Let's get this out of the way before I start gushing. I loved this issue. I mentioned in the last review that between A New Dawn and Rebels, I'm not a huge Kanan fan. This series could very well change my mind.

The last issue left off with a pretty big cliffhanger. The Emperor just issued Order 66 and the Clones were getting their blasters ready. We pick right up where we left off with Kanan relaxing after a hard days work. Suddenly, his mind is filled with visions of the Jedi being slaughtered across the galaxy.

    Screenshot_4.png

He and his master, Depa Billaba, are forced to defend themselves. Kanan suffers a dilemma which I imagine many Padawans felt...to kill their only friends in self-defense. The Clones are the closest thing to family he's ever had and it is gut wrenching for him to take them out. His master issues her final lesson to him, and if you've seen Rebels, you know what it is.

    Run!

    Screenshot_5.png

Once Kanan is alone, he realizes the righteous lessons taught by the Jedi are pretty much useless for a boy stranded on a hostile world with a platoon of Clone Troopers hunting him down. Kanan had his master to guide him along the way, now he's out in the wilderness, and it is very cold. This is a dark, depressing underlining to the character's past I don't think could ever be covered in Rebels with such harsh images. No one wants to see their hero digging through a trash bin to keep from starving, and this is just one of the unsettling images of a boy alone in the galaxy turned against him.

    Screenshot_6.png

A shady alien named Kasmir takes pity on Kanan and takes him in, temporarily. He reinforces that the galaxy is not a forgiving place, no matter what the Jedi have told him. You need to be a cutthroat scoundrel to survive. So, Kanan takes that advice, stealing Kasmir's ship (I bet you will recognize it) and heading for Coruscant.

    Screenshot_7.png

Despite receiving Obi-Wan's message, Kanan is determined to find the rest of the Jedi, no matter what faces him upon his arrival to Coruscant.

The writing by Greg Weisman is great. This issue could have been very melodramatic, but it was understated and heartbreaking. Pepe Larraz compliments the tone of the story with the emotional roller coaster of reactions from Kanan's hopes and hopelessness. This was a difficult tale to tell, but the team pulled it off marvelously.

Get to your local comic store now and pick it up!

Great issue! And yet another cliffhanger... I like how Kanan, after getting over the initial shock did not just tuck tail and run. He ran eventually, but not before taking a few clones out. And it wasn't like there were only three Clones attacking them - more like 50. His situation was hopeless (remembering back to the death of the padawan on the landing platform at the Jedi Temple in ROTS). He's just a scared kid with nowhere to run and no one to trust without the street smarts he needs to prevail. It will be interesting to see him grow over the course of this series. And @Kyle, enlighten me on the ship. I don't recall seeing this one before.

Wow, just wow. I absolutely loved that issue. Kanan is my favourite comic series now and I actually really like him in Rebels because of it! Ok I will stop gushing. No I won’t, it was epic. I’ve already finished recording the audio comic book.

Pics are up. Thanks Kyle for yet another great review.

I agree with the other guys. I loved that issue. Actually I think the Kanan series is indeed the best one from the new comics, mainly because it is original. I think I had enough of Han Solo, Luke and Vader. I wanted something fresh. That's why I liked Princess Liea too. It explored a character that was very briefly touched in the movies. But the art of Princess Leia was a huge let down for me. On the other hand Kanan looks really great. I recommend it.

Also now is the time to point out that we're not affiliated with any comic book companies, we do these reviews just for the fans. I am doing this clarification because I saw some comments on the blog that we're affiliated with Marvel or Comixology. That's not true. Just have fun guys. :)

Thank you for clarifying and the pics.

Yes, no freebies or endorsements here. I download and/or purchase these on my own and am not in the pockets of Marvel or Comixology by any stretch.

I’ve uploaded the audio comic book now. Hope you guys like it! Also, I forgot to mention the art in my previous post, it is beautiful (am I the only one that says B-E-A-U-TIFUL in my head every time I write that after seeing Bruce Almighty? :D)!!!

FYI Comic Book Fans: Marvel Unlimited is having a promo (I think it's still going on) for 1 month free of their service with promo code "ultron". Today they almost doubled their Star Wars Legends comic library. They have basically taken the old Dark Horse comics and put their name on them and labeled them legends. I have been wanting to catch up on the Legends comics as there are many more series that I wanted to read, but I don't want to throw my money at stories that (even though most are good in their own right) are not canon. Even after a month free, $9.99 per month is not bad for all the contect they have on there and you can still cancel before they charge you. I'm a Star Wars comic reading machine at the moment. And not to mention all the other Marvel content they have that's not SW related.

Yeah it is. The phone app is buggy and quite awful actually which sucks. But the tablet version runs great on my Samsung Tab 4 & the website version runs well on pc.

    Hey guys,
Just a warning and probably something you should know. The NEW Star Wars comics are not featured on the Marvel Unlimited App, unless I am missing something. If you are a Marvel fan or are interested in the Legends Star Wars comics, this is a great deal. If you are hoping to find any of the comics in the new canon, stick to your local comic shop or other online purveyors.

And once again, JUST TO CLARIFY, I am not sponsored by Marvel or any other comic book publisher or online purveyor. Just a fan writing reviews. Think of these reviews as a jumping off point to discussion, hence them being posted on the Cantina rather than a stand-alone blog post. Just wanted to make sure no one got the wrong idea about me touting the Marvel Unlimited App. I entered my credit card into their system, just like anyone else would. Only passing along information.

Yeah, I mentioned in my post that I was using this service to read the Legends material, but I should have mentioned that the Legends stuff is ALL that is currently available through the unlimited app. They have the original Marvel comics from back in the day and most of the Dark Horse comics (now branded under the Marvel name). While I know the new stuff will eventually make its way to this service, it would still be cool if it was on there. I guess they want to make those individual comic sales for a while before uploading it into their unltd library. But I buy the physical copies of the new canon comics anyway which come with a code for a free digital copy through Marvel's other app. They basically have one app for you to read your own personal collection that includes codes you obtain with physical copies and/or direct in-app purchases - and another app for the Unlimited service which has the same content readily available to all subscribers (about 15,000 + comics). I wish it was all merged into one app, but as of now it's separate. However, you can access the content from both apps on marvel.com as well, so I guess if you're at your computer it's all in one location. But I digress.

Um... I don't. It's not the same as the leaked concept art, is it? Doesn't match up when you consider the details... Unless I'm wrong of course! star_wars_04.jpg

The Ghost was Hera's ship, Kanan didn't get introduced to it until the end of A New Dawn.

Yeah; I didn't recognize Kasmir's ship either. It's neat looking, but hasn't been represented in any canon material until now at least. Is it from the EU/Legends material?

I love all of the new SW comics, but Kanan's is fresh and delves further into a great, newer character's past.

I will disagree about the art in the PL comic, but I've been a fan of Dodson's since Harley Quinn's debut series.
