New look, same great story. The Kanan series has so far performed with the most consistency in terms of story quality with each issue. This series leads the Star Wars comic pack with a great backstory that sets the stage for Rebels and helps tie-up the immediate aftermath in regards to Revenge of the Sith.

We know the journey of Caleb Dume, Padawan learner, took after Order 66 left him alone in the galaxy. He chose to hide his knowledge of the Force and any indication he was a Jedi, taking on the identity of Kanan Jarrus, criminal extraordinaire. In issue #6, we catch up with Kanan where this series first again, on board the Rebel ship Ghost, on approach to the planet Kaller. Because they are still referring to Ahsoka Tano as 'Fulcrum', I assume this takes place sometime in the first season of Rebels.

The art is a huge departure from both the first five issues artist Pepe Larraz and the Disney animation of Rebels. It's nice to see the cast of Rebels under a new artist's impression. I personally prefer the first five issues, but artist Jacopo Camagni does a fine job of letting us know we are in a different time period. Also, "The Last Padawan" moniker has been dropped from this issue, with the addition of "Epilogue" in the opening pages.

The Ghost crew have put down on Kaller under the orders of Fulcrum. They are on a "milk run", but the cargo they are after is gone and has been replaced with blasters in their face. Their welcome party to Kaller is none other than Gamut, now a full Imperial governor of Kaller. After a brief run-in, the crew is allowed to go on their way, but Hera decides they need to stay and track down the missing cargo they were to retrieve.

    IMG_0002.jpg

The whole crew notices that the usual mister-too-cool-for-school-Kanan is not himself on Kaller. As they search the streets of Plateau City (another Rebels-locale we don't nearly get as close a look at as we should), Kanan splits up the group to cover his uneasiness, taking only Chopper with him. As he moves through the city, visions of himself from the past haunt him. It's unclear if these visions are in his mind's eye or if these are echoes from the past he experiences through the Force. Either way, Camagni's art is at it's best in these frames. Kanan looks deeply disturbed, seeing himself as a starving Padawan, barely living and scouring through garbage for food.

    IMG_0004.jpg

Kanan suspects his old friend Kasmir may have something to do with the missing cargo he and his friends were sent to fetch. He makes his way back to his old haunts. If Kasmir doesn't have it, he might be able to help Kanan track it down. Tapuk, a member of the same species, and his cronies greet Kanan. Even alone among the most unreliable thugs, Kanan resists the temptation to use his lightsaber. I have to think it's a combination of so many years spent hiding for his own protection and his new instincts that have overwritten Caleb Dume.

    IMG_0006.jpg

The Imperial governor, Gamut, who lets it be known he remembers Kanan, ends up saving the day. We are set up for an exciting conclusion with the prospect of the Rebels crew getting a new defector. Who knocks Kanan out cold at the end of this issue?

Don't get me wrong. This issue, like the series, is great! My only gripe with this one is you would be a little lost if you have not seen Rebels. That being said, this may give you incentive to watch a few episodes. I'm personally a fan of the show. I don't think it's hit it's stride yet, but it's off to a great start with the first season. If you've been following this arc and have somehow avoided Rebels, now may be the time to refresh your Disney XD subscription or order the first season on Blu-Ray. You will want to be acquainted with the Kanan of that time-period, because he is very different from the one you meet in this issue, as well as Caleb Dume.

Don't miss this issue and keep your eyes peeled next month for it's conclusion!

While I haven't liked Kanan as much as a lot people up to this point (though I thought it was alright), I think that this was a huge step up in quality. I griped in the discussion about #5 that I didn't understand the framing device, but know I think I get it (still not a huge fan of it though).

What happened on Kaller before is *necessary* to understand this issue. I think I was under the impression at the time that this was more or less a stand alone issue, but it's not. It's definitely an epilogue to The Last Padawan, or at the very least a bridge between it and First Blood. In particular, I like the memory-apparitions we get in the background as Kanan is walking around, and the way that it sets us up for what's next with that ending.

The only thing I wasn't a fan of was Kanan's narration. It's been a sore spot for me pretty much since the start, but here when it seemed every other line was recapping info that we already have gotten in previous issues, it seemed even more unnecessary than usual.

All in all though, a really good issue, I'm now excited to see where we go with First Blood

I think there will be no conclusion, Kyle. The second arc begins in the next issue - Kanan/Caleb's first mission as padawan during the Clone Wars. I suspect this will be ongoing adventure between the arcs.

Good issue, but I want more Caleb! Kanan sure lost his cool in this issue. I didn't like how Hera was drawn and some of her dialogue was... lame to say the least. 'What's the matter, luv? You miss me?' is so not Hera. But, action was good, Kanan obviously doesn't need the lightsaber to kick ass. And, I like Kallerans. So shady. :D

I agree on the purpose of the issue. It seems the series will continue to jump back and forth using present day events in the Rebels era to call back to past events in Kanan's life. This next arc will definitely show us more Caleb as it is set during the Clone Wars, which I am looking forward to. Even though the "last padawan" moniker was dropped from the cover, the issue still had the "Book I - The Last Padawan" arc title followed by "Epilogue" in the crawl. This was the conclusion of this arc in a sense, but it also showed us that the next one would be connected, since it left us on a sort of cliffhanger.

I like the character depictions for the most part in the art. The major differences to me were with the female characters. Sabine looked a little more light skinned to me, and I noticed Hera's pants were more form-fitting giving her a "sexier" look. As for her dialogue, I disagree, especially with the example you gave. To me it sounds just exactly like something she would say to Kanan on the show.

@Kyle I noticed you mentioned something about Gamut Key knocking Kanan out at the end of the issue. I didn't think that was the case when I read it. It seemed to me like he just passed out from blood loss from his stab wound. I could be wrong though. Great review!

I see how that's confusing. I meant to state the cliffhanger: Who knocks out Kanan at the end?

Oh, I see what you meant now. I read it as to mean that this possible defector ends up knocking him out...anyways... I still think it was from the stab wound.

Thank you for catching that. I went back and changed it. Too much coffee before the review.

I really liked this issue! Honestly, I wasn't a fan of the cover art style and the fact that they seemingly continued this series (because IIRC, this was supposed to be only 5 or 6 issues long) but this issue put my mind at ease. Great review @Kyle, and while I love your reviews (and think they're the best!), I've been reading other ones and have found that this series seems to be more...polarizing than other ones usually are. Either way, I can't wait for the next issue!

Edit: Although this might be random, it's been bothering me for some time now - what color is Ezra's hair canonically supposed to be?!? In this issue (and #1 IIRC) Ezra's hair is black. In the Servants of the Empire Jr novels it's described as black I believe, but in the show it's blue. Now usually I would go to the show as default, but this is the second time a non-show source has made Ezra's hair non-blue. Help, please?

Great review @Kyle. I like the change to the art style, because it was a good replacement for the already amazing work, and gave a bit more flair to the characters. I am confused whether or not we will see the end of this arc, as the next is from the first of Kanan's adventures in TCW, and confirms Depa Bilaba went through some crazy stuff, sorta like a pseudo-Shatterpoint, but the others after are also not set during Rebels. I do wonder if this standalone will tie in to the earlier arc, like in his coma or something, Kanan remembers this stuff? Who knows, but a good continuation and bridge from a 5-issue miniseries to an ongoing one.
