Well, now we at least have some idea of what the hell Darth Vader is up to.

But first, let's talk about our new friend Doctor Aphra. Yes, she is the covergirl on the front of this issue, unless you purchased a variant. You might also notice a couple of droids that bear resemblance to a couple other droids we know. Make no mistake, these are nothing like the droids you are thinking of. As far as our introduction to Doctor Aphra, we meet her in the opening pages of this issue, in the midst of a Mission: Impossible-esque break in. Dodging laser beams, crawling past security sensors, and running from explosions. We are not really sure what exactly she is trying to get until she gets to the prize.

    Screenshot_2.jpg

Turns out Doctor Aphra is some sort of computer scientist and what she is after is a hard drive containing a deadly program that she can input into a protocol droid. The program is not just deadly, it is very advanced, and also hard to access, even for her. One wrong step in the programming process and the droid will turn on her. These droids are precarious to get up and running, and it is a very risky task.

Doctor Aphra gets what she came for, but her exit strategy hits a few bumps. Luckily, for her, as strange as it sounds, Darth Vader has a need for her services. He shows up and smooths things over with her would-be captors, the best way Darth Vader knows how to smooth things over.

    Screenshot_3.jpg

What would Vader need with a sycophantic computer scientist? For a few pages there Doctor Aphra will not shut up about her admiration for the dark lord. Vader gives it up that he has lost any sway he had over Imperial affairs and it is time for him to build his own army. His own droid army. If you are going to build a droid army, or a Death Star, there is only one planet you do it on. I won't say, but you should be able to make an educated guess, and it won't be the first time Darth Vader has been there.

I am very pleased the story is pushing forward. This is a much better issue than the last. The art by Salvador Larroca is on point and it feels like he really had fun with this issue. It's great to see the retrospective places they take Vader in all three issues so far. We are seeing a very vulnerable Darth Vader, even if he can wipe a room full of battle droids clean. I feel like there are little glimpses of Anakin, especially when he ponders certain questions that involve that part of his life.

    Screenshot_4.jpg

This issue is not crucial to run out and buy, but you are going to want to get around to it eventually if you want to finish the series. Nothing mind blowing here, but it is a more intriguing piece of the arc than the last issue. If you feel like holding off until right before #4 comes out don't feel bad because I have the feeling #3 and #4 go hand in hand.

You can get your hands on Star Wars: Darth Vader #4 available April 8.

I enjoyed this issue...Dr. Aphra has a female Indiana Jones vibe going...albeit a little more chatty. If you think about it...aside from minor characters, Aphra is only the second major (I hope she's major anyway) character in the new comic continuity. First we have Evaan in Leia and now Aphra. Interesting that both of the new characters are women. I think Aphra, if she persists in this comic will give us the lighthearted banter that has been missing so far. I mean...Vader is about as serious and morose as you can get. For an ongoing series this is a good commercial move (even though I personally would read 100's of issues that just feature Vader alone - but that's just me). I think #4 definitely will continue the arc began in this issue...the cover is pretty telling...and awesome-looking I might add. :)

I agree. Marvel is killing it and giving us great characters, especially when it comes to new female leads they introduce.

Anybody know what the heck kind of alien this Utani Xane guy is? My first thought was an uncloaked Jawa with a name like Utani (evokes instant urge to shout "Utini!" for me), but the lack of glowing eyes makes me think that this is an all-new species. I don't recall coming across this one before, but I could be wrong.

Thank you for not making me be the first one to say it. I know it's a comic ... but (whistles) sexy noetheless. How can you not like a sexy artifact-hunting woman with a blaster on her hip. Is she the SW version of Lara Croft, like Ezra is the SW Aladdin?

With that in mind, we will almost certainly not see a live-action Aphra (I doubt the Star Wars live-action series would feature her) ... whicj actress do you think would make a good Aphra?

This issue definitely flowed better than the last issue. Same goes for the Leia series. They just keep getting better.

Not a lot of dialogue for the first part, then Aphra talking non stop. I don't know why I liked it so much, but I did. Plus, an assassin protocol droid. This is by far the most fun book out of the new Marvel titles.

***Also, if your store ran out, apparently more first print regular cover issues are shipping for next Wednesday. So don't pay out the wazzoo on ebay. Your local LCS's should have more at cover price next Wednesday.

It was definitely classic adventure, which is always a good thing for Star Wars.

Vader did seem to show a bit more (albeit subtly) his vulnerable side. I got the feeling that Anakin is still in there to a degree. It was a good balance of Anakin and Vader.

Aphra does seem happy-go-lucky psychotic. Her "crush" on Vader almost comes across as a bit of comic relief, considering that Vader seems in no way capable of ever having any kind of romantic feelings again. What do you make of those circuit-type things on her arm? What do you think the function is?

Putting Spoiler on my opinion of this one just to be overly careful. A bit slow at the start, but:

I love this one because anything connecting the prequels with the originals is really interesting. I just knew those Droidekas weren't in the previous number just to quickly get destroyed! And Vader going for a droid army of his own is just too cool to Believe.

Can't wait for the next one!

Ah...I should have looked up the location mentioned at the beginning of the comic. It plainly states that Aphra was on Kallidahin in the caption. Thanks for the post. :)

Agreed ... trumps the Jan Ors idea for a live-action Aphra!

I noticed on the main site thread that links to this review someone asked why Marvel made Aphra so sexy looking. I mean if they are going for a strong female role, why degrade her by making her sexy right? I have to disagree on this point. All throughout history women have used that appeal to their advantage. Have they been degraded in the past? Certainly. I am not advocating the degredation of women, rather I am encouraging those who ask this question to embrace gender equality while also embracing gender differences. In other words, let little girls have their tea parties and care for their baby dolls...let little boys hit each other with their plastic swords. Let women be women and men be men. Is it necessary for us to abandon all sterotypes in the name of equality? Absolutely not. Men should usie their physical, emotional and mental strengths to their advantage, and women should use theirs as well.

There is a reason that all the male superheroes of the Avengers are bulky atheletic types (with the exception of Iron Man who relies on his technical savvy and qwerky personality) and a reason that Black Widow is just as sexy as she is lethal. This is what most viewers want to see. Granted, a large number of the people who will be in the theater watching the Avengers will be slightly overweight and flabby. But is this what we want to see in our heroes on screen so we can better identify with them? No it is not. We identify with them on much deeper levels than their superficial good looks. Yet we appreciate that they exemplify everything we are not yet hope to be.

Do I have a problem with Aphra being portrayed as having what most modern societies would call an ideal figure? That is a definite no. On the other hand, I do appreciate the tastefulness with which she is presented. Strong in her femininity yet not showing everything she's got. She shows almost no skin throughout the issue which is an improvement on Marvel's usual practice. The majority of their female characters in comics within the last decade or two have been very revealing and left little to the imagination. I appreciate the reserve with the Star Wars comics...accenting the characters feminine qualities while remaining tasteful. They have succeeded so far in this capacity with Leia and now look to do so with Dr. Aphra.
