So, I just made a post in another thread and was talking about the length of time that could pass between the title roll and the end credits for every given film--taking into account the transitions from one scene to another, travel time for the characters, and so forth.

In film, a fade-out usually notes a passage of time. In star wars, it's usually wipes, showing a flash to another thing going on at he same time, or a passage of time.

I thought it'd be fun and informative to get a general consensus as for how long time passes for each film. As far as I know, there isn't really a data-base for any of this, and it could be a good excercise.

    It there's a date-base time-line I have missed, please let me know.

For example, Attack of the clones starts with the assassination attempt on Padme, shows Obi try to track down the culprit, has him going to Kamino, then Geonosis before the big fight. Meanwhile, there's politics, Anakin taking Padme to a safe place, running to Tattooine to save his mother, then meeting up with Obi and the Jedi.

How long did Obi hide/stay prisoner while Yoda wrangles up all the troops and ships/vehicles for he assault?

Anyways, my thoughts below, and a a blank template below that for copy-paste.

    The Phantom Menace.
    Time: 4-6 Weeks.
Specific thoughts: Mostly travel time, and the time it would take to get the Senate together.

    Attack of the Clones
    Time: 3 months
Specific thoughts: There's a lot of investigation, travel time, "romance time," more travel time, and getting the whole fleet together.

    Revenge of the Sith
    Time: 1 month.
Specific thoughts: This is pretty straight forward--mostly travel (following Obi-wan) from Coruscant to Uppatua, to Coruscant, then to Mustafar.. then to Tattooine.

    A New Hope
    Time: 2 weeks.
Specific thoughts: Travel time, only, and a couple days on Tattoine before leaving it.

    Empire Strikes back
    Time: 6 Months+
Specific thoughts: The Falcon hiding in the asteroid field, and the sub-light travel time to Bespin.

    Return of the Jedi
    Time: A month.
Specific thoughts: Rescue of Han, meeting the fleet, travel to Endor.

I like your thoughts on it and don't have anything to add! :D

    EDIT --

Ok, I did have one thought. I've always been bothered by the timing of ESB. It feels as though it takes place over a matter of days or weeks, which would be fine if it weren't for Luke and his training. I like the idea of padding out the time by suggesting that the Millennium Falcon takes a long time to reach Bespin. Every little bit helps.

Very good post, certainly something that has only sparsely been discussed at best. What I find most interesting is that the time lengths you propose actually seem pretty logical... yet at the same time so short... with the exception of ESB.

On a side-note, I like the focus on real-time and considerations to account for it. It makes me think of games which involve a timescale and fast-travel, like Skyrim. Generally the scale is completely crazy, meaning a day passes in 30 minutes or whatever, and fast traveling yields massive time passage. There have actually been mods with alter both the passage of time during play and the passage of time during fast travel to get a somewhat closer to realistic result.
I've seen some debates on that in which discussion has turned to the training with Yoda/travel to Bespin part had to have taken a few weeks by itself. So it would be at least a month or more. I know in the movie it seems like days, but I feel it's more in between your estimate of two weeks max and his estimate of 6 months.

very interesting sir, i agree that ep 5 may have been 6 months....or longer. one of the greatest questions in star wars is how long did yoda take to transform luke from farm boy to Jedi? sure he had lots of natural ability but even that takes time to mold into the perfect mold.

BTW congratulations, the 1030th has select this as the thread of the week and will add it to our featured threads, and advertise it on Facebook!

I am pretty sure it was already canon that with the Falcon's hyperdrive going a bit wacky, they could only make short jumps, which took over a month

It's funny, I *just* came across this last night. Apparently it was in the ESB novelization?
