We know for a fact things in a galaxy far, far away got pretty dark after Order 66 and until Luke Skywalker joined the Rebellion, but it appears the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series will paint an even bleaker picture than many fans anticipated. Or at least that's what screenwriter Joby Harold is teasing.

In one of the many interviews Entertainment Weekly has put out as part of the ongoing Obi-Wan Kenobi coverage, the series' head writer and executive producer had plenty to say about the state of the galaxy ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and where we'll find Obi-Wan, who is far from the person we met in A New Hope. In fact, it appears the show's main objective is to tell the story of how the fallen Jedi master regained hope.

Here's what Harold gave away as a general overview of the state of the galaxy:

This falls in line with what we saw in Solo: A Star Wars Story and the video game Jedi: Fallen Order -- the Empire didn't gain control of almost the entire galaxy overnight, and terror reigned over many worlds as the Imperial troops rooted out pockets of resistance. Something that Fallen Order directly dealt with was the Inquisitors and how they relentlessly hunted down the remaining Jedi across the galaxy. We know they play a huge role in the upcoming series, and Harold doubles down on that idea:

For Kenobi, it's also hard to deal with his own failures both as a teacher and as a friend, so he's facing some serious difficulties and pondering what his place in the galaxy is when the story kicks off.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of the interview comes at the very end, where Harold teases Obi-Wan's journey is inevitably tied to Anakin's and their past together, something the series will tackle head-on:

With each new bit of info, Obi-Wan Kenobi sounds more and more exciting and emotional. And it seems like this will be quite the ride for fans who enjoyed Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen's chemistry together, bringing back their shared story and fleshing out who they are during these difficult times before their final showdown aboard the Death Star.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will debut on Disney Plus with two episodes on May 27. Look forward to our extensive coverage of the series and reviews of each episode.

"The Empire is in the ascendancy." I wonder if we will see some planetary massacres/atrocities committed by Vader and their effects on Obi and his psyche.

Wish they had made more episodes. New short season leave me wanting.

A bleak tone is expected, but I wonder if the audience expects that tone as well?

I have forgotten the exact context for this, but... there was something (disucssed on the TRB channel on yt, I assume) about someone involved with LF somehow, mentioning that nobody has ruled out a second season should O-WK become a runaway success. So, there is hope for that. Although, the same person also indicated that there are currently no s2 plans and they couldn't quite see where such a show would go past the 6 episodes we're getting... But yeah, writers are wizards, so there is always hope :)

I expect it to be one and done. I would look forward to an additional season if it becomes extremely successful like Mando and Baby Yoda.

Hmmm. Hard to say especially without even having seen what's in store. It may generate some intriguing spinoffs though. I've heard some interesting Reva back story rumors.
I've heard Reva (That's right. The avatar is too dope:D) was once a jedi and was given a choice during the order 66 event by Vader to either join him and hunt down jedi or die. This could be a juicy spinoff series.

I actually prefer limited mini series with 5 - 8 episodes over drawn-out TV series. Those series feel much more focused.

To be honest -- and this is 100% me speculating -- I think it most likely that any follow-up of the O-WK show will be a limited Darth Vader series. That seems like such an easy win to do for LF; drama, tension, relevance, fan favorism... those things comes free with a Vader-focused tale.

Of course, there would have to be something else going on, too. You can't have Darth Vader be the protagonist for 3 hours. That doesn't work, storytelling-wise. Perhaps we could follow someone being hunted by Vader, or a reluctant ally of his, like Aphra or Qi'ra, or someone... a Watson to Vader's Sherlock.

Completely agree. I just had a conversation with someone yesterday and I really hope this is where they go. I go back to the ending of Rogue One and the excitement his scene generated, they would be stupid IMO not to do a series, especially with Hayden right there in the studios already.
