Let's get down to business. This is THE issue we were waiting for. If there were any hints to be had about Luke's post-ROTJ/pre-TFA role, this would be the issue they would drop. Upon reading the first issue, I thought Rucka and co. we're cruelly going to taunt us with Luke's only cameo in the series being the Lambada shuttle radio transmissions. I was relieved when the cover was revealed. We get Luke, and surprisingly, a happy ending set against the bittersweet backdrop of a galaxy in uncertainty.

    image.jpeg

Three months have passed since the Battle of Endor. The remnants of the Empire have been busy burying the Emperor's Sith souvenirs and convoluting the galaxy. Shara Bey is at a crossroads; attempt to let go and go back to her family, or stay and fight an endless conflict. That decision has already been made for her, but there is one more person who needs her help before she heads off into the sunset.

    image.jpeg

    Luke Skywalker.

    image.jpeg

The details of the mission are not made clear to Shara as she and Luke set off to Vetine, location of another ISB lab. This one is in possession of something the Emperor stole. I got the "Oh my God Luke is going after a Sith relic!!!" jitters why I read this. Shara will pose as an Imperial officer called Beck, while Luke and Artoo pose as her bodyguards. Luke has a good hiding spot for his lightsaber, as we've seen before.

    image.jpeg

    image.jpeg
What the Emperor stole were two trees from the heart of the Jedi Temple. How Luke knew this is beyond me, but perhaps a certain Force ghost(s) told him. Hopefully this will be cleared up somewhere down the comic/literature line, because I think I'm even more confused about Luke than I was before reading this. As they make their way deep into the lab, we see more of those strange droids that projected the Emperor's last orders being assembled. Weird.

    image.jpeg
    image.png
It doesn't take long for things to go bad and Luke needing to retrieve his lightsaber, once again. It's nice to see the Jedi dispatch Stormtroopers. The trees are very fragile and cannot be dropped. Luke deals with the troopers while Shara handles the trees. They make it out alive, blow the installation to bits, and head out. Was it just me or did Shara seem a bit puzzled with Luke blowing the base to pieces? Hmmm....

    image.jpeg

Luke was not counting on finding two trees. He gives the second tree to Shara, part housewarming gift and the other part giving her stewardship over the important plant. Shara Bey and Kes Dameron plant it in their backyard and live happily ever after.

I did not expect either of Poe's parents to make it out of these four books alive. It just seems that every major SW character is required to be an orphan. I'm happy to be wrong and I certainly hope we see more of them. Maybe we even get a cameo in the sequel trilogy? It was nice to see Luke as a steadfast Jedi Knight who could focus solely on restoring the good will of the Force rather than be hunted by the Sith or decide whether to kill his old man or not. I really hope we get a little bit more of a glimpse into Luke's life before he vanishes into the non-existence TFA is setting up.

This was a great issue and a great conclusion to a series that only disappoints me because of its short length. Marvel should hand Greg Rucka the keys to the SW comic book kingdom and produce more of these Shattered Empire titles. Even if they don't involve major characters from the OT, I'm sure we would all love to see what is happening around the rest of the galaxy. My hat is off to a series that could not have been better executed. Hope these folks are drinking champagne and patting themselves on the back to a job well done.

Buy all of these and write Marvel aggressive emails demanding more!

All that action over trees must of been some good space weed.when Luke said he was going after something the emperor stole and stores in A lab I thought Luke was referring to his hand or original lightsaber

I liked how Luke is relying completely on the Force in combat post ROTJ. It's nice to see him with such a handle on his skills so early. Long gone are the days of failing to lift the x-wing out of the swamp. I have no doubt Luke will be extremely powerful in TFA. It was also neat to see a tie-in with Smuggler's Run (Commander Beck was the antagonist in that story). The trees were definitely surprising but I think they will have more significance in TFA - especially after seeing Shara and Kes plant one in the soil on the jungly mountainous planet with temple ruins that I'm confident will be in the film as well. Great series. I hope we get a continuation.

First, I have to say that I love what the Story Group is doing in connecting the canon together: not only Smuggler's Run, but also The Clone Wars. The tree was growing on the Jedi training grounds. I remember it the most from episode Destiny in Yoda's vision when he sees all the Jedi, even the dead ones, gathered around it.

This is the tree (I can't find the one from the episode):

I loved, loved this issue. Luke has so much confidence and he is applying everything he learned. But, the kick was when he said to Shara: 'Search your feelings'. Seeing him kicking ass with the Force and with the lightsaber was such a thrill. The question is: How does he know about the tree? Holocrons? Or certain Force ghosts? :D

There were so many great panels in the comic, but I am sure Kyle will post them all. But, this is one of my favorites:

And, I am really happy that they haven't killed Shara and Kas, at least not in this comic. I hoped for a glimpse of kid Poe, but no such luck.

