I think it's safe to say that last week's Rebels episode was probably one of the biggest "clunkers" for an episode of this series. I have to admit, I was quite intrigued as to how the show would bounce back on the next episode. Would it even? Do those little twerps from Iron Squadron make an appearance? Let's find out!

    3.png

    Spoilers below!!!!!!!!!!!

    What worked for me:

    - Hondo and Azmorigan as a team

    1.jpg

This will cause a lot of people to raise their collective eyebrows and that's fair to an extent. Azmorigan hasn't exactly been in the "best" Rebels episodes and he's obviously a device to add a lot of humor in the show. Same thing to an extent with Hondo, but Hondo has a lot more street cred due to his amazing episodes in The Clone Wars. These two ran into each other last season as enemies and now we see them as partners in this episode. The two of them just had me giggling throughout the episode at their interactions with each other, which made the episode really entertaining for me. Now, I think that a lot of fans will not be pleased by this very "slapstick" episode. It makes the point that it's aimed at younger viewers apparent, but...that's what it is supposed to be, right?

    - AP-5!!!!!

    2.jpg

AP-5 returns! Those will remember this droid last season when Chopper "recruited" him (long story). AP-5's dead pan English accent is hilarious and reminds me of the late Alan Rickman (RIP). I have no idea why AP-5 isn't in MORE episodes! His reaction to Kanan had me laughing out loud and left me wanting even more! Personally I would take him over Chopper any day of the week! Here is hoping we get more him coming up and...AN ACTION FIGURE!!!! ARE YOU LISTENING, HASBRO??!?!?!?

    - Sentry Droids

    8.jpg

If you are wondering if these droids look familiar, you would be correct. These droids come straight from the Dark Forces video game that came out in the mid 90's. For those who aren't familiar with that video game, Dark Forces was a first person shooter game. It's interesting that after the Clone Wars, the Empire still used some form of Battle Droids. I love the callbacks that this season of Rebels continues to give us.

    What didn't work for me:

    - Ezra and his teenager woes

    9.jpg

Ezra wasn't given command of the mission the crew went on, and that pissed him off. Why they ever gave field leader status to a teenager in the first place is another issue all together. Zeb is given the field leader honor and Ezra continues to do his own thing and ignore Zeb...it annoyed the sh*t out of me. Zeb is a seasoned warrior for God sakes!!!!!!! UUUUUGGGGHHHH. A good friend of mine had a good point regarding Ezra in this episode and the fact we are an older audience watching this show: "If teenage angst and stupidity were our favorite parts, that'd be weird." Well said.

    Quick hitters:

    - I love Hondo's paint job for his ship! <3
    7.jpg

I enjoyed this episode A LOT more than last week's "Iron Squadron". I would agree that this is one of those "filler" episodes, but it was an entertaining and fun adventure, at least! I'll take fun / slapstick over 80% of an episode taking place in a cockpit any day! Plus, anything with Hondo automatically gets a pass because I love that character. HA!

Something tells me that a lot of fans will be complaining about this episode though....We'll see!

I liked the episode overall, even though I was disappointed in getting another filler episode. Maybe the show should only have 13 episodes.

    Good:

    * Hondo. I love this character. He is so consistently wormy, but in a friendly appearing way.

    * dark troopers. I loved having them purposed as sentry droids.

    * the zeb and ezra banter. I liked how Ezra's hole in the door came back to bite him.

    bad:

*why wouldn't Sabine or Kanan help out? Hera's yelling for them to hurry up and board; wouldn't it speed things along to give Ezra a hand in rescuing his friends?

*I liked the dark troopers and the almost terminatoresque horror vibe that they had, but then they turned out to be too wimpy and not actually menacing at all.

    weird:

Ezra was all like "dont wait up for me" or maybe he said "i'll find my own way". I forget the words, but he is on cargo with Zeb less than a second later

My ear aren't that good so don't put too much stock in this, but weren't they Sentry droids? That seems to make a lot more sense to me.

They need to pace the release of episodes better. How can you have back to back filler episodes packed around hiatus weeks. It kind of makes me want to stop watching till the season is over and binge. You would think if they were going to do stories that didn't directly tie into the main characters story arc, they would at least be some Rouge One tie-ins. I could at least get excited about that.

If you look back on the season so far, most of the episodes that aren't about Maul or Thrawn and which are considered fillers have brought additions or allies to the Rebellion - Wedge Extraction, Imperial Commandos, Iron Squadron, even Last Battle, if the hint that Kalani might eventually change his mind about joining the Rebels pays off. In this one, the Rebellion got new weapons. So far, they are keeping one of the promises - that we will see the Rebellion grow. And it might continue next week with An Inside Man. I can see all these 'filler' strings coming together once the $hit hits the fan with Thrawn. Because, I have a feeling the Rebels would need every help they can get.

