The Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed Star Wars movie has had its initial script written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, and revised by Steven Knight, but despite being formally announced at Star Wars Celebration a few days ago, the script needs a little bit of work before it's able to start shooting. The story of the film will feature Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker in a pivotal role in a narrative set 15 years after the end of the sequel trilogy.

In an interview with Yahoo, Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that progress on the new Rey-centric Star Wars film is pretty far along, though the script hasn't yet been completed. By Kennedy's estimates, the script -- or at least the current draft -- will likely be done in roughly 45 days, or six weeks and change:

In practical terms, that means the script ought to be finished by about May 25 or thereabouts. Writer Steven Knight will likely have plenty of time to get his work done and then shift focus to the screenplay on the Vertigo remake that he's also developing, though of course, he will presumably also be involved with further revisions.

So the project, showcasing Rey picking up where Luke Skywalker left off and rebuilding the Jedi Order from the ashes of the last one, is clearly something that Lucasfilm has been developing for a while. However, Kennedy notes that the project didn't have a definitive 'tipping point' leading to its creation; it just sort of came together as a result of a number of conversations about where to take some of the sequel trilogy's story threads and characters next:

Whether that idea involves other returning Star Wars characters, both major and minor, remains to be seen. Although, in her own words, 'It's entirely possible to see some people come back.'

The next Star Wars movies are currently scheduled to release on December 19, 2025, and December 17, 2027. It is expected, but not confirmed, that the movie starring Rey will take the former date.

There are a couple of read-between-the-lines things here as I see it. What KK is saying, without giving the negative pessimism any credibility, is that this project is indeed well beyond the talking about it stage. This movie is getting made. There is a considerable amount of time, money and reputation tied up in this particular project. This was the primary announcement for the Movie Side of LFL. The other two were just SW gravy.

Another "translation" here is that probably they are still in negotiations with other stars, like Boyega, Isaac, maybe even Driver and Tran, so their involvement or level of involvement will impact the script, obviously. I feel fairly certain if any of these actors were already committed, they would have been on stage Friday. Hopefully the rumors and speculation about the new leads will be clarified and confirmed soon as well. I would imagine the LFL strategy as of right now is to try and stay two steps ahead of any possible naysayers and rumors that may cause doubt until they can make some more solid announcements.

For what it's worth, Daisy Ridley was seen visiting LF/Disney (can't remember which) last year, so pre-prod for this film could indeed have been going on for a while. But who knows.

As for wether the rest of the gang returns, that depends on the scope and type of movie. An smaller, introvert, self-searching Force exploration piece might not require the same size cast as an epic saving-the-galaxy-again spectacle, for instance.

Me personally, I'm not looking for a galaxy saver or an episode X. I want a well thought out stand alone story with much gravitas featuring the imperfection of Rey and her struggles as she faces the true reality of her endeavors.

Kennedy said they had been working on it for a couple of years. They were likely prepared to announce this as the 2025 December release, but Lindelof script didn't pass the cut. The good news is the scoped out the idea for how they want to move forward, but the bad news they haven't got the script right yet. I'm curious if Knight is able to pull this out since he's kind of an usual choice for Star Wars.

I'm curious as to why they've decided a 15 year time jump...it seems it's taking Rey a VERY long time to rebuild the Jedi order!

My guess -- and it's an absolute guess -- is that they want some space behind the show to bulid up around the movie. Instead of frontloading a SW with a whole lot of exposition, you set up only what is needed and leave room for adding more context later. Also, it is easy to age an actor up a bit, and by pushing the Rey movie forward a bit, they allow Daisy Ridley to catch up with future installments much better; sort of like how it was for Ian McDiarmid going into the PT.

Again, total guesswork on my part, though. We don't know anything at this point, of course.

15 years isn't that long actually. Rey has to finish her studies first, she probably has to look for Jedi stuff worth teaching and finally she has to find force sensitive people.
Furthermore Daisy Ridley's real age kinda matches that time jump. Rey was 20 in TROS. Daisy Ridley will be 32 when they start shooting the Rey movie.

This is exactly my thought and wish as well. Skip the origin story and exposition stuff and jump right into action. Kinda like ANH did.

Indeed! It's kinda like what they did with all the start-films; ANH, TPM, TFA.

The PT/OT/ST all feature young force users training on the force. It kind of make sense to skip that if Rey has several trained force users to contend with for the future of the Jedi Order. As Rey trains force users and as force users come out of hiding... who decides who is a Jedi? Why would Rey get that right. Who elected her? Also, force ghosts... who do they talk to? Do they only talk to people they new in life?

THIS Please this. I want to say leave the Skywalker saga where it is, but there is that pesky little line from the end of ROS…
Regardless, I hope they leave the Skywalker saga where it is, create a new vision for the galaxy, and maybe don’t fully disregard some amazing legends content that’s out there.

I also feel the 15 year gap serves this as well. A lot can change in 15 years, it gives the galaxy time away from the events of ROS and allows them to create an interesting unique version of things and leaves room to flesh out the details of how they got there later.

Yes! It's all about the approach. Not indulging in the "next trilogy" talk is key to show that Kennedy and LFL are changing their approach to SW movie making. Just make A movie. Tell one story. That can be built on and added to later, or not. This mentality that SW movies have to be made in trilogies is putting an unfair disadvantage on the creators. That's why I feel like the announcement at Celebration was KK's version of compromising what they think the fans want with what is just reasonable business. If they had only announced the Rey movie, it could have, probably would have, launched the fandom into mass speculation about "The Rey Trilogy". Now, instead there are three different projects, set in three different eras, that if nothing else, can evenly distribute the mania.
