Well, after the onslaught of Star Wars comics last week I was able to catch my breath and take a refreshing read of this latest Kanan issue.

    Screenshot_1.jpg

I'm all in on Kanan. I was admittedly skeptical about this series simply because I went in not thinking too much of the titular character. You've changed me, Marvel. I'm very pleased this series is adding a depth to Kanan, and I'm even more excited for season 2 of Rebels.

    Screenshot_4.jpg

This issue starts out with Kanan making a getaway from a slew of those weird, X-Wing like fighters we saw in Revenge of the Sith. This is a shoot to kill chase, but Kanan just squeezes by them and jumps into hyperspace.

The hard truth hits our young Padawan once again: where the hell to go in a galaxy that is hunting not only you, but everyone and everything you are? This walks the line of redundancy from the last issue, but I think they pull it off. Kanan really feels lost and hopeless, and with the ability to travel anywhere, he turns right around and heads back to Kaller to return the stolen ship.

    Screenshot_5.jpg

Kasmir, the scoundrel/thief he stole the ship from, realizes the young man with Force abilities will thrive under guidance of any kind. Kanan realizes the same thing and starts his journey to the more shadowy corners of the galaxy. The criminal underworld is the only place he may be safe.

    Screenshot_7.jpg

The transformation from Caleb the Padawan to Kanan is completed here. We see Kanan dismantle his lightsaber and put aside anything that may indicate he is connected to the Jedi Order. This issue ends with a cliffhanger, but I feel the Greg Weisman, the writer of this series, is keeping great cadence with the story development. This is not bumping and twisting like the Leia series has run into. I'm excited to see where it goes and how it ends. Hopefully this is not the last of the Rebels characters that gets the Marvel treatment.

Janus is like Kalleran Han Solo pre-ANH - a good heart but never misses to pull a fast one in a tight spot. I bet this is how the cliffhanger is resolved too. I like him - this is where Kanan learned to be a cowboy.

Well, our young ex-padawan now only needs a new name to become Kanan we know and love.

From all the Marvel's new SW comics, I like this one the best. And I am sad that only two issues are left.

    YES! ZEB ORRELIOS!

I enjoyed this issue. So is it confirmed now that it is only a 5 issue run? I look forward to seeing how he gets his new name in the next couple of issues. I wouldn't mind some more Rebels comics also. A Hera or Zeb series, or a team-up mini-series with all three that takes place before season 1 would be cool.

I was a little confused at one point with Caleb's artistry. In the first few pages he has shorter hair and then we see him before he intervenes with the negotiations with longer hair. At first I thought it was a new character. Other then that it was a good issue.

According to the new Star Wars Insider this is going to be an ongoing series.

You are correct, I checked after I posted my reply - the arc will have five issues then it will change the writer.

The long hair was suppose to represent the passage of time, but, yes, maybe it could have been a bit clearer.

There were a few frames in between the short hair and the long hair that depict planetary rotation. This was to allude to the passage of time, but like you it took me a second to realize it. I was like..."Who is this girl?" lol

Great issue! Like the rest of you, I also noticed the gair getting longer panel by panel. I suppose that ultimately it's not very important ... but I was wondering just how much time actually elapsed during tgis change.

It's hard to tell much from the planetary movements as we have no information about them, however we can see that the fourth frame is almost exactly opposite the second, so we can assume a good little while has passed. The biggest clue is the hair I think. Hair grows about 1/2" or 1.25cm every month. I think realisticly about a year and a half to two years passes on this page.

    Agreed...