I always liked Hondo and how he tends to stick to one of the main characters. In The Clone Wars, it was Kenobi, this time it's Ezra. His 'blind' and 'see' puns with Kanan made me cackle. Still, it's impossible not to want to smack Ezra for trusting the smarmy Weequay. And for being a whiny teenager, lol. But, that's why we have Hera, no-nonsense space mom. :D

I like how they payed the homage to the fact that Zeb was originally the concept for the Wookies when he promised to start pulling the arms out. Or maybe I am reading too much into it as we Star Wars fans tend to do.

If this season excels in anything so far, it's visually. The ships, the droids, the action, it all looks great and much smoother than before. I am glad we get Kanan and Ezra episode next week. I miss Kanan.

lol I meant for the overall story of the show. The storylines should be more compelling even though they are also made for kids too.

I really enjoyed this episode, yet again Hondo's appearance made it funny with his deceptive renegotations against his business partners over treasure & proton bombs, I think after this Ezra will think long & hard before aiding him again. I hope they put those bombs to good use.

I'm forty-one, –but while watching 'Rebels', ...I'm nine.

I tend to agree and sympathize (empathize?) with those bemoaning the "filler" aspect of these episodes (I've grumbled too), but I'm still "getting to be nine" for 22 minutes, once a week. As things stand for now, that'll do.
This isn't to say there's nothing to gripe about-- it's surely been a weaker performance of late.

As others alluded to, I'd probably feel a bit more sneer-ish toward this episode if it weren't for the "cheerful-rascal" flair the Hondo character offers the show. He's a bloody treat.

As far as a main-storyline push goes, I think the strongest perspective gained in this particular episode is in the ongoing underlining of a link (bond?) between Hondo Ohnaka and Ezra Bridger... –I believe THAT connection is going to play a major role in Ezra's future.

I've done a little complaining about it, but I agree with you. As long as I am having fun each week, I'm happy. Maybe I don't get the big complaint about this season because season 2 was the exact same way. How many episodes played into the inquisitor/Vader/Ashoka stuff?

For me, it is more about pacing. I really want to see Thrawn do something. 9 eps in and he just shows up for 2 mins, lets the rebels go and says "i have a plan" over and over.

Another filler episode. I think its just cause of Rogue 1 coming out. right now we have 2 rebel cells who are fighting against the empire, SW:R and R1. Hopefully the story picks up after R1. The second season was good cause we had Vader and Kanan becoming a Jedi, Maul and Ahsoka. with Thrawn I dont think he's gonna play a big factor in Rebels. Either this season or next season will be his last. He wont have a big role in the series due to the fact that we have Kanan,Ezra, Maul and Vader here. I see Thrawn as Julius Ceasar type role like in Spartacus. Season 3 hasnt been up to par and random stories dont help.

I've been a star wars fan for over 40 plus years. I remember the dark times... so I'd be a hypocrite now if I complained. We have more SW then I could ever image. And some are complaining that were getting too much... oy vey.

i love hondo but how much time are they going to spend away from the huge story lines they set up? thrawn, maul, vader and ahoska are all hanging out there, as is the big picture stuff of the rebellion v empire. time to focus up, rebels.

Have you guys noticed a RO reference? Kanan asks something "(...), what chances do we have?". Hondo replies "(...) We are desperate! "

The episode was written by Gary Whitta, so it must be an easter egg.

Another filler episode, but at least this one was more enjoyable than what we got last week. As a longtime fan of the Dark Forces series, I was happy to see that they based the sentry droids on the Dark Troopers. Hondo is always an enjoyable character to watch as well.

That being said, they really need to stop with this filler stuff when they already have so many interesting plot points that they are currently juggling. Sure, they finally got the proton bombs that they needed, but something like that could have been accomplished in an episode that also moved along more interesting plot points at the same time. Honestly, they could have mentioned them getting the proton bombs at a different point off screen and no one would have been the wiser or cared for that matter.

Don't get me wrong, this episode was way better than last week's episode, but back to back filler episodes after a hiatus is an odd and frustrating choice. It looks like next week's episode will have them going back to Lothal though, so that one should be a little more meaty.

For those of you who are like "But the Sentry Droids are only based on the Dark Troopers, they're not the real thing!", rest easy - Commander made the Dark Troopers canon.
