Steven Knight has taken up the sword of Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson on the new Star Wars movie, expected to release on December 19, 2025.

Recently, it was learned that there was some trouble in paradise with Lucasfilm. The project ran into a snag, with word indicating that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson exited the film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy after submitting a first draft in the middle of February, with indications from Lindelof suggesting that he chose to leave the project on his own terms as opposed to being fired. Obaid-Chinoy was reported as remaining on the project, while it was indicated that a new writer -- unidentified at the time -- would be working to build upon the first draft.

According to Variety, that unidentified writer turned out to be Steven Knight, the creator and chief writer of BBC sensation Peaky Blinders. Knight's body of work includes critically-acclaimed crime dramas like Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises, along with more character-focused films like Pawn Sacrifice and Spencer. In terms of franchise work, Knight's résumé is relatively light. He recently wrote an outline for a new Superman movie, though it was ultimately passed on in favor of writer-director James Gunn's Superman: Legacy, which will relaunch the DC Universe franchise on film, television, video games, and animation.

As it stands, it is believed that the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Steven Knight's Star Wars project will be the most likely project of those in development at Lucasfilm to hit the 2025 release date, although another project may take the slot as Lucasfilm charts a course for the future of their signature brand on the big screen. An official announcement of this film, possibly alongside others, are expected next month at Star Wars Celebration Europe, with speculation indicating that a title, brief synopsis, the writer and director will be formally revealed by Lucasfilm at some point during the fan convention.

The next Star Wars movies are scheduled for December 19, 2025, and December 17, 2027, although there are rumors that there may be a 2026 movie in development as well.

I'm encouraged by this news. I don't particularly care for Peaky Blinders. I think it's overly stylised at times and the actors virtually spread BBQ sauce on it and chew the entire set down. With sometimes entertaining but most often embarrassing results, in my opinion. But I really liked Locke. Which he wrote and directed. And the success of Peaky Blinders and how it attracts top acting talent bodes well.

And the recent adaptation he wrote of A Christmas Carol, starring Guy Pearce and Andy Serkis was fascinating. Has a bit of a partnership with Tom Hardy too so that might be a possibility for whatever this is. Or not.

I don't expect him to be to every Star Wars fan's taste though. That's for sure.

Donnie you are out of your element!

Ok, fair enough with your thoughts, but Peaky Blinders WAS very stylized. They started to temper it down a couple of seasons in, but it just didn't work the same.

The guy is talented, you are correct there, and he does have ties with loads of top-notch talent, so that could play well for the GFAA. I know Tom Hardy is highly desired by fans, and if I'm not mistaken, Cillian Murphy has talked about being a SW fan, so that would be cool.

Mostly, I think talent and vision transcends genre. This assumption or expectation that anyone coming into a SW project must have sci-fi/fantasy/superhero credentials is a fool's folly. Just look at the TV side, most notably, Tony Gilroy. Not even really a Star Wars fan, but with the right team and collaboration, great things were accomplished.

And we all know that Star Wars is at its best when the English, the Scots and the Irish are on the team.

And the Welsh too, I suppose. To give them the benefit of the doubt. Genuinely can't think of any Welsh talent in the GFFA off the top of my head. James Earl Jones?

I mentioned the other day that Top Gun: Maverick had about 10 different writers at various times. Iron Man had competing scrips with several different writers. I doubt we know for awhile, but it seems unlikely Knight is starting from scratch. Lucasfilm must have some kind of story idea and Knight is coming in to tune up what already exists.
