Solo Critic Bingo

You need to re-write "Who asked for this film?" as "This is a story that didn't need to be told." That's the one I keep seeing parroted over and over and over and over.

They always say it.

 

It kinda sounds like "Solo is going to be so great no one can say a bad thing about it". Which is, as in case of all SW movies, not true.

What do you think it is? I feel it's pretty obvious.

 

He's pointing out the returning staple types of armchair critique, i.e. viewer/audience criticism. Specifically, those returning type of criticisms which aren't really legitimate to begin with precisely because they have been used for every other previous star wars movie.

Great topic, @cawatrooper! Of course, at the other end of the critique spectrum you will also get: "Best Star Wars film since Empire!" I guarantee it

This is the first film every dedicated to Han Solo and we get a new Spider-Man/Batman every 3 years and yet "who asked for Han Solo" is a question that keeps popping up.

as one of the people who didn't ask for this movie (snert), i feel like there's a difference between a character adapted from other media who has been through many iterations and one created specifically for the screen by a particular actor. not even because the re-casting is so odious (it's unavoidable), but (for me) because i think the pick-up stories are high-risk in terms of altering what we fundamentally believe about characters (the problem of the PT), and also because Han just died. i feel like we're spackling over the grief before that story is even finished.

i absolutely don't mind more Han Solo stories (i almost unequivocally loved Last Shot). but so long as Harrison Ford is still around, he's still Han to me, firstly, and second, i need to know what's going to happen to his son before i can deal with seeing Han onscreen in another iteration just yet.

maybe Lucasfilm thought this would be a way for fans to deal with their grief (maybe that was their plan?).
i'm okay with the books and the comics and stuff, but a live action film just feels too "big" for my heart to handle just yet.
rather than honoring the character, i feel like it kicks Ford into the grave and shuffles some crumbles over him.

i know that's totally irrational, but that's just me. i feel like it's just too dang soon.
it's why i posted in the other Han Solo thread that seeing Ford and Ehrenreich together and Ford so proud of him was very consoling to me.

p.s. of course i will be there opening night in spite of all of this. i am eternally optimistic. : D

 

I understand this to a point, but so many characters are recast in stories that I can live without Ford. Ben Solo's fate doesn't really bother me either.

 

Han really is my favorite hero character from the OT, so obviously i have a lot of baggage here ~ hahahahaha

 

In my opinion this is finally realistic approach of the critics, I am going in theater relaxed and without to many expectations.

 

May I ask what the point of a bingo card like this is? Because it comes across to me as a bit smug, and dismissive of people. Is it common to do this for all movies, or only ones you feel you need to defend before it comes out?

 

Nope sorry it is not smug IMO when we hear these things ALL the time....I think this thing is gold. And put me down as in the camp of defending it as the other camp, those who have dismissed it and Ehrenreich already, is maddening to me

 

It just seems like a different way of contributing to a toxic community. Maybe smug wasn't the word, more condescending.

 

Bizarre that this satirical post bothers certain people.
