In The Force Awakens we saw Luke put his right hand, with glove, on R2-D2 while looking at the ruins of his training facility burn. We then see Luke at the end of the movie on Ach-To with no glove and see that the skin covering his artificial hand is no longer there.

In The Last Jedi we see, by way of flashbacks, that Luke didn't have the skin on the artificial hand when he contemplated killing Ben Solo back at his school. So Luke didn't maintain the hand even while not in exile. We see Luke wearing the glove on Ach-To throughout most of his screen time in TLJ.

I'm wondering, is there any significance to any of this? I had originally thought that Luke had let the skin covering go while on Ach-To, but that's clearly not the case. He wore the glove while appearing to those on Crait, although I can't see the significance of that. Any thoughts?

Luke started to lose the skin of his fake hand during the events of ROTJ.

He just didn't care to get it fixed, so he wore a glove to cover the losing of the skin.

I think that's likely, I'm just wondering why he wears the glove sometimes and not others.

    1. Doesn't wear glove while contemplating killing Ben Solo
    2. Wears glove while watching school burn, presumably minutes or hours after contemplating killing Ben
    3. Doesn't wear glove while greeting Rey to Ach-To
    4. Does wear glove after meeting Rey
    5. Does appear to be wearing the glove after Rey leaves while projecting himself on Crait.
    6. Appears to Kylo Ren wearing glove even though he last saw Kylo (Ben) not wearing it.

I'm guessing it's just the director's whim that decided these things and they aren't meant to be significant.

He doesn't wear a glove during that very moment:

Having a glove for the most times is more work efficient. You don't need a CGI artist for a glove.

Woah! I thought he had the glove on in that scene! I sit corrected!

So...... No glove at the school. I'm wondering if he just wore the glove for Rey's sake. Maybe he thought it was awkward for her to have to look at it. I doubt it though. I didn't get the impression he had a problem with making her uncomfortable. I think it is exactly what you said, no CGI needed when glove is worn.

It looks like the artificial hand is shown when it will have an impact with the audience. Like the screenshot above, the reaction is, "Woah! That's definitely Luke! Look at the hand!" And when he meets Rey for the first time, the hand is showcased. But, just chatting with her about the force and whatever, not such a big deal to have the artificial hand on display.
