Taika Waititi was recently interviewed by Total Film to promote the new movie Lightyear, from Pixar, and the topic of his Star Wars film was brought up. The director said that he's creating an entirely new ensemble of characters for his movie and expanding the galaxy with it.

When asked about Kathleen Kennedy's comments from last month, where she said that Star Wars needs to expand beyond the Skywalker Saga, Taika Waititi said the following:

Waititi also revealed recently that he's still writing and developing the storyline of his movie, which is not great news for those who were hoping filming would begin this year. Kennedy also said last month that internally they are aiming to release it by December 2023, though they are not attaching themselves to that date just yet. A recent report hinted that the movie could be gearing up to film in L.A., which makes sense -- the city has three Volumes, and Waititi has already worked with the StageCraft technology on his episode of The Mandalorian season 1 and while filming the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

Waititi is currently promoting Pixar's Lightyear, followed by Thor: Love and Thunder, so expect him to be asked more about his Star Wars movie in the weeks ahead, and as always we'll keep you updated on the latest.

SW is no longer about Lucas, or his characters, for better or for worse.
Anyone expecting something 'deep'...forget it. Waitiiti specialises in comedy.

That's why I had a 'WTF?' moment when I read that KK was 'aiming' to release it by December 2023. This Star Wars film for crying out loud. There's literally no chance that Waititi's SW film will be released next year. None. Nadda. Zero.

I have to say, I'm baffled how quiet things have gone on the ST characters future...I personally am not a fan of Finn, Rey and Poe post TROS, my fave character is gone, but it's weird that DLF haven't said a single thing about the fate of Rey and her friends post TROS. They haven't even made any books or comic books set post TROS, and Waititi is creating his own characters.
The EU churned out hundreds of books and comics plus animated series post ROTJ. What are Disney doing?

Same here, I don't see it happening. He once said that he's not interested in making a Star Wars movie, because he likes to finish projects. I really hope they don't push for a release December 23 just because.

Especially because Kathleen Kennedy has been quoted as saying in the aftermath of their film-making hiatus that they've come to realize that making a Star Wars film is not your normal committment for a director and his or her creative team. Given what's involved, it's a five or six year thing.

A 2023 release would be a major contradiction of her earlier comment about Star Wars film-making.

The Dawn of the Jedi stuff is out there. Plenty of good ideas could be gleaned from those stories.

As excited as I am to see what he comes up with, Taika isn't going to get the December 2023 slot... At this point the only viable option (IMHO) would be to see some of our friends from the Mando-verse in a feature film.

And even that sounds like "one in a million" type of odds at this point.
