More moderator policing in Prequel threads

I totally agree. You can't enter a prequel related post without getting a bunch of negative quotes which many times come from people who are not even participating in the conversation. Just yesterday I wrote to a moderator about this but I still haven't heard from him. I have seen fellow posters start a regular debate about the prequels and they are flamed in nasty ways. People here are sometimes extremely rude and when they are proven wrong they get real personal. This happens alot in the PT vs TFA threads. I am really starting to dislike this cause you can't say anything positive prequel related without some random paserby just looking at the post, not saying anything at all and then giving you negative quotes just because you say something positive about the PT that's better than the other movies.

 

Disagree is a neutral grade. I on the other hand got two "dislikes" and one "trolling" when I suggested Disney should erase PT from canon, but who cares? Whining over neutral grades though is just ... whining. In my humble opinion.

When I marked a mod's reply in said thread as "off topic" he/she removed the grade. But the reply was clearly off topic so I put another on him/her just now. Maybe I should be a mod.

There are three issues here that I see: negative posts, negative ratings, and differing opinions. And as a prequel fan myself, I'm sensitive to what @Ghost of Obi Wan Kenobi is talking about. However, I'm also aware that this street goes both ways and that no side can claim the high ground, so to speak. (See what I did there?)

I have some thoughts about this, but unfortunately it's super-late and I'm a bit too exhausted to respond to this appropriately. But what I will say is that whenever you see an instance of abuse, you should contact a moderator. We are few and threads are many. We are also not paid by the number of threads we monitor (or at all), and are very keen not to dictate what can or can not be discussed. So when we miss things, tell us; i.e. PM me or any of the others with a blue bar under their name (and even some with a yellow bar).

What I'll also say is that conversations here have largely remained civil throughout the history of the Cantina. If there is an uptick in argumentative and disruptive posting, then perhaps those of us who have been around longer haven't done a good job in setting a good example. Good discussion threads start with us as individuals, and we need to take responsibility for everything we put out there.

I wanted to post in order to let everyone know that we've seen this thread and this complaint. I'll try to respond in a more cogent manner tomorrow.

 

I left the TFN boards because the basher/gusher wars were getting too far. I've noticed that allot of ppl are appearing here form that dastardly board and I'm fearing that it might get heated in here as well but I think the way the Cantina is designed the trolls will jump ship.

 

I think the answer may be quite simple and devoid of drama. Stay tuned.

If I disagree instead of like something you post you will get a Dooku instead of the green rebel badge. Simple is that. You don't need to like it.

There is absolutely nothing on these boards that requires tighter moderation. The tone is overall fun and friendly, and with a few exceptions the mods do a good job.

 

I'm gonna skip the whole negative rating thing for awhile just to diffuse whats brewing here. If I disagree I'll just move along... don't want to be that person. walking on eggshells... LOL

 

Lady Musashi, I agree 1000% with that last post of yours. We're here to facilitate discussion, not to dictate how that discussion evolves.

And of course, that facilitation does involve mitigating situations where somebody feels it necessary to derail discussion with personal attacks, bigotry or blatant rating abuse. Remember folks, it's amazing easy to avoid getting into it with the mods hereabouts... don't act like a [VULGAR, UNCIVILIZED LANGUAGE DELETED.]

@Rogues1138 - I know exactly what you mean. I was a longtime poster on TF.N many years ago myself, and finally left for good after the mods went on a rampage and basically started trying to purge the JC Forums of prequel "bashers" (which they'd defined in such broad terms that it made it impossible to tell what was going to get you banned, unless you were an absolutely bug-eyed prequel "gusher".)

Suffice to say, we have tried our best to avoid that problem here in the Cantina. As you say, those who come here from the JC Forums and expect to find the same prequel-centric atmosphere are likely to be rather disappointed. As long as posters are civil to one another and not breaking the rather modest list of forum rules, that's all we ask.
