This week we begin a new Darth Vader arc. Make sure to keep that in mind or you may find yourself a bit confused.

The Dark Lord's attention is now fixed on Luke Skywalker, as we saw at the end of issue #6. We find him and his new sidekick back on Tatooine at the remains of the Lars moisture farm. The pieces of what Obi-Wan Kenobi did to protect Luke for so many years are falling into place for Vader.

    Screenshot-1.png

This is a very interesting angle that Kieron Gillen is taking. Vader is using the echoes of the Force to put together what happened with Luke. At the Lars home Vader feels the pain Luke felt when he discovered the charred remains of his adopted family. Vader is also able to put together what happened when Luke encountered Boba Fett at Obi-Wan's hut.

There is also an interesting misconception on Vader's part. It doesn't quite line up with Vader and Luke's first encounter, but Vader seems to assume Obi-Wan has been giving Luke some informal training over the last 20 years. Continuity wise, I think this falls out of line with what we know from TESB as well as Star Wars #2. If Vader believes Luke has been training for 20 years then he must regard Obi-Wan as a pretty sloppy teacher.

    Screenshot-6.png

The story flashes forward to Vader seizing the profits of a Rodian gangster. We see that Vader is making good on his relationship with Jabba and controlling the Outer Rim territories by handing their criminal activities over to one organization rather than deal with all of the other criminal factions. This is a cool look into the political aspect of galactic criminality.

    Screenshot-9.png

By the end of this issue we learn that Doctor Aphra may have some motives of her own...

This issue was a bit scattered for me. I kind of wish the first few pages of Tatooine would have been included in the previous issue or given a dedicated issue. It's a pretty important event and I felt like it was just thrown in there. Even though it was a bit out of place it was good to see.

The artwork and writing continues to be some of the darker and grittier content of these new Star Wars books. Darth Vader had been my favorite of the comics so far and this storyline is looking to continue the par set by previous issues. Well worth your time and money.

    Always impressive @Kyle. Thank you.

Vader assuming that Kenobi had been training Luke DOES fall out of line, but if one wants to split hairs, it could be shoehorned into the existing canon, but in and of itself was a bit confusing to me when I read it here. However remember this, Anakin was full of hatred for Obi-Wan when they last parted and Anakin screamed to Kenobi "I HATE YOU!!" as he watched him walk away. Fast forward to DV #7, he likely has little regard and/or respect for Kenobi as a human being and/or a teacher.

I agree. It's not totally out of line and I see how they could make it work. I didn't consider the "half-empty" view Vader had towards old Obi-Wan at this point

Right, THAT was the first thing I thought of....Anakin's disdain towards Kenobi by the end of...."Anakin". :)

I did not read Vader's 20 years comment to mean that he thought Obi-Wan trained him for that long and failed but rather, "Obi-Wan, you had 20 years...why did you wait so long to train him?" I seriously never even thought about taking that statement the way you guys did. Vader knows Obi-Wan is a good teacher. He knows Luke is strong in the force. He also knows he is inexperienced. I don't think there is a misconception here on his part. I think there is more of a "Why the heck didn't you train him sooner? He could be ridiculously powerful by now if you had..." type of questioning in Vader's mind. I think he wonders why Obi-Wan lay dormant for so long.

Vader doesn't think Obi Wan has trained Luke. He failed in Vader's eyes because he didn't. He had 20 years and he didn't train him until the last moment. For Vader, who recognizes Luke's raw power that is a failure. Of course, he doesn't know Obi Wan's circumstances, namely Owen's refusal to allow him access to Luke and, even if he knew, he would see it as a failure - because Obi Wan is powerful enough to make Owen do what he wants.

Aphra is one step closer to that lightsaber death, if Vader doesn't know about this. It is never wise to go behind Lord Vader's back.

I agree that this issue is not as strong as the previous ones, but it is a beginning of the new arc. I'm curious to see where they will take the story. The art continues to impress me. With Kanan, this is my favorite Marvel's SW comic.

I love your reviews Kyle. I have decided not to engage in the new cannon print media, but I read your reviews to have a cursory understanding of whats going on.

Maybe someone can help me out with the 20 yr thing. Is this a rounded number or did Luke have a birthday just before Obi-Wan was killed? I mean if it was the latter I can see 20 yrs but we know at the start of ANH Luke is 19. Just curious.

Explanation: Most likely just a rounded number.
Statement: I think this is my favorite issue so far. So much stuff happened in one issue, not a panel wasted. It seemed to go on forever (in a good way.)
Query: Am I the only one losing my mind over IG-90?

I was wondering that too. If your referring it to an error but I was thinking a different model #. Wasn't the one in ESB IG-88?

No, I just meant I'm loving it. Can't wait to find out more about him. I like the red coloring. Maybe they'll explain what that is, exactly (some new metal, special coating, whatevs.) Might give us some insight to C3PO's new arm.
And yes, IG-88 was the one in ESB.

*Edit - I just re-read the issue. You think Vader is having Aphra steal that contraband from the Imperials? He made a big show of the Empire confiscating it and how it now belongs to the Empire. A fortune like that would go a long way to help finance his secret agenda.

Great issue. Excited to see what happens to IG-90, Beebox and the wookie. I'm thinking that Vader is behind this to aid his secret plan. And I think this is going to show us how Vader came to know and hire Bossk. I feel like we have another awesome arc coming our way.

