I got all sorts of fanboy while reading this issue, and I'm sure you will too, whatever your gender. I was hoping they would take us back to Kanan's glory days as a Jedi before that fateful night on Kaller. Looks like I got my wish.

    image.jpeg

When we last left Kanan, he was out cold from loss of blood. On the first page we find him soaking in a Bacta tank, surrounded by the rest of the Ghost crew. We all know Jedi dream and it looks like Kanan's about to go right back down the rabbit memory hole. A very young Caleb Dume, honing his lightsaber skills under an instructor he is just a little bit taller than. Say hello to Yoda in his first canonical comic appearance. Pretty cool.

    image.jpeg

We see that young Caleb is right in that awkward age between youngling and padawan. Questioning his teachers is just beginning to emerge. Another Jedi, a little grumpier one, raises an eyebrow to young Caleb's questions. Upon a trip to the infirmary to mend a small lightsaber gash, Caleb stumbles upon Master Depa Billaba, in a Bacta tank of her own. Caleb feels drawn to her and we know it was the Force bringing them together.

    image.jpeg

There is some great BTS Clone War stuff we never got to see in the Jedi Temple. Master Billaba returned from a mission that put her face to face with General Grievous, and from the sounds of it, the Republic did not come out victorious. It's whispered that almost no one walked away from the battle with their life. Mace Windu and Yoda are skeptical of Billaba's mental state, while Obi-Wan is just relieved she made it out alive. Was it just me, or does old Kenobi seem kind of sweet on Depa Billaba? Just checking.

    image.jpeg

Billaba is no ones fool. She is well aware the Jedi and their underlings view her as damaged.

    image.jpeg

Other younglings even warn Caleb away from the Jedi Master, but he can't ignore his feelings. The boy is drawn to her by the will of the Force. As they converse over meditation we see an explosive situation is about to draw them together.

    image.jpeg

I cannot wait for this series to continue. Not only are we getting some expanded Rebels knowledge, but we are visiting old friends from The Clone Wars. I'm so happy we are getting a peak behind the curtain of the day-to-day in the Jedi Temple. I've always wanted to see the process of a Padawan beginning their training. It looks like we will get a first hand account and a little more insight into who Kanan will be as a teacher to Ezra.

This issue is well worth your money and time. The artwork by Pepe Larraz alone is worth the cover price Go get it now!

This comic is just getting better and better. I LOVE IT!

Caleb is such precious character - mischievous, curious and honest. I liked how he was asking questions the same way he was asking Obi-Wan in the prologue of A New Dawn. The art showed brilliantly how other Jedi react to that - Windu is always frowning, but Depa is laughing. Plus, when in doubt, he doesn't presume, he goes straight to Billaba to ask her. They are obviously compatible. I already love them together.

I don't think Obi-Wan has a crush on her, I think he is just genuinely happy that she is well and not suspicious of her abilities like the others. He is an honest one too.

The artwork was amazing from the beginning, I love how expressive it is, and it's still great. Everyone should read this comic. I cannot wait for more. :)

The artwork is so great! I like to think of Obi-Wan as the old smoothie of the Jedi, but you're probably right. Windu is such a downer all the time :(

@Kyle great review! I think this has been one of my favorite issues of new Star Wars Canon comicbooks to date - definitely in the top ten (the fact that I can have a top ten now is scary...).

I like the parallels between Kanan and Depa; not only the bacta tank healing, but the fact that they've both been shaped and scarred by the Clone Wars, and that affects them when they teach their Padawans. They aren't perfect - they're damaged goods, but they own up to it and move beyond. I'm excited to see where this arc goes and I can't wait for the next issue!

If the circumstances are right, I can ship it ;)
That being said I think it's just Obi-Wan being the friendly Jedi we know and love (and that Anakin rarely ever sees).

Great comic! The artwork is amazing! Just seeing the artist's renditions of the Rebels cast is a sight to see! You get a different layer of their personalities through the way they are drawn and through their facial expressions. This series is a must!

Yes indeed! I could not agree more with you on their emotional wounds from The Clone Wars. I have yet to watch the 2 season two Rebels episodes yet, but I hear Kanan is awfully skeptical of their involvement with three clones they encounter.

Did we spot Anakin with R2D2 when Caleb was walking around in the Jedi Temple with his two friends?

I noticed this also and I'm glad you posted the panel. Saves me the time. Great cameo. :)

Depa looks more like a youthful supermodel in the new canon, which is not really how she came across on screen originally (below). This stands out with her facial features, especially her nose (looks like she had a little work done in this department). But I don't mind so much as I like how her character is being fleshed out, and I am loving her and Kanan's relationship. I wonder if they will get into her being Mace's former padawan like she was in the EU?

Anyways, the Kanan comic series is my favorite overall for its consistency with good story telling and expressive artwork (as @LadyMusashi points out). This issue may even be my favorite, and it was all set-up basically, which bodes well for what will inevitably be a more action packed issue #8.

Is that mission the reason why she's not on the Council in ROTS?

Do you mean the actual mission or the fallout from the mission's failure? I think it's likely she chooses not to rejoin the council due to her failure, and that is why she is not on it in Ep 3. But we also know that she is on Kaller with Kanan at the time, so it's possible she is still on the council but is just away on mission and is unable to attend or appear via hologram.

I think the former (mission failure) is more likely, since someone is sitting in her seat in ROTS!

    This issue is fantastic!
I just started reading the Kanan series and I have to say, I think it's my favorite of all the Star Wars comics. The story telling is consistently amazing and the artwork is top shelf!

I love how they show Caleb's curiosity, and the connection between him and Depa Billaba. It was also great seeing Yoda in a new canon comic.

I missed that. I think you're right! I love that.

    Great review @Kyle

Did anyone else notice that they seem to have changed the Jedi Code?

    Original Code:

There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the force.

    New Code:

    Emotion, yet peace.
    Ignorance, yet knowledge.
    Passion, yet serenity.
    Chaos, yet harmony.
    Death, yet the force.

Pretty sure that's how it was with the Original Code being phased out over time and replaced by the attack on Ossus.

I noticed the difference as well. However, the novel Dark Disciple, which is also canon, includes the original code verbatim. So this is probably just an abbreviated version conducive to the meditation exercise.

Interesting, I guess the version they use in this comic is the original code from the EU, which was phased out for the one we are more familiar with.

Yeah, I noticed they used the more familiar code in Dark Disciple as well. Your explanation is as good as any at this point, I asked Greg Weisman on twitter, so maybe he'll give us a bit of clarification.

I will say this though, the two different versions of the code do seem to be useful for different reasons. The more familiar version seems to apply to decision making, and the "original" seems to apply more to real life situations. For instance, we all know that things like ignorance and emotion actually exist, and that Jedi also possess these qualities. However when making decisions, the more familiar version of the code would be much more helpful. The "original" version of the code seems to apply more to how one functions as a Jedi in situations that they encounter in the real world.
