Marvel's Star Wars #27 sees Imperial defectors Melton and Bev attempt to flee the second Death Star's construction site with their two kids -- they are desperate to reach the Rebel Alliance and give them information on the weapon in exchange for their safety.

Melton and Bev are likeable enough, and I certainly found myself rooting for them to escape the Empire unharmed, but it would be nice to get some of the bigger players involved in this story sooner rather than later. Thankfully, the issue's final panel teases that this will be the case next month.

Overall, issue #27 of Star Wars is a decent story but it's not the most memorable issue, even if they do their best to include an easter egg or two.

    Spoilers ahead...

The issue wastes no time getting into the action as Bev immediately puts her foot in it, claiming to the Imperials that Commander Sharin was sending her report to Coruscant, immediately alerting the Empire that they were not who they claimed they were. Melton and Bev are Crimson Dawn double-agents, but they've been called back by Qi'ra, and their escape came too hasty. They barely escape the Death Star and jump to a pre-programmed destination in the shuttle's navicomputer.

This leads them to the big easter egg of the issue, as they arrive at Al'Doleem and attempt to touch down at the Imperial Research Facility on Mount Pasvaal. For those who don't remember, Al'Doleem is where Vader fought the Jedi in hiding back in the 2017 Darth Vader comic series, and Luke visited there a while ago in the main Star Wars comic run too, looking for ancient Jedi relics.

They don't stay there long. It appears every Imperial facility in the area is on alert and looking for them. They jump once more, arriving in Coruscant. It's always good to return to Coruscant, so I'm glad we're getting another story there. They crash land in the underworld using the shuttle's escape pod, and we see them run from incoming Imperial forces once more.

It could have easily been frustrating to watch the Rebellion put them on hold while they escaped the Death Star, but thankfully this comic run has given the Rebels plenty of reasons to triple-check any information before acting on it. Considering Melton and Bev were using an old pre-Trawak encryption, it would raise up a red flag, and it did sound a little too good to be true.

It seems this is how the Rebels first learn of the second Death Star's existence ahead of Return of the Jedi, but of course there's no way they would know that. It makes sense that they would distrust this vague promise of information, even if you can't help but facepalm when Lando waves it off as a trap immediately. Even Hera writes it off in her briefing.

Thankfully though, one Rebel Alliance hero thinks otherwise and asks more information about the lead, claiming that he's 'got a good feeling' about it. Thank the Force for Luke Skywalker, huh?

I'm very excited to see Luke head to Coruscant to go on an undercover mission to rescue the family. It's been too long since his involvement in the titular Star Wars series, and I'm eager to see him back again. Of course, I much prefer it when Luke is seeking out ancient mysteries of the Force and Jedi history, but I'll take what I can get. Bring on issue #28.
