Need Clues? Focus On Luke and Anakin

    Okay, let's keep this spoiler-free. So if you respond to the thread, don't post secrets!

    If we want to get an idea as to the journey of Rey in TLJ, we need to look at the journey of our protagonist force-wielder in AOTC and Empire for clues. In both films, this character suffered significant trials and tragedies - or as Joseph Campbell would list it: The Ordeal benchmark of the Heroes Journey.

    In AOTC Anakin:
    • Chastised by Obi-Wan and Padme in public
    • Was initially snubbed by Padme
    • Kissed Padme only to once again be rejected
    • Lost his lightsaber twice - the second time lost it was destroyed.
    • Lost his mother because he was too late to save her
    • Went on a murderous rampage
    • Disobeyed his masters
    • Was arrested to be executed
    • Saw many of his Jedi compatriots fall dead
    • Lost his arm
    • Married Padme in secret, breaking the Jedi Code

    In Empire Luke:
    • Was mauled by a Wampa
    • Nearly froze to death
    • Was shot down
    • Fell from an AT-AT
    • Crash landed on Daogbah
    • Failed his test in The Cave
    • Failed his test when attempting to life his X-Wing
    • Disobeyed his masters
    • Got thoroughly whooped by Vader
    • Lost an arm
    • Found out the horrific truth of his father
    • Attempted to commit suicide
    • Nearly got his friends captured/killed while they saved him

    Needless to say, both characters suffered mightily in the middle chapter of each trilogy: Luke more physically than Anakin and Anakin more emotionally than Luke. Knowing that TFA inverted a number of the scenarios but kept the same themes from ANH, we can guess that TLJ will once again invert scenarios but keep the same themes. I suspect she will suffer physically and emotionally leaving us wondering about her fate heading into Episode IX.

    well the big thing she has in common with Anakin & Luke for film 2/3 is emotional family baggage.

    Anakin started AOTC with serious mum baggage that was always going to affect him as a training Jedi
    Luke had a bit of baggage at the start (he'd recently been told that his father had been murdered by Vader), and by the end his real father shouted "Who's your daddy? wrong, it's me!" and promptly cut his arm off.

    Rey was planning on going back to Jakku and putting more scratches on the wall of her AT-AT home, whilst waiting for 'whomever' to return. From the little we learnt about Rey in TFA... we do know that finding her family is foremost on her mind.

    as per Luke/Anakin she will have to face truths or loss about her family. Could turn her to the dark side type stuff.

    in answer to your question?

    I think Rey might suffer a bit physically, but i think she will take a huge emotional hit. Huge to the point where she walks away from becoming a Jedi at the end of TLJ and leaving us wonder how/if she will ever come back from it.

    Not sure I had a question, it was more of a discussion point. I agree on the family point. Anakin had mommy issues. Luke had daddy issues. Perhaps the truth of her family will be that emotional hit?

    As for the inversion of scenarios. Anakin saved Luke. Dark saved Light. What if Rey somehow has to save Dark? To somehow keep the balance of the Force, she has to keep the Dark to balance her Light?

    I hope Rey doesn't lose her arm in this one. That's kind of played out. Maybe a leg? (duel)

    As far as disobeying the masters, perhaps Rey and Luke will disobey the Force Ghost Jedi Council by finally getting him off that island!

    What if Rey's big emotional blow about her family is discovering that she does not actually have a family at all? She was created in a test tube!!!!
