Both the Sequel Trilogy and Dragon Ball GT share common features:

    1) Both sought to capture the spirit of the original inspirations:

    DBGT
    • Goku is essentially made into young Goku
    • Pan is basically a substitute for Chi Chi/Bulma
    • Familiar characters such as Cell, Androids 17 + 18, Freeza, Uub are present
    • Theme of first part is arbitrary fetch quest of Dragon Balls
    Sequel Trilogy
    • Rey is female substitute for Luke
    • Poe is essentially Wedge Antilles meets Han Solo
    • Snoke is an analogue of Palpatine
    • Kylo Ren's origins are close to Vader's
    • The plot of parts 1 and 2 are essentially reiterations of the original series
    2) Both deal with legacy and consequentialism:

    DBGT
    • The Tuffle parasite Baby seeks revenge on the Saiyans for what they did to his people
    • The Shadow Dragons are accumulated negative energy from over usage of the Dragon Balls
    Sequel Trilogy
    • In TLJ, there are references to the hubris of the Jedi in the form of Luke's lectures
    • The revelation that Palpatine is Rey's grandfather
    • The fact that Kylo Ren feels obligated to carry out what he believes to be the wishes of his deceased grandfather
    3) There is the theme of resurrection

    DBGT
    • In the Super 17 Saga, many of the defeated villains are resurrected by virtue of a portal leading from the underworld to earth: Nappa, Zarbon, Dodoria, Recoome, Guldo, King Cold, Jeice, Babidi, Pui Pui, Yakon, Cui, Android 19, Appule, Cooler, Raditz, Major Metallitron, General Rilldo, Staff Officer Black, General Blue, Captain Yellow, Saibamen and many others
    • Referenced in the Shadow Dragons saga where at least one of the Shadow Dragons was created as a result of Goku's decision to resurrect characters
    Sequel Trilogy
    • The resurrection of Palpatine (though there is no previous precedent for this in current canon)

Also, both tried to explore different ideas while trying to stay true to the original but ultimately ended up alienating fans.

To any Dragon Ball fan out there. Dragon Ball GT is best Dragon Ball.

    I never watched DB GT.

The first Dragon Ball with Goku as a child is my favorite because of the humor and that sense of adventure.

Drangol Ball Z I gave up shortly after the end of Cell fase because it started to get too repetitive (my favorite fase was Freeza).

It is nice that you've found too many similarities between the ST and GT.

This would explain why I think the ST is a mess. But you're right there are similarities. The reason for this is mainy laziness, lack of orginality and planing. Same as GT, the ST is a symbol of missed opportunities.

As someone who watched DB, DBZ, GT, Super and even read some Mangas, I heavily have to disagree.

GT has great ideas, but terrible executions. The individual arcs are meh in the most parts.

    1) Saga One: Black Star Dragon Balls Saga
Half of the episodes of this saga is pure filler and not needed for the plot. The whole plot line for this arc lacked direction. Sounds familiar, right?

    2) Saga Two: The Baby Saga
This is actually the only good arc of GT. We get a good set up in the first half of the arc (we know who the main character is, what the goal of this arc is, etc.), a good villain and a great new transformation.

    3) Saga Three: Super Android 17 Saga

Thank god this arc is really short. This saga is pure conveniences and nostalgia.

    4) Saga Four: Shadow Dragon Saga
This saga feels mixed. There are many ups, but also alot of downs. The setup/premise is awesome, but the first part of this arc (fighting the dragons) lacks motivation, thus it's really boring.

The best things about GT are:
    - Super Saiyan 4
    - Baby Vegeta
    - the ending (where men cry xD)

GT is rightfully non canon and DB Super is a much better continuation of Z. But same as GT it suffers from nostalgia, bad pacing and convenient storytelling. These are issues which seem to trouble a lot of franchises these days.

    Dragonball Z is the best.

Sorry for getting off topic here. I simply love Dragonball.

"Dragon Ball Z is the best"... Does that extend to the Majin Buu Arc because there are some things I could criticise there:
    • Pacing
    • The fact that there were many iterations of Buu but there was not enough time devoted to explore what separates each iteration from a character perspective
    • Gotenks
To me, the last arc just felt rushed. Having said this, I did like the Cell/Android saga. I do kind of prefer Hunter x Hunter though to be quite honest.

Yes, the 'Buu Saga' is the worst of all four sagas. But it has a huge redeeming value- Vegeta's character arc. Vegeta is arguably the best written character in DBZ and his character really pays of in the Buu saga.

I agree. That arc was rushed. My favorite arc is the Android/Cell saga. From the appearance of Future Trunks to the death of Cell- pure epicness.

Despite all of that, Goku showing Buu all of the Super Saiyan forms going into the 3rd form was pretty epic though

I never was a huge fan of Super Saiyan 3. Actually I only like Kaioken, Super Saiyan 1 and Super Saiyan God. Everything else was unnecessary.

Another similarity is that the creators of the franchises did not work on GT and the ST

Good observation. Also, there were 2 writers/directors involved in each: Dragon Ball GT (Aya Matsui 1-50, Atsushi Maekawa 51-60), ST (self explanatory). I am sure Akira Toriyama was there to submit ideas and art but his approach was hands off.

Then there is Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Dragon Ball Heroes (loved the anime) which had less involvement from Akira.
