The fourth issue continues the non-stop rollercoaster ride we have been on since Kanan had that flashback in Ghost in the first issue. The cadence of this series has been great. It's not too fast-paced that it skimps on story and character development, but it's fast enough to keep you flipping through the pages in anticipation of what comes next. The consensus among the fans here and other things I have read is Marvel knocked it out of the park with this series. In my opinion, they took a barely likable character and gave fans an entirely new perspective on him. Bravo, Marvel! Bravo, LFL Storygroup! Bravo, Greg Weisman/Pepe Larraz! On with the review.

At the end of issue #3, we saw Kanan double-crossed and about to be handed over to some goons who would then hand him over to a group of Clone Troopers. Kasmir, the criminal Kanan put his trust in, seems to be more interested in the large bounty on Kanan's head then helping the boy. Well, turns out there were larger ambitions in the mind of Kasmir, and he decides to travel the galaxy "selling" Kanan off to different scum. Kanan takes to this new life of scheming, but we do see the wake of death it leaves as the Clone Troopers become more vicious with each thug they track Kanan to.

Remember General Kleeve? He was that rather unsightly, demonic looking Separatist leader we saw defeated in the first issue. Well, he's back, and it turns out he is one of the "heroes on both sides" the Revenge of the Sith crawl referred to. Kleeve points out to Kanan that they were both betrayed. Kanan realizes his enemy may now be his ally. The former general has been reduced to spice smuggling, and Kanan arrives just as his new friend Kasmir is arrested by the Clone Troopers. Kleeve is the only one who can help Kanan rescue him. They hatch a plan, but by the end of the issue, we find nothing really ever works out for the last Padawan.

This is the penultimate issue, so there is a lot to look forward to in the conclusion. Count on Greg Weisman bringing us a satisfying close. Pepe Larraz's art continues to shine along the way. I hate to be redundant here, but you are missing out in a big way if you are avoiding this series just because you don't like or have little interest in Rebels. I've heard folks say they have not taken a liking to Rebels or are not interested because it's a "kids" show. Whatever your feelings are about Rebels, this series is great. You don't even have to watch the show to get it, and I'm betting Weisman had that in mind when he wrote it. I'm a fan of Rebels so it's that much more enjoyable for me, but I would not consider an affinity for the show required to appreciate the good storytelling we have. Aside from the depth it lends a very 2-D character in the Rebels series, we get to see how ruthless the hunt for the Jedi was around the galaxy and how proficient the Empire was in hunting down the last of the Jedi. Maybe it will give any of you Rebels-naysayers second thoughts, as well.

Go get this book now and thank me later ;)

It was a good continuation of young Kanan's life. I assume the name Kanan Jarrus will make its appearance in the last issue of the first arc. I do admit that Kana, an already interesting character, became more interesting when you figure that he even has to deal with his former enemies like allies, and gives more weight to why he distrusts Captain Rex in Season 2 of Rebels, seeing as his comrades, Styles and Grey, have now gone full cold-blooded and are going to kill Kanan. Great review @Kyle!

I'm thinking we'll get his name too in the next issue. I'm also guessing that it will be taken out of memory for his only "friend" Janus Kasmir who will probably not survive. But yes, this has been an enjoyable series and wish now it was a few issues longer.
And on a side note I found out today that Shattered Empire will have two issues in September and two in October. Didn't know if that was known or not.

@Kyle great review. I agree with your thoughts on this series. It is a breath of fresh air in the world of SW comics. I enjoy the main series and Vader, but this one just keeps surprising me. I loved the little "light-saver" bit at the beginning. I don't know how many times I've heard this come out of the mouths of the Star Wars illiterate and I see I am not the only one. :) I'm super excited for the conclusion, but I kind of hope we get a continuation of this series. I also think that the name "Kanan Jarrus" is an anagram (sort of) of Janus Kasmir. The names definitely have similar letters. For a second, I thought that Kleeve might actually end up being Vizago from Rebels, but that thought only lasted a secong as I realized Vizago didn't know Kanan was a Jedi and the eye thing looks like a cybernetic implant and not just an accessory. It was cool seeing him turn up out of the blue though. Did any one else see the Wookiee in the holding cell?

I love the art especially how they draw Janus Kasmir and his facial expressions - you know he's a shady guy but you also have to like him.

This makes me want season 2 of Rebels even more - the clones not just killed his master and the rest of the Jedi, but hunted Kanan like an animal. Boy, will he not be happy with Rex & Co.

I also feel that, unfortunately, Kasmir would die (though I don't want him to). I would be interested to see how they would continue the comic because Last Padawan is just the first arc. This is the cover of issue 6:

Do you think any of the characters from The Last Padawan (Janus Kasmir, General Kleeve) might at some point appear in Rebels?

I love the images of Depa Billaba in this issue -- looming over Kanan's shoulder with a disagreeable look on her face.

I think as the series continues they will introduce more rebels characters. If we see any characters from the series so far it would be Kleeve or Kasmir, but I think something will happen to Kasmir in the next issue...just a hunch. And Kleeve is not really that important of a character. The only other prominent characters are the clones and I doubt we'll see them show up in Rebels. But I think we might get some backstory on some of the characters that are already on the show like Zeb or Sabine.

This was another good issue in the series. These comics keep ending on a cliffhanger and leave me wanting more! I think it will be good when the next issue comes out to read the whole arc through in one sitting.

Someone help me out what's the name of Max Rebo's species?
I remember seeing pictures from now legends where they have arms and legs. Looks like they just got two legs now (and no arms) in the new canon. That was the original idea for the species, right?
