Someone please explain to me the difference between Snoke and Kylo and the Sith? Why is this trilogy just glossing over the differences? Snoke came off like Palpatine 2 in TLJ, so it's difficult to understand how the threat he and Kylo pose is any different at all from before.

One of my big concerns before this new trilogy was made was that the writers would be lazy and give us what I like to call the Dith. The Dith is my name for Sith without any discernible difference.

We're two films into this sequel trilogy now, and I'm shocked that all the Story Group, Rian, JJ, Kasdan, and Arndt could come up with is Dith. Disappointing.

Nice to see you here, SR. I never thought I'd have reason to speak of the Dith again. But apparently LFL and Johnson can only imitate what's come before.

Snoke has the same amazing backstory as Pre OT emperor too.

Seriously I'm in tears whenever I think about it. Because it doesn't exist.

I never thought I would say this, but Plagueis would be 1000x better than Snoke. Snoke is almost a kind of cypher, a zero. What does he stand for? Who the heck knows?

I value the truth more than being right. If only Rian Johnson fans could do the same.

Or maybe it's an alternate universe where Luke Skywalker is a miserable failure who helped create Kylo Ren, the Dith. ;)

As they say in the visual dictionary, the prophecy was that Anakin would destroy the Sith, he did, but that didn't mean the end of evil. The knights of Ren are something different, something new. Snoke is the in-betwener. We don't know who he is, or more importantly, what he was.

This : reintroducing the Siths in the ST would be a major retcon to the rest of the saga (well mostly the PT actually, as there is no mention of that stupid prophecy in the OT).

That's why Snoke & Ren are Siths in "all but name".

Looking at both the ST films now I think that the reason you don't see Snoke as distinct from the Sith is because he is working to reassemble the empire. He is mimicking it in strange detail. Kylo who is obviously evil and filled with hate. When he offers Rey "we'll rule the galaxy together" he wants to move beyond the Sith.

And we are yet to learn what motivates the Knights of Ren and why they follow Kylo as their leader.

It's quite simple actually, Snoke was concerned about the prophecy of the chosen one so he broke away from the Sith and changed the name of his cult to Dith. This was enough to fool the force, or at least that's what the idiotic writers of the ST seem to want us to believe...

I belive that althoug Snoke is not a Sith he is a very powerful force user that had the same flaws as the Sith and was betrayed by his own power and confidence as sidious was. The dark side of the force is a path that normally betrays you and so it did once again, i loved how poetic it was and how Kylo is now the baddest guy in town. He not only killed his father, he almost killed Finn, an entire Jedi Academy and well his master as Anakin would have wanted had he not been chopped in half by Obi Wan.

He is a dangerous one and i believe we already got a very well motivated complex character that is really really bad, and he is going to delve even further into the dark side, if IX starts three r four years after TLJ it wil be very interesting to see how his character has progressed into the fully powerful fledged villain we all want him to be

There isn't much difference. They both served the Dark Side and acted in accordance to that.
The difference is with their knowledge. Some of that will be tied up with Snoke's backstory. The rest is apparent on screen with the powers Snoke showed us.

The trilogy is not over you people!! 16 years after ROTJ and you still didn't know anything about who the Emperor was and suddenly now you even want to learn Snoke's social security number? Calm down, I believe we will get a lot more answers in the next episode, since JJ is directing and will most likely want to support his TFA ideas...

As to the actual question of the thread, it is obvious that we are leaving the Sith and the Jedi behind us and we are focusing on the Force and its many ways and possibilities... The Force is much more than the dogmatic view of the Jedi, or the narrow minded view of the Sith...

Im going to copy from another post of mine with edits. Hope that's okay.

The Sith have a code they live by.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
    Through passion, I gain strength.
    Through strength, I gain power.
    Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
    The Force shall free me

I dont see much of a difference between this code and the entire First Order, to be honest.
If Snoke and Kylo are not Sith then what code do they live by that contradicts the label of a Sith?
It would be nice to know the specifics.
    What makes them not Sith??
And why do they find the need to deviate from the Sith's ways as dark side users?
Is Disney simply trying to do away with the "Sith" word all together to introduce something new?

Episode IX : Revenge Of The Dith

Also in the TFA novelization it seemed the main reason Snoke was so intersted in young Ben is because he had potential in BOTH sides of the Force.

It's as if Snoke was trying to make KR somewhat grey? Now TLJ clearly states he just wants a 100% dark version 2.0 Vader.
