'Star Wars: Thrawn' author Timothy Zahn hints at villain's future
    BY SEAN KEANE

The author admits that he's not sure what Lucasfilm has planned for the character beyond the fourth and final season of "Rebels" (set to air this fall), but he's pitched two sequel novels that would take place shortly after "Thrawn" to publisher Del Rey and has plans for more tales later on in the timeline — if the villain survives that long.

"I got a couple of story ideas that can be tailored to however they leave him," he says.

Zahn's other famous addition to the Legends continuity, Mara Jade, hasn't been brought back into canon yet. Since the one-time Emperor's Hand became Luke Skywalker's wife in that continuity, some fans would argue that she has too much baggage to return.

Despite this, her creator reckons there's still a chance.

"It's always feasible; there are always ways to do things. One of the things I noticed about 'The Force Awakens' is that the early crawl really glossed over quite a few years of the timeline, which tells me they may be thinking about bringing some of that in," says Zahn, highlighting the 30-year gap between "Return of the Jedi" and its 2015 sequel.

"What they have planned, I don't know. They may not know at this point. But they're keeping their options open, which is always good."

With Rebels Season 3 picking up soon after the novel and 4 closely behind that, it would seem odd to kill him off with the amount of setup he's gotten. Surely he has more importance to the story than being the nemesis of the Specters.

As to Mara Jade, her character was so heavily tied to Luke from her inception, it's hard to see her being imported. We'd end up with a character with the name, but only a superficial resemblance to the original.
