SPECULATION Star Wars Cluedo - What happened with the jacket?

I love speculation. But what I love more is fact finding, puzzling together events and scenes, answering question.

I know I am not alone in this. Thus I want to ask you to join me to create a rundown of the beginning of the movie for Finn and Poe, as it happens. (and ongoing. Later scenes have clues as well)

Does that already qualify as Star Wars Cluedo - What happened with the jacket?

It does now.


Why the beginning?

Easy:
- no matter how much we get right, even if it's a bit spoilerish, it won't spoil the movie or the fun.
- It will give us a headstart for the biggest question of the movie: WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT Maclunkey JACKET?!

- it's the one sequence of the movie we actually have a good amount of reliable information about.

So, if you have pictures, gifs, rumours, information, ideas, opinions: jump in!

I already have included most of the stuff floating around this forum. If you feel the need to be credited with coming up with a particular idea, gifing a certain gif or whatever: comment below.


Here we go:




Look at Poe, all uninjured and pretty.
This is the at the very beginning on Jakku, as the Stormtroopers attack. (There is a quick shot of him running for cover under his X-Wing in the Behind the Scenes video, see below)

Poe’s face and his jacket are the biggest clues we have.

So, look at his pretty face, ok, you won’t regret it.






Finn is part of that attack.




If you look here, there is a bloody handprint on his helmet.



As is Kylo Ren.




My guess is this is Kylo Ren confronting Poe and subduing him with some use of the Force. Not very nice, Kylo.


There is also a shot of a transport shuttle (one we see land in the shot below) flying toward the Star Destroyer, likely with Poe on board.




We do not exactly know what leads from this to Finn rescuing Poe. Does he see him as a means to an end? Or is Poe’s torture only yet another reason to get the hell out of Doge?


What we do know is that Kylo Ren puts Poe through hell. As someone who dabbles with artificial blood in their free time: that blood smear on Poe’s teeth is a very nice touch.




And next we see how incredibly unsubtle stormtroopers are.




This Gif is in slomo, in the original he is simply kinda panicky hurrying him along.

Very subtle, Mr Stormtrooper.

I strongly suspect this is Finn leading Poe away from torture and towards the hangar bay. I don’t think that this is him dropping Poe off to be tortured.

Because wow, cruel!

Looking at Poe, he is barely able to walk straight.

And he has the injuries to his face. I don’t know if they’re from the fight that lead to his capture or part of the torture, but they’re a wonderful way to establish timeline in the trailers.


Now, the angrily spoken line “I never should have rescued you” is one that action figure Finn says.


So yeah, they seem to manage to annoy each other just fine.

But then why take Poe with him?

Well... Pilot Finn is a soldier and with him taking a backseat in the Falcon, I don’t think he can fly. Poe on the other hand… Best pilot in the damn galaxy!

It is also rumored, based on the action figures as well, that going back to Jakku (the desert planet) is Poe’s idea, but that truly is speculation



Tie Fighter, inside a Star Destroyer hangar bay. Shooting at Imperials. That seems like exactly the kind of blast Poe would pull.
(Notice the flying Stormtrooper. That guy makes several appearances throughout the trailers and across a diverse set of locations and I suspect, there will be memes about it. If so, Fluffy said it first ^^)


The next sequence of events needs no words, it rather should beautifully stand alone.











And then that happens.


So, Finn is not in the TIE when it crashes. I can only assume, Poe is.


And here is where things get fuzzy again.




Does Finn just leave Poe inside the burning TIE fighter, assuming he is dead, but steals his jacket?

Does Poe tell him to take the jacket, disguise himself and do whatever the Blast Poe had been there to do in the first place? (rumor has it there is a connection to a certain light saber Finn will wield later in the movie)




What we do know is that Poe survives.





When you look closely here, you can see traces of the injuries to his face. Cuts and scrapes on his right cheek and below his mouth.


Also, he has the black X-Wing.


WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! THE BLACK Maclunkey X-WING!






Is this the first time they see each other again?

Is this the moment, Finn realizes Poe survived?


Based on his dumbfounded look, it might just as well be.


Or is Poe just snarking about Finn’s “Nice jacket?” or telling him “To be careful out there” or trying to piss him off with a bad tampered “Thanks for leaving me”?

Will they marry in the end?

Who knows? But aren’t we just dying to find out?


And the saga of mystery jacket continues!
