    Here we go again...

Hats off, applause, and much respect to series writer Jason Aaron for cramming everything one would want from a Star Wars story into one issue. The fact that he is accompanied by some of the best art in a SW book yet, via John Cassady, makes this the standout issue so far. Go down to your local comic book store, buy this issue, then come back here and read my review. Go now! It's that good.

Okay? You're back? If you did not listen to my advice, beware....spoilers ahead.

    Screenshot_4.jpg

The opening frames don't make me feel so bad for the Rebellion after their Hoth base is crushed by the Imperial AT-AT walkers. Once you witness all the firepower Darth Vader throws at just the ONE driven by Leia and Han, you see why the Rebels should have just packed up everything in their ice base and gone without attempting a ground fight. The arsenal is insanely fortified with almost everything you can think of Imperial ground assault, including some prequel trilogy-era vehicles that the Empire has apparently commandeered.

As Vader and his entourage of laser blasts continue their work, we are reunited with Chewbacca. When we last saw C-3PO and the Millenium Falcon, they were both undergoing something of a systematic dismantling. Not if Chewbacca and his crossbow have anything to say about it. And we see he also has another complicated task at hand, putting the groups getaway ship back together.

    Screenshot_8.jpg

When we last saw Luke he was on a speeder, kicking ass and taking names. That's pretty much what he's doing in this issue as well, only this time Vader wants to play. We are treated to a new type of speeder that is a hybrid between the traditional speeder and a TIE Fighter. If you guessed that it is Vader's ride, you guessed right.

Just as our heroes are about to escape, we learn the facility they intended to destroy in the first place is no longer on the brink of a meltdown. Luke decides to sacrifice himself, and against Leia's orders, enters the facility on his speeder, with Vader hot on his tail. Vader considers this a rematch from their last meeting in the trenches of the Death Star. It's badass, and if you did not heed my advice about reading the issue before this review, I'm going to save you from yourself and force you to read it if you want to know what happens.

    Screenshot_5.jpg

We see the angst Luke is living with in this book. All he knows about his father is that he was a great Jedi, so all Luke wants to be is a great Jedi. He can feel the power of the Force at his fingertips, but he cannot touch it, and Luke is terrified of failing to achieve his goals. It's a very human dilemma, and I was happy to hear Luke's turmoil conveyed so well. Off-topic, I'm reading Heir to the Jedi right now, which is entirely first-person narrative ala Luke, and I haven't encountered any chapters that conveyed what Jason Aaron did in a few sentences. Just splendid writing!

We also get inside Vader's head a little more. We hear him speaking to Obi-Wan, still haunted by his old master, and wondering if perhaps he was tricked into making the wrong move on the galactic chessboard by killing the Jedi Master.

    Screenshot_9.jpg

The cliffhanger is not anything I expected, but I will be thinking of it until I get my hands on #4.

Go! Your local comic shop is waiting for you! Go now! George Lucas would!

Action packed issue. I enjoyed it very much. The story is great, the art is great, the only thing that bothered me was some of the dialogue seemed kind of corny. Not sure why. I've enjoyed Aaron's other work and never felt it was an issue. It wasn't even all of it, just parts here and there. Maybe it was just the result of trying to squeeze so much into one issue. Regardless, another fine issue. And we get a cliffhanger. We've got a month to speculate, folks!

    Soooo....

    What's in the box?
Holocron? The Light Side for Dummies?
It's got to be something for Luke to progress in his training for the next 3 years. No mention of Yoda or Dagobah, though?

I never would have though of Vader speaking to Obi Wan. Adds a lot of depth. Hell, all three issues have for that matter. This whole cliffhanger none sense... Oh my god. Marvel just take it. Take my money.

Great comic... I like the struggle we are seeing in Luke... His doubt that even continues in ESB on dagobah...I believe we will see some training pieces or perhaps something completely different... How about a history of the Jedi? Or a call to any in hiding?

Great issue, though something seemed lacking to me. I think it was all the potatoes (action) with only small chunks of very tasty meat (characterization). Still, I'd chalk that up to my own expectations and hopes rather than any actual failing of the book.

That's a pic from the Morgan Freeman movie Seven about a serial killer who committed murders based on the seven deadly sins, I hope the holocron is not his wife's head.

Great Review @Kyle. I thoroughly enjoyed this issue. IMO it had everything I could want in a SW story. I just wish it was longer! It was really cool to see Luke in some vehicle action to further validate Biggs' claim of him being "the best bush pilot in the outer rim territories". We really only see Luke piloting in two battles in the OT...the Death Star, where he basically drove in a straight path along the trench to the target and on Hoth where he crashed and had to escape on foot. His command of the squadron in ESB and comments about his skills is really all we have to go on. It was just cool to see him do some crazy driving for once. I hope we will see more of that in the future, especially in his x-wing with Rogue Squadron or something.

