

I don't think Aphra is playing him, I think she is doing exactly what he wanted. She casually greets him. But, Vader thinks she is no longer useful because Thanoth is too close.

I like how quick she is on her feet. But, 'you will answer for this' is not a good sign for her. And, of course, he isn't planning to give her a quick death by lightsaber like she asked. :D

Now, we will see if she is as good pilot as Han in the asteroid field. Also, we know that Luke is not currently on Vrogas Vas, but maybe the series are not synchronized - maybe he will be. In Star Wars 9 he opens the holocron and it says: "Recorded here are the teachings of Master Phin-Law Wo of the Jedi Temple on Vrogas Vas. Protect them at all costs." Maybe this will tie in with Vader Down.

I agree that this is a better issue than previous ones, but this is a third or fourth issue where Vader has to escape suspicion and I don't like that - in the first arc he showed so much initiative, here he plays by other people's notes. Hopefully, we will get the great tone of the first arc back. And, I would hate to lose Aphra. Aphra is cool. :)

Good catch by @Hard Case, I missed it. (Maybe Yoda took a vacation from Dagobah, lol.)

Outside of the films anyway. TPM did have a female Jedi Master of Yoda's species named Yaddle on the Jedi Council. Legends material had other characters as well, but this is the first time I've seen one in the new canon material.

Thank you! I knew this and completely spaced it. My 9-5 has been a 9-9 the last week. I appreciate the help.

Great review @Hard Case. I will agree in that things are really picking it up. I know some people will complain about what Vader is doing, not fighting outright and avoiding suspicion, but he is beginning to form into the Vader of TESB. Vader of ANH had no tact or sophistication, like Anakin, and as a result, he was simply brutal and physical. But Vader in TESB is like Anakin, especially in TCW, the tactical, reckless, physical and sophisticated leader, all put into one, now with the effect of the Dark Side. So, Vader here, working more carefully, means to me he's just learning to play his cards more carefully, as he didn't in ANH and it cost him much. As for Aphra in general, her character seems to have crossed Vader, but I still think she's doing what Vader asked, and is actually a step ahead of Tanoth.

Great post! Though I don't think Aphra crossed Vader. I think he's pissed at her because Thanoth almost caught up to her, which would lead the Emperor to proof that Vader has been operating behind the Emperor's back. Even with Aphra's loyalty, getting caught could be curtains for Vader.

I guess the reason I felt she crossed him is because she took a shortcut to getting Luke's identity and did it as a way to cover her own ass. I know they are working together, but I thought this was her way of getting a little leverage on him. Totally my perspective and I could be wrong. That's just where I was coming from, as a few others have pointed this out.

Mmm, I think Vader was just trying to cover his tracks (like moving the Mon Calimari to let the blaster bolt through and issue 10 too). The Luke info just made him double down on his bet.

Oh, and good pick up on 'yoda's species' @Hard Case - that's one of the biggest mysteries of the Star Wars universe for me.

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing.

In the Clone Wars series, there's a Jedi Master who gets killed that looks like his species might be an offshoot of Yoda's species. I can't remember his name, but he's brown-colored, little and has Yoda-like ears.

@Kyle, great review as usual. And I understand you on the being overworked front.

@Kyle actually did the review. But I agree with you on all counts. :)

His name was Even Piell. He is of the Lannik species and also appeared on the Jedi Council and in the end celebration sequence of TPM. They do have similarities in that they have large pointy ears and are short, but the Lannik species have more commonality with humans IMO.

Great points! And great review @Kyle! However I actually didn't like this issue as much as the other ones. Those had more of a cat-and-mouse espionage type of feeling, and while this one did have the rush of the chase, I feel like it was setting up the final issue of this arc and Vader Down to be honest. Either way, I can't wait for the next issue to see where this all goes!

Thank you! I'm very excited about the Vader Down special myself. Should be an interesting story. I'm also hoping they are plan to wrap up the stories that take place exclusively between ANH and TESB. I'm hoping they take the characters beyond ROTJ, or have a Lando series between TESB and ROTJ, or a Vader series in the same gap.

I know we have to wait until after the release of TFA, but I really hope we get some stories set all over the timeline. It's getting harder and harder to buy Luke's naivety in TESB with all the crazy things he's getting himself out of. Then again, maybe they are trying to cover for the fact he became one of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy with less than a day of formal training by Yoda and a lot of his skills were self-taught.

I think Vader needs a third droid in this series. Its name will be Number2 and it is a gastromech droid. It performs colonoscopies during harsh interrogations.
