In just over two weeks, Star Wars fans across the globe will finally get to see Ewan McGregor reprise his role as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in his own limited series on Disney+. However, those hoping to see the character's return get nominated for Emmy Awards this fall may be disappointed to hear that the series won't be up for consideration just yet.

Variety reports that Obi-Wan Kenobi is ineligible for consideration for Emmy Awards for the 2021-2022 season because of its release schedule. Simply put, to be considered a series must have all of its episodes available for viewing by Television Academy members by May 31. Additionally, the public broadcast or posting of those episodes must occur on or before June 15. However, Disney almost certainly won't be willing to post the sixth and final episode early (the last two episodes are scheduled to release on June 15 and June 22 respectively), nor will they want to show them to TV Academy members weeks before their public premiere.

This news will understandably prove upsetting for some fans who were hoping that Ewan McGregor's return to his most famous role would get the same awards season recognition that The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars television series, has received over the last couple years. However, it's worth noting that we still don't know for sure if Obi-Wan Kenobi will be a one-and-done event as it has been advertised in its trailers or an ongoing series. Depending on which option Disney and the creative team have chosen for the show, it could eventually be up for either Outstanding Drama Series or Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, among other awards.

Either way, Star Wars TV may still have its opportunity to get some award season glory this year since The Book of Boba Fett meets the Television Academy's criteria for eligibility. Plus, as Variety notes in their report, other series like The Handmaid's Tale have earned Emmys even when they didn't have a complete season up for consideration. So Obi-Wan Kenobi may eventually have its chance to earn some trophies even if it's a little later than some fans may have hoped.
