If you have not read Star Wars #6 or my review of that issue, please do so before reading this review. There is some pretty significant overlap between these issues and I am going to assume that everyone is on the same page here. Potential spoilers ahead and I may have a thing or two to say about The Force Awakens as well. Tread lightly if you are weary of spoilers.

    Screenshot.png

When we last saw Darth Vader, a group of cyborgs trained in the ways of lightsaber combat were closing in on him. The Emperor and another cyborg, Cylo, were awaiting to see how formidable the creations were against the Dark Lord. This issue begins seconds after #5 ended, with the Emperor getting an introduction to each cyborg as Vader defends himself against their various methods of assault. It's a literal fighting pit of mechanization versus the Force.

The backstories of how each of these cyborgs came to be is explained to the Emperor by Cylo as Vader takes them on one by one. There are some familiar traits of a former Separatist general and other backstories. Once the Emperor has seen enough, the fight is over, and the "herd" of creations has been thinned. The Emperor informs them they are all expendable and eventually he will only need one of them.

    Screenshot-1.png

Here's where things get strange. There is no closure about what is to become of these cyborgs. There is still another issue to go, but the cover doesn't indicate it will have anything to do with these cyborgs. The Emperor informs Vader that Cylo has been creating and training these cyborgs for twenty-years and they are all to serve in the Emperor's name when chaos arises. I'm not going to come out and say we see all of these creations or even one of them in The Force Awakens, but I do think as the Journey to The Force Awakens material comes out, our heroes and those stories are going to be dealing with the contingencies the Emperor put in place in case of his death or defeat. I will also say, and this is my sole opinion, I believe Kylo Ren has some connection to this cyborg storyline. This review could quickly turn into a TFA speculative piece, and that's not what I'm trying to do; but, there is a certain piece of art that has circulated showing a gloomy cyborg looking forlorn over a charred Darth Vader helmet. That's all I'm going to say, because there is much more to get to.

The end of this issue is gut wrenching, to say the least. Boba Fett appears, fresh off of losing a fight with Luke Skywalker, to inform Darth Vader that he could not capture the young Rebel. This is the moment Vader learns who Luke is. Salvador Larroca, the series artist, deserves some serious applause from Star Wars fans at the way he captures the emotion in the vacant expression of Vader. Upon hearing the name Skywalker, we take a trip through Vaders mind, as he remembers who he was and who he lost.

    Screenshot-3.png

The last pages should be for you to read on your own. I apologize for the hyperbole, but the end of this issue is stunning.

This is incredibly powerful stuff. We are witness to the beginning of Darth Vader's redemption. We know where his search for Luke will end. The search for Luke is the search for himself. Vader doesn't even realize it, but this issue says to me the good left in him is what compels Vader to find Luke. Vader wants to overthrow the Emperor and he wants to rule the galaxy, but when he thinks of the moment he was strangling his own son and flashing back to the memory of killing Padme (remember, Vader believes he killed her, misinformed by that jerk Sheev). Those panels tell me that all along Vader, despite the terrible things he did to find Luke, something good beneath the evil of the Dark Side drove him there.

Get this issue now! Marvel is knocking it out of the park today. If you have not read Star Wars #6, pick that up as well, because it compliments this issue.

Great review! Just read it, and seeing how Marvel is beautifully tieing in the PT and the OT is amazing! And like you said, the ending just shows how much of a good person Vader, in some ways, still is. He is a villain - but his heart is slowly being repaired. What he thinks now is still anger-fueled, but his sense of love is starting to make little bumps on the metal shell of his.

Awesome ending to another superb Vader issue. Looks like all of those speculators were correct when they were saying that Vader lied to the Emperor about not knowing he had a son in TESB. Can't wait for the next one but I'm seeing there are going to be delays for some of the future issues. ( Lando, Leia and Vader) Great review as always and today was pretty busy. Good job.

What if Andy Serkis' "uber" character is somehow tied to the cyborgs and not Kylo Ren?

His body was covered for Mo-Cap, but not his face... VERY INTERESTING.

Annoying, but if it means better story, fine by me.

Yes annoying and it all started with the Leia series being delayed after the second issue I believe. But has it made her story any better?

Who knows? Maybe Leia would have met Vader again, and then Marvel thinks that idea was too extreme, so it was changed. We'll never know :p

I don't think her series is as bad as a lot of people has been saying it is. Yeah she's better in the Star Wars series but not that bad in her own.

True. I find this series politically, culturally and socially more rich :)

This issue of Vader was...HOLY CRAP...good.

I'm blown away on how Gillen has managed to write a fun and creative Darth Vader story that we haven't seen yet, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME...incorporating the Prequels/Clone Wars series in ways that emotionally enhance the story. Gillen has given Darth Vader more emotional depth than I thought would be possible without being obvious about it.

The last few pages are probably some of my favorite Star Wars comic moments ever...maybe in ALL of Star Wars. Going to have to wait and see how that one works out, but IT'S THAT GOOD!

That was my thought as well. Only time will tell.

From everything we've been hearing, JJ and co. Are shying away from too much involving the PT. With that being the case, I like how we're getting the inter-weaving via other canon media formats.

When Vader says 'I want you to know - I will not fail. And I understand us precisely.' to the Emperor, it was a fist pump moment. Palpatine doesn't know it, but this is the beginning of the end for him. Great scene and great issue.

His face clearly has the mo-cap dots on it as well, just like he had for Lord of the Rings. Take another look and you'll see. If you are on mobile, probably much harder to see, but they are there.

I was disappointed that there wasn't any closure on the cyborgs. But the strong ending more than made up for it. Maybe the idea is that Vader regained his determination after discovering he has a son, and we will see him destroy the cyborgs one by one in the following issues.
In ROTS, on Mustafar, Anakin tells Padme that he will defeat the emperor and they will rule the galaxy together. But then Padme dies and Anakin never does defeat the emperor. In this issue the emperor says he was disappointed with Vader at Mustafar. It seems like Vader has been off his game for the last 20 years, and this is the turning point where he regains his desire to rule the galaxy.

Well, must have missed that :O. Guess a cyborg eye and tech covers his face slightly? I think it's still possible actually.

I think it is possible, too, but it is growing ever more unlikely. I think we are entering into another era of multiple villains with blurry lines of loyalty like we saw in The Clone Wars. Think about it: how else do you create a universe in which there is constant turmoil (read: endless profits)?

This issue sheds a whole new light on the following conversation...here is my new interpretation of the scene given what we now know about Vader's knowledge and intentions.

Darth Vader: What is thy bidding, my master?
Emperor: There is a great disturbance in the Force.
Darth Vader: I have felt it (...he knows...).
Emperor: We have a new enemy, the young Rebel who destroyed the Death Star. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker.
Darth Vader: feigning ignorance> How is that possible?
Emperor: Search your feelings, Lord Vader. You will know it to be true. He could destroy us.
Darth Vader: (So he admits it...he knew Padme survived...) He's just a boy (my SON...). Obi-Wan can no longer help him (But perhaps I can...and we will destroy you together).
Emperor: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi.
Darth Vader: (at last the opportunity I've been waiting for...)If he could be turned, he will become a powerful ally.
Emperor: Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?
Darth Vader: He will join us (me) or die, my master.
