Perhaps this is potentially spoiler material, and it shall be revealed at the end of Episode IX that, in fact, everything was happening in our galaxy all the long.

And it was true. All of it.

    (death star):p

    :D

Perhaps they could commission time on the Hubble Space Telescope (http://www.hubblesite.org) and get some ultra high resolution images of Andromeda, or nebulae, and incorporate those elements into backdrops of space-situated scenes.

Even some of the more recent Lunar, Mars, Europa, and Pluto imagery could be adapted.

It would make for a nice and timely NASA tie-in with Star Wars.

I'm wondering if sending some actors up to the International Space Station is what they have in mind. In which case, that would arguably not be the best use of a film budget, and it would require any actors to go through very rigorous space training (unless they can get the astronauts already up there to film some scenes).

Even if they have something in mind more along the lines of the so-called "Vomit Comet" (http://www.nasa.gov/vision/space/preparingtravel/kc135onfinal.html), which would get you around 30 seconds of zero gravity, that's a lot to put actors through for something which can be quite convincingly recreated back on Earth, as they did in the movie Gravity: http://www.space.com/23073-gravity-movie-weightlessness-alfonso-cuaron.html

Maybe someone saw Chris Hadfield's great rendition of David Bowie's song "Space Oddity," which was filmed on the International Space Station:

The floating guitar, the backdrop of Earth... "practical effects" at their best!

I like them taking some hubble shots and incorporating them in space sequences, the only danger in doing so is that they give "Star Wars" a distinct 'space' in the galaxy which would reduce the magic of it.

Apollo 13 was filmed on that Vimit comet thing...I think hat what the director meant was filming some plates of the stars in space but
    he was most likely kidding.

Maybe JJ encouraged them to film some real solar flares ;)

Cause that is a JJ thing, "lens flares". Just the opening scenes of Episode 2 and 3 had more lensflares the TFA:D.

So they would need to put a film camera on board some satellite or other spacecraft.

Seems like a damned expensive way to get starfield plates - something that ILM has done fine since '77.

Use the money and build some amazing sets or practical creatures.

I rated this funny but think if this really happened. It would be existentially terrifying there are real space nazis with the ability to destroy planets and the willingness to do so and the Earth is absolutely defenseless. Hell forget the death star a single star destroyer could probably park itself in orbit and orbitally bombard the earth into smithereens!

They could at most send an IMAX camera and attach it to the ISS nad all to create real-world plates .