Great comic, but too short. I would like if the same team takes another comic after TFA because they would have more freedom and, if they could do these characters' justice in just 4 issues, imagine what they could do in the on-going series.

    They didn't die!!!
I'm pleased Poe's parents didn't die! However, this issue was a bit anticlimactic for the final issue off the series. All I can say is that this tree better have some pretty big significance.

All in all, I loved this story arc and I can't wait to see how it ties into TFA.

I definitely wouldn't be mad if they decided to continue the Shattered Empire series!

Great observation on the tree. I remembered it the instant you mentioned it. It's been a while since I had watched that arc of the clone wars. I think I'm going to watch it again soon. :)

in the trailer there is a shot of poe being tortured, folowed by a shot of trees being blown up.
what if that is him remembering his home being blown up.

I have to say this issue disappointed me a bit. It wasn't bad by any means, but it did't feel to me like the last issue of a series.

Things seemed to wrap up far too quickly at the end there and I didn't really have time to let in sink in before the comic was done.

Also, those trees came waaay outta left field. I'm guessing the one Shara has will play some role in TFA 'cause otherwise I don't see the point.

Overall though, Shattered Empire was a very good series with a kinda lacklustre conclusion in my opinion, still definitely worth a read for any Star Wars fans however.

Felt anticlimactic to me. I wonder if Luke is gonna use that Force-tree to start a new Jedi Temple

I really enjoyed this issue! Always nice to see Luke in action, additionally, I'm 99% certain that the planet on the last page is indeed Yavin IV, it has the giant temples and a gas giant in the sky, would be silly for it not to be Yavin IV. I think it is a way for them to acknowledge the past regarding the EU/Legends material. I highly doubt that there will be a Jedi Academy on Yavin IV in the new continuity(at least initially), so having them plant one of the Jedi trees on the planet is a nice way for them to acknowledge the past.

Clearly Luke needed the tree to bribe the Knights who say Ren.

Seriously, though. Some have speculated that Shara getting the tree is a subtle hint that Poe may be Force sensitive. Maybe Poe is being slightly downplayed as just a pilot but he will become a Jedi eventually.

I do find it odd that Luke would risk the lives of Shara and himself to get a tree.

I don't understand Star Wars anymore.... This isn't high-fantasy, like Middle Earth. There shouldn't be magic trees. I get Luke wanting it for ceremonial reasons to christen his new temple, but there has to be something more to the tree; otherwise, why would Sidious save part of it and put it in a lab?

Just look at it. The branches are emitting some kind of particles or radiation. Are they midichlorians? Does it strengthen force users? All of them? Or just light side users? Can it pollinate? Does it bear fruit? If Luke grew an orchard of force trees and ate their fruit would he become a god?

I love seeing Luke kick Imperial ass, but this issue is so stupid.

Maybe the tree is sort of a Light Side equivalent to the Dark Side Cave. Something strong in the Light that strengthens those near it. Though that begs the question why Sidious would keep it? Maybe he was experimenting on manipulating the Light Side through the tree?

Update, one of the trees being planted on Yavin IV was not an intentional nod to the EU, but still cool nonetheless.

Nice of Rucka to answer a fan's question :)

I think you are both on to something, the track which accompanies Luke's Dark Side cave scene on the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack is indeed called "The Magic Tree" . I always thought of it as a cave or tomb but apparently its a tree. So maybe Luke will use it to teach or perhaps he will plant it over some major dark side wellspring to contain the negative energy like the Jedi built the Coruscant Temple over an ancient Sith shrine?

Fun fact: The Sanskrit words sung in Duel of the Fates come from a medieval Welsh poem called Cad Goddeu or "The Battle of the Trees" as translated by Robert Graves. It is about a sorcerer who awakens trees to fight for him.
"Under the tongue root a fight most dread,
and another raging, behind, in the head."
The line apparently has something to do with fighting a large beast.

Another great review @Kyle. I totally dug the references to the Jedi Academy on Yavin, even if I didn't enjoy the series once Kyp Durron went ballistic. Plus, the tree from Yoda's dream and last episode of TCW was nice to see again, especially now that it's connected to Yavin. I felt Shara might have died, but I realize that in war, sometimes, people are just lucky to be alive, and we saw her and Kes almost die several time, and ultimately, survive. I wish we could have seen Poe, but I'll be more than fine seeing him TFA! On another note, Luke seems to really begin pushing himself after ROTJ, as his ability to turn his father back to the light seems to have not only pushed him to become a better Jedi, but to also have steel nerves and stay firm. His fight, his use of the force, was almost paralleled to some of the stuff I saw on TCW, when Anakin was steadily growing stronger and stronger in the Force as well. Overall, what the novel did was interesting and fun to read, and seeing how none of the media has touched much of the 30 years yet, I bet that rumor of another animated TV show after Rebels may be true :) (But after a few more seasons, please :D).