Also I wonder if Sutha will be a important character in the future specifically the post ROTJ world?

Yeah, I was also under the impression that Vader was behind Aphra's actions with the bounty hunters. Whether it was his plan to take the goods for his own use or to bring the bounty hunters into a trap of some sort. Maybe a way to force them to do something without having to pay them after he catches them in the act.

Curious, where is it stated how old Luke is in ANH and is that statement still canon?

I don't know if it's been precisely stated officially, but it's been pretty commonplace now to say that ANH takes place 19 yrs after ROTS, thus we can assume that is the age of Luke as well. At this point in time in the Vader / SW comics, Luke is about 20 years old. I think the 19 yrs is pretty official. My son has a Rebels companion book and it lists Ezra's age as 14 and we know from the show that he was born on the very day that Palpatine formed the Galactic Empire in ROTS. Filoni and others within the production have stated that the show begins 5 years prior to ANH. Ezra would be 19 during ANH. So since Luke and Leia were born around that same time, we can assume they are the same age as well. Vader has mentioned "20 years" in a previous issue. I think it's intended to be a rounded number.

In regards to Aphra...she is totally working for Vader...he was talking about working on a very "sensitive" project. Embezzling resources off of the Empire seems pretty sensitive to me, and I doubt Aphra would doublecross him at this point. She seems quite taken with Vader and I don't think it's an act. I think she will eventually, but it's too soon. She is using her connections while under Vader's employ.

As for the bounty hunters...I think we will be seeing Zuckuss and Dengar pretty soon as well. I like the little Mandalorian guy. I wonder if he's human or a species that is generally smaller in stature...maybe a jawa? :)

I haven't read the comic yet, so if my comment is negated entirely by the material in question, please disregard :)

If Vader in this comic thinks that Obi-Wan has trained Luke up even a little, I think it falls in place with the canon just fine. Isn't there a line by Vader in ESB about "Obi-Wan has taught you well" or something similar? He doesn't know about Luke's stint with Yoda, and it almost doesn't make sense in the movies to hear him say that, given the amount of time we all know Luke spent "training" with Obi-Wan.

It seems to me a logical conclusion for Vader to assume that Luke has at least gotten rudimentary instruction in the force from Obi-Wan over the years.

We can also use other evidence to support this conclusion: just because Luke has been training with Obi-Wan, it doesn't mean that he would stand a chance against Vader. All evidence points to the fact that only a full, formally-trained Jedi could defeat Vader. No other force-user who has attempted to take him out has been close to successful. Just because Luke had been training on and off with Obi-Wan through the years wouldn't mean that Vader would have had a more difficult time handling Luke in any of their encounters.

Further, Vader DID sense that the force was strong with Luke in the Death Star run. It seems that there was at least something that Vader respected about Luke, force-wise.

Hope this makes sense, and is actually relevant :)

I think Vader recognized the potential in Luke from the start. But at the same time he also saw that he was greatly inexperienced and unlearned. The comics bring this to light fairly well. He knows Obi-Wan trained him. He just doesn't know how long. He assumes with the force potential he senses in Luke that it wasn't for very long due to his lack of skill. He wonders in this issue why Obi-Wan waited so long to train him. In TESB, he says, "Obi-Wan has taught you well..." because he recognized that Luke's skills have greatly improved since their last encounter, and he doesn't know of Yoda's existence, so I think he assumes that Luke has taken the lessons he received in the past from Obi-Wan and has ran with it, honing his skills on his own. He is most impressed with Luke's performance in the duel. Vader knows Luke spent very little time training with Obi-Wan because of his lack of skill at their first meeting, but assumes Obi-Wan's lessons were not lost on him as his skills improve over time. Little does he know that Yoda actually trained Luke for the most part.

Great review as always, @Kyle. One thing that stood out for me is the seediness of the criminal underground. I think we all knew at the start of ANH, that the criminal underground is much stronger than at the start of TPM. Seeing the Empire not only ignore and let it grow, as I always thought, but also manipulate and strengthen, was really very cool, and to me is the best combination of Anakin's tactical skills and Vader's imposing strength and presence. As I've gotten older, I too have wondered why Obi-Wan never trained Luke, and seeing the author's express it, as well as in the other novels, seems to me that Luke is going to have an epiphany sometime during his training at Dagobah, or during the period between TESB and ROTJ.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Luke's great skills was actually... BLOCKED. Kenobi could have severed a bit of his force connection or wiped memories of his experiences with the force, as to not have Sheev feel him in the galazy, growing strong in the force, like he does in the novel Lords of the Sith. Yoda then removes most of the block, as Luke struggles and quickly opens up his strength in the force beforehand, allowing for a possible explanation for why Luke could duel Vader in TESB and become a full Jedi a year late in ROTJ.

    Just a thought :D

I always also assumed & were thinking that Obi Wan didn't just protect him physical, but also "spiritual"/forcewise, thus needing to be in close proximity. Either blocked his raw force or somehow shielded him so they could not sense him. That could also be an explanation to why Obi Wan never trained Luke, but needed to be close, maybe he had to not only shield (or block Luke) but also himself to avoid being sensed. If he had begun training Luke that block or shield would probably not be effective anymore. Maybe Obi Wan himself was "dorment" letting his powers "sleep" & actually could not train Luke without being detected. . .
