Well, the only thing that can disappoint about an ongoing series in any medium of storytelling is the lillypad aspect some parts of a larger story must have. Darth Vader #2 is a good example of this. If you pick up this issue do not expect that you will be moved much further ahead in the arc than where you began. It's not a bad issue, mind you, just a lillypad, and it is well worth the cover price to stay current in the new stratosphere of Star Wars stories.

Let's start with the good. The art, by Salvador Larroca, is as beautiful as anything out there. Considering none of the scenes take place on any planet, Larroca shines as he makes the most of the mostly claustrophobic story.

The opening scene also gets this eventually dull issue off to a good start. We see Vader still doesn't mind getting his hands dirty when it comes to flying TIE Fighters, as he leads a rescue operation in the opening frames.

The power play dynamic between Tagge, Grand General Tagge that is, and Vader is interesting but not nearly as intriguing as what we saw in the last issue. As we all know Vader, I'm pretty sure he is playing political chess and Tagge will be gasping for air under a Force-grip at some point in the near future.

It was also nice to see a cameo by some of our old, mechanical adversaries from the prequel trilogy. I'll let you find them for yourselves.

I have a lot of faith in Kieron Gillen, so despite the lackluster tone of this second issue I still think we have much to look forward to as the series continues. There are many loose ends from the first issue that need to be tied up. Who was the cyborg looking fellow hanging out with Palpatine? What exactly is Vader contracting Boba Fett for? The seeds for Vader's obsession with Luke will no doubt start to sprout in later issues, so we have a lot of his search for Skywalker to witness.

Again, don't rush down to your local comic store today to buy it, but let it find it's way into your collection before the next issue comes out on March 25. This issue came out only two weeks after #1 hit the press, so maybe the quietness was due to that. Once again, the fantastic art and keeping abreast with the new canon make it worth your while. There is nothing terrible about this issue, so don't let me rain down on your Star Wars comic parade.

Just finished it. Pretty much have to agree with everything you said. It's cool seeing Vader developed as a weaker character than we're used to seeing on screen. It adds more depth. I look forward to seeing the transition to the "ESB" Vader.

Agree with your review. But still enjoying it overall. Would be good if we see vader having the same visions of his future as Anakin did. And he could see that luke would End up turning him. And then see further then that to hint at what happens to luke in the force awakens!

I thought it was solid. I loved seeing Vader dressed down last issue, and now we get to see the obstacles he'll have to maneuver to go about his own agenda. These aren't mere nuisances he has to deal with either. Being assigned what is basically a spy shows he has to conceal his doings from Emperor, Tagge, and god knows who else. Then we had the pirates allude to Aphra being involved in what they're a part of. Add a little bit of action, Vader eliminating one obstacle and covering his tracks in one move...I'd say it moved the story along rather well.

Me too. The first issue was so good that this one was bound to feel like it was turned down a notch. I'll take Vader at a slow burn any day.

I enjoyed the issue. It was well worth the $3.74 I paid for it (which also came with the digital issue on the Marvel app). I agree with the lilly pad analogy. I get these issues (along with Star Wars) as soon as they come out to get my fix, but I think the best way to enjoy this series will be when it is later collected in a larger volume. This was a filler episode. I suffer the same dilemma with The Walking Dead. I caught up in that series with the two Compendiums which are about 1000 pages each and then the smaller volumes after those. I am now caught up to where I am reading each issue as they are released and the brevity of each issue is agonizing. Still, lovin' me some Vader though. :)

On the first read, "fun, but filler" popped into my head. However, after reading the comments here (which I agree with), I decided a second read would be both entertaining and worthwhile.

Certainly this issue isn't as jam-packed as the last one was with cameos (Sidious, Jabba, Boba) or intrigue (Palpy's mysterious meeting with Rodian cyborg). But I still think that it had plenty to be excited about.

The artwork was phenomenal, in my mind. I loved the battle droid throwback and really enjoyed Vader's usage of the Force in altering the missiles' trajectory.

We knew that Anakin was already thinking of betraying Palpy in ROTS for his family. It's fun to see this idea building steam and taking shape.

It was interesting to see Tagge's differing thoughts from Tarkin on what qualifies as true military might. I agree that Tagge will eventually be on the receiving end of a Force choke death. Perhaps he is the first "public" example Vader will make of this practice.

Like our "Rebels" from the cartoon, the fact alone that they don't appear on screen in the OT, doesn't mean they didn't play a part during the timeline. It is after all, supposed to be a large galaxy.

However, his current position, would probably have placed Tagge at the Battle of Endor and we know that Piett controls the Imperial forces there.

The Emperor has no choice but to overlook Vader's failures, I think Tagge wouldn't receive the same benefit of the doubt. Sith apprentices seem much less replaceable.

Here's another interview with Kieron Gillen.
    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/70418

A bit about Aphra: "I start bringing some droids in and a character called Aphra, who is a kind of Indiana Jones character, in that she travels the galaxy looking for ancient artifacts and making sure they get into the wrong hands. She’s fun, roguish and adventurous. There’s a protocol droid called Triple Zero who specializes in torture, he’s a lot of fun and there’s a kind of astro-mech droid too."

I was inspired by how much I am loving the Darth Vader comics after the latest issue so I have done an audio comic book for Darth Vader #2. I will also do #3 shortly. Hope you enjoy!