@Viral Hide...if by still fresh you mean that Kanan has held to its originality, I most definitely agree. That's one of the reasons I enjoy this comic so much. There are virtually no "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" moments in this series. Even though I enjoy the other series that are in print, there is a lot of that going on. So far there hasn't even been much of that in relation to Rebels either (aside from how Kanan got his look). What I mean is I love how they are creating new characters here and not just finding new ways that they can creatively insert old favorites while skirting on the edge of plausibility and contradiction. I have enjoyed the new comics, but I hope moving forward we will see more of the new and less of the old. I know there is a team entirely devoted to making sure it doesn't happen, but all the same I fear that the more we see in print of characters that were on screen, the more risk there is of contradictions and character dilution. The Boba Fett / Luke fight was cool but was really pushing the boundaries for me. They've done a great job so far, but it makes me nervous...kind of like when I was watching the Clone Wars and every episode where Grievous showed up it's like they wanted to see how close they could allow Anakin to get to him without actually letting them meet. They succeeded and it was always Obi-Wan who confronted him, but for me and my OCD, it was hard to relax and enjoy it because I always had in the back of my mind that they are on the verge of contradicting ROTS which is obviously the first time Grievous meets Anakin. Anyways...I digress. Kanan is a great series.

I love the story this is telling. For me it's doing a great job of bridging the gap between Revenge of the Sith and Rebels/A New Hope. I predict we'll see a lot more of the early Empire and get into some of the fundamental birth of rebellion. I know we'll see it become a full-fledged Alliance in Rebels, but getting a sense of the lawless scoundrels whose "gray morality" is tempered by loathing of the Empire really gives the Rebellion a lot more depth.

Great review @Kyle. I gotta say, Kanan for me personally is right behind the Vader series. It's really a great story, and the artwork is AMAZING. As for the"Cowboy Jedi", I feel we'll see heroism and reckless need to save people once the series shifts over to simply Kanan. But then again, ti would have to not interfere with A New Dawn, where he is still reluctant until he meets Hera. I guess we will have to see.

I think they will continue the current format of starting an arc within the current Rebels timeline and show Kanan thinking back on an event in his past. I think it will jump around in the timeline a little bit. I hope we will see a lot of stories with Kanan and Hera after A New Dawn. Maybe we'll see how Zeb, Chopper, and Sabine join the crew as well.

I was wondering what those planets/moons were meant to represent. But your explanation makes sense, and explains the long hair. I was actually confused when Caleb cut off his braid because I thought he had already done that in the previous issue. But I was getting it mixed up with some Knights of the Old Republic comics I've been reading, which also have a padawan who cuts his braid and goes on the run.

Anyway, this was another great issue. Caleb's constant "What do I do now?" refrain seems like a cheap trick an author might use to add drama where there is none, but somehow in this comic it actually works. I totally buy into Caleb's character. So great writing by Greg Weisman.

I LOVE the KOTOR comic series. I subscribed to Marvel Unlimited last month and that was the first series I read. Zayne Carrick is a good character and reminds me a lot of Kanan.

Yeah, I think it works because they are really just trying to highlight how lost a Jedi who survived order 66 would be, especially any younger knights or padawans. It makes the fact that Kanan survived through till at least the Rebels timeframe like quite an accomplishment, and that he was lucky to get the help/advice that he has gotten along the way which we have only begun to see. Or maybe it was something other than luck.

I love the Kanan story primarily because it tells the story of ONE of the Jedi that escaped Order 66. There were so many that were convinced that the Jedi were wiped out completely sans Yoda and Kenobi and I always knew there was no way that was true.

Kanan is street smart and will play a pivotal role in the early stages of the rebellion (as we're seeing), and while his demise seems inevitable, I'd love to see or hear his name referenced in on-screen canon as a historical reference. I look forward to every one of these reviews. Great job @Kyle!

I think the way they're establishing Janus is brilliant (and his helmet looks great). This series has a dark undertone, whilst still maintaining the adventurous theme of Star Wars, which is fantastically done. Definitely the best series of them thus far in my opinion!

In my opinion one of the greatest sw comics of all time. Although it would be better if this came before Rebels. Now we now that Kanan cannot die. It would be more exciting if we didn't know the character.

I don't think it would have been possible releasing the entire comic before Rebels. Everyone would be wondering who this random Jedi is, and if Lucasfilm so much as said, "He'll be important one day, just wait," that'd immediately reveal that he survives.
