Hey guys! Running a little behind today so the review will not be finished until later this morning or afternoon (PST). A lot to discuss in this issue with bounty hunter heists, double crossing, and a new league of Imperial investigators we never knew about. In short, pick this issue up and hopefully we can all put our heads together to speculate what this all could mean

Look for my review in the next couple of hours.

    Thanks fo your patience!

Well, let's get started. Apologies for the delay.

I've had some time to think about this issue. There are some strange things going on here, but I like it.

First off, for those of you hoping you would get to see a team of bounty hunters conduct a heist on an Imperial ship look no further than the opening pages of this issue. Doctor Aphra, her trusty droids, and a group of familiar bounty hunters are in the midst of a raid on an Imperial ship.

    swdv1.jpg

The ship is a depository for "Credit Ingots", what I'm guessing is the primary form of currency since that's all these bounty hunters seem to be concerned with.

    swdv2.jpg

The heist goes off without a hitch, the bounty hunters collect their loot. We meet our first sinister Wookie named Santy, who ends up not being quite so bad, as he was in league with Doctor Aphra the whole time to double-cross the other bounty hunters collect the lion's share of the spoils.

    swdv3.jpg

Turns out the Wookie doesn't know who he is actually working for...Darth Vader.

This issue then takes a pretty sharp turn back to Imperial affairs. Several Imperial installations have fallen victim to similar raids by a criminal organization called "The Plasma Devils". This is never clearly spelled out, but "The Plasma Devils" seem to be the group of bounty hunters and the heist we saw is the final straw for Grand Admiral Tagge.

    swdv4.jpg

Tagge dispatches the various cyborg assassins from issues #5-6. We can see they don't all get along very well and their disdain for Vader is only rivaled by the one he reciprocates. As soon as they are all off, Tagge introduces Vader to a new Imperial officer...Inspector Thanoth.

    swdv6.jpg

Inspector Thanoth is a monocled fellow who looks like a nod to Sherlock Holmes. He is not at all intimidated by Darth Vader and we see his intellect is sharper than the Dark Lord has expected. Yes, Thanoth has a pretty good idea Vader of the trouble Vader is trying to stir up in the galaxy, and the issue ends before we find out what is to become of these strange bedfellows.

It should also be noted Vader has put finding Luke Skywalker as his priority. This side-business with Doctor Aphra and her thugs is a necessary distraction his methodical game to rule the galaxy, but finding Skywalker is a task he throws himself in front of at every mention in this issue.

    swdv5.jpg

This story is a little more scattered than the previous arc, but I've no complaints. I think this is going to be just as well told in the same hands of writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca. The first Star Wars Anthology film has some rumors swirling around it at the moment that made my eyebrows raise a bit more after reading this issue. I'm not going there yet and I can hear your collective SIGHS at this mention, but there could be something...

Thank you all for your patience today with the delayed post. If you have been following the Darth Vader series, this is certainly worth your time. If you have not then you should get yourself caught up because they aren't slowing down and explaining things to anyone.

I agree that the issue was a bit disjointed, but I liked the heist and I am curious what task Vader had given Aphra. I also like that everyone is throwing obstacles in front of Vader and, while we know that these people will eventually fail, I wonder how Vader will deal with it, especially with the inspector character. Most of Anakin's successes came from skill and daring; Vader, on the other hand, had to learn to play smarter, longer game considering who he is working for. We saw some of that in Rebels, I hope Gillen will show us his cunning and his planning abilities. This is more a set up issue than anything else, so, as you said, I am not complaining.

The art continues to impress me. It's a difficult task to convey emotions of the character who is under the mask, without movement and sound and, yet, somehow I always know what Vader feels.

I agree with everything you just said. The real fun of the Vader comic isn't so much where Vader's going to end up (hint: it's called The Empire Strikes Back), but rather it's in seeing how he manages to deal with everything that gets in his way. For instance, I'm really excited to see how he deals with Thanoth. He can't just burn through these guys assigned to watch over him, or Tagge would get really suspicious (which I'm guessing he already kinda is), but on the other hand, Thanoth is really good at his job... which isn't so great for Vader (what with his whole "sabatoge my Master" thing going on), so he can't really let him stick around too much either.

It reminds me most specifically of something like a James Bond film. Okay, of course he's going to succeed, but how?

I am pretty sure that we have seen the Wookiee before. Isn't he Black Krrsantan (Vader #1, #4, #7)? Santy seems to be his nickname.

When you mentioned the encounter with the Mon Cal it made me think of something. I went back to issue #6 to look at this creature and it is the General Grievous looking dude with 4 arms and sabers. Now what if this forthcoming duel is the one mentioned in the upcoming book Star Wars: The Weapon of a Jedi where it "explores a dangerous duel between Luke and a strange new villain" ? This book takes place between IV and V so it could be possible that this duel may not even take place in the series but in the book. And that would connect the comics to the novels or a novel. Just a guess.

I stand corrected. Thank you for catching that. Sometimes my Head gets fuzzy week to week with each arc.

I like your thinking and I hope you are right. If this is canon then we need more Luke development. I imagine if this Vader arc will cross over with the next Star Wars arc. Should be fun to watch it unfold!

No worries. I always enjoy reading your reviews. I am interested to find out who cut Black Krrsantan up. I have a suspicion that Vader already knows. I am also curious about your thoughts regarding the Rogue One rumors. Maybe you can give them in another thread.

Gotta love triple zero. At one point he reminds me so much of C3P0 and a page later he goes all psycho and all he talks about is torture and running low on credits.
Really great issue. I've always loved bounty hunters so this was great. Bosssssssk issssss great.

Love...love...love.... The Vader series continues to be my favorite of all the ongoing SW series. I love how we are seeing Vader moving all the pieces into place for his return to the #2 spot. @Kyle I also have a theory about a connection between Rogue One and the Vader series. It's not one I completely buy into myself, but it has crossed my mind... We see that Aphra has a connection to some of the best bounty hunters in the galaxy. Now going from an early rumor of the Rogue One plot...it was said the film would be about a group of bounty hunters/mercs that were hired by the Rebellion to steal the death star plans. What if this group is the one we are seeing in this series and what if Aphra is among them (portrayed of course by Felicity Jones)? Later in this series, Vader finds out about her involvement in the plot which led up to his greatest failure and gives her the quick death by lightsaber she had previously requested. Just a thought.

Out of curiosity did anyone else get the upside down frame in their issue? Didn't know if it was a mistake or if it signified whatever it was they were on being upside down.

My thoughts exactly. I was nervous about bringing this up because I often go looking for these connections. I think it is not outside the realm of possibility. I expect some character confirmations as soon as the MI Rogue Nation embargo is lifted or around D23

I think the panel was intended to show us the upside-down orientation of the characters. I thought the dialogue being upside-down was strange though. But regardless, it's not just your copy. :)

Then again it has been rumored that Tatiana Maslany is tied to Rogue One...Honestly, I could see her as Aphra before Jones. She has the look.

Strange. I got my copy through comiXology. I subsribe to all the SW series that way they just automatically download onto my iOS app and I can access them while at work through my iPhone. Sometimes they aren't available until later in the morning. Of course the day I was running behind this one downloaded the second I got out of bed (5am PST).

At this point, @jrosche , you should contact the administrator. Must be a technical error.

Aphra called the loot "rich stuff."
Total The Goonies shout out. Mikey called One-Eyed Willie's loot "rich stuff" too.
Just a fun little something I noticed.