I am also currently reading Heir to the Jedi. I'm about halfway through and it's been good so far. I'm curious about where all the new canon material from this period fits into the timeline chronologically. Obviously, Princess Leia #1 immediately follows ANH...sometime later Star Wars #1-3...Vader #1 & 2 clearly follow the events of Star Wars #3...but what about the Heir to the Jedi novel? I really don't know. My gut says it takes place after the current comics in the timeline. For instance, in the book, Luke moves an object with the Force for the first time. In Star Wars #2 he seems genuinely surprised that what Vader did by force-pulling the lightsaber from his hand was even possible. But in Heir to the Jedi, Luke also seems to theorize that it "should" be possible to move objects...why does he theorize if he has already witnessed Vader do that very thing? Anyway, the comics seem to immediately follow ANH so I feel that HTTJ takes place further down the road. Anyway, I foresee a huge amount of content coming for this time period. I mean, the Clone Wars TV show has 6 seasons which span a total of 3 years on the SW timeline. The same amount of time passes between ANH and ESB so these comics and novels could keep coming for some time. I say bring it!

As for Kenobi's mystery box...I think it would be neat if they throw back to Shadows of the Empire and have the box contain instructions on how to construct a lightsaber. However, once again in Heir to the Jedi, Luke has no clue how they even work, but eventually discovers that the complexity of the construction would require using the force to align the crystals properly, so I don't think it'd be that. One route they could go is a Jedi Holocron made by Obi-Wan himself with further instruction and training for Luke. After all Vader does say in ESB "Obi-Wan has taught you well..." Really? He spent like 2 days with the guy and then he died. I think more training is required (of course Vader probably didn't know how little time they actually had together). In the Heir to the Jedi novel, Luke states that he hasn't heard Obi-Wan's voice since the Death Star and it's clear he hasn't received any additional training. Who knows though? Maybe these stories will eventually overlap in the timeline a little bit. What I really think would be cool is if that is the last we see of the box...until episode VII comes out. Think about it...readers of the comic will be looking to discover what's in the box from now until December when TFA comes out and our new heroes discover it at Kenobi's place and set out to find out who this "Luke" is. It becomes the macguffen that propels the story...just a thought.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the review.

Yes, the more I read Heir to the Jedi, the more choppy it becomes. Still a decent yarn, though. In all fairness, Luke never saw Vader move anything. He only saw Vader strike down Kenobi. Heir to the Jedi takes place before this comic series. I'm hoping the Story Group provides some sort of new timeline so we can avoid confusion.

It would be cool if that "mystery box" made it all the way to TFA. I think we will find out what it is in the next issue, but nothing surprises me anymore and it could very well be a MacGuffin for something bigger

I agree. We will likely get the box pay off in the comic series...but it was mentioned that the upcoming material will contain easter eggs for the film (can't back that up with a reference - but I know I read it in an article recently). But it's possible. It would be a cool way to reward comic readers yet it would not be necessary that film only patrons have read the comics to understand it.

The final pages are so intense, well written and coherent with the overall storyline. Darth Vader's obsession for Luke in ESB is so much clearer this way. And the mystery box was such an awesome conclusion. I can't wait for Star Wars #4!!!

... and thinking about the mystery box again... I think there are instruction to find a kyber crystal maybe on Lothal or the ice planet Ilum. Luke has to find a crystal like every other Jedi, as we know from TCW and Rebels.

Now I really need to buy the comics! I like reading these reviews cause of the new facts on Star Wars I learn, but Obi-Wan talking to Vader?! This made my day. I always felt Obi-Wan, especially after ANH, would try to soften up or at least force Vader to realize his statement of being more powerful than ever before to VADER, not just to guide Luke, would have a real effect! This is the guy who beat the Chosen One and cut him up to be burned, and to now make him be psychologically troubled? Awesome. And now I know he converses to Vader, and as a ghost is a great reminder of the past life. Thank you Marvel for making my childhood thought reality!

I had read somewhere that Heir to the Jedi takes place before the comics. It woukd be strange if he could use the Force telekinetically in the book and then be surprised by Vader's usage in SW #1. Are we seeing the first contradictions of the canon? I've got faith in the Storygroup to avoid such things.

You basically said most of what I came here to say! I reckon the box contains instructions regarding lightsaber construction. The deleted scene from the start of ROTJ showed Luke finishing his lightsaber on Tatooine (I think it was implied to be Kenobi's bachelor pad too) and even back then I think it was believed to be with the help of Kenobi's notes or something? So this could be along the same lines as that, which I'm happy about, as I always liked that idea.

I finished HTTJ earlier this week and likewise picked up on that contradiction. Whichever came first, it creates some form of inconsistency, although as everyone said above, I think HTTJ takes place between Leia and StarWars/Vader. That said, the prequels raised a fair few inconsistencies in places and many of them have been tackled by regarding the subtext a bit more and speculating beyond the text/screen, so I don't think we've seen any major blunders (yet)!

Although it's not from the story group, I refer to this for timeline stuff:

Obi-Wan doesn't talk to Vader in the comic (at least not yet). And Vader doesn't really talk to Obi-Wan exactly. He wonders out loud about Obi-Wan's training of Luke and he does so by pretending to speak to Obi-Wan. I would assume Vader still thinks Obi-Wan is dead and has become one with the force. He gives no indications that he is aware of his continued existense with his retained identity in the force as a spirit.

It's kind of like going through some old belongings of your hypothetical friend (let's call him Joe) who passed away several years ago and you find a picture of Joe with his girlfriend and then a picture of another girlfriend from the same time you didn't even know existed. You say, "Joe, you old smoothy...(smile)"...You know Joe is dead, but as a coping mechanism, you find yourself carrying on in one-sided conversations with him about various things as he comes to mind. This is kind of like what I think Vader is doing.
