Both of the first films in the other trilogies were - in a way - stand-alone movies. ANH was rescue the princess, destroy the super weapon. TPM was...well some convoluted politico-economic storyline with some battle droids thrown into the mix. Anywho...the point being that although there were ties to the rest of their trilogies (i.e. setting up the who is the Sith Lord question at the end of TPM), they could exist as separate stories on their own.

The closest we've come to a simple one-liner on what TFA is about is "find Luke". But is that it? Is that the boiled down essence of Star Wars 7? Or is there something else? Stop the Empire from finding x or something else? Does anyone have a better sense of this?

The reason I ask is that given everything we are hearing - this is NOT a true stand-alone. It seems to be more in line with The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings - the first section of a longer story.

I think the new film will (or should) be most like TESB in tone. We are picking up after a grand finale which could (or should) really have been the end of the story - the ultimate weapon has been destroyed, the Empire has been overthrown, medals handed out, Ewoks dancing...
The original Star Wars was the only one intentionally made to function as a standalone, and it does on those terms.
By rights, TFA should see the Empire in the same situation the Rebellion were in at the start of TESB...

It will be for sure different in that it is a continuance but it still needs a set up. Obviously it's not just about Luke missing. It's about a new threat and a new generation of heroes to stop it. Plus betrayal, etc.

So I'd say for most of the movie it is about Han, Leia, Chewie, new heroes, new threat, new weapon and missing and finding Luke who is the wise powerful crazy Jedi who knows the answer on how to solve the problems

I would love if the Episode 7 ended on a big twist that really set up the trilogy. Now of course we are never going to have an 'I am your father' twist again, but something that kind of leaves everyone hanging for Episode 8.

I will continue to say this is why I have always wanted the ST over the PT, because the story possibilities are endless along with the added suspense. We all knew where we were going with the PT, as we just wondered HOW everything played out. With the ST, we don't know how everything will play out, we won't know who dies, and we won't know where story is going either.

Hey WillyBobo! Haven't been around much - work and life and all that interuppted Star Wars juju.

jedi77-83 - This is a great point. In some ways the PT was destined to disappoint no matter what happened. Everyone (of a certain age) had already fantasized over what Anakin's fall would be like. We all had an "image" in our minds of what that would look like. And of course it didn't match. Prequels are tough beasts and George should probably have left that one alone and just moved on.

That all said - the fact that we have had the Prequels has tremendously raised the bar for these new movies - because they were so awful these new movies have to redeem Star Wars. And - so far - knock on wood - it seems like they are on the way to that.

I think the ST will feel new but also very classic, they wont just do it like in ANH or ESB, they will more likely create the same vintage feeling we all love from 1977.
I mean they cant just "repeat" everything like micheal bay does with Transformers. :)

I wonder if there will be any post-credit scenes like in the Marvel films. The closest we came to one was the end of TPM's credits, where you could hear the Imperial March and Vader's breathing.

It probably will end on the villains revealing their true strength or hinting at it, and making our heroes understand that they're in for a long tough ride, not just some splash in the pan, and maybe we won´t realize the villain´s true strength until the middle of EP IX

I hope not, Star Wars is its own thing. It doesn't need to copy Marvel by putting a post credit scene for the spin off movie or whatever at the end of the movie.

    Agreed.

While those post credit scenes have become sort of a fun thing to look out for in the Marvel universe of movies, I think it would drag Star Wars down to a level below the standards they are currently - and should be - held to. Regardless of anyone's opinion of the PT, Star Wars as a whole is a classic saga unmatched by any other, IMHO.

    There is a long article posted on the website here explaining a few "points" reportedly from the 2nd draft of the Abrams/Kasdan script;
Leia is the supreme leader of the "galactic republic".
She and Han Solo are NOT together or a couple.
Solo is a "retired" fleet general or "reserve commander"(that's how he has the big Super Star Destroyer).
Luke's been missing/MIA for about 10 years or so.
Luke, reportedly has no kids or off-spring.
The "Sith Homeworld" is the reported site of the "Acient Fear" super-weapon that can wipe out star systems or planets.
The Imperial Empire IS still a threat & is functioning but at a lower, less active pace. Like a insurgency or "Cold War". It's possible(my words) that these factions have mercenaries or conscripts rather than clones or die-hard loyalists.
That might explain the Boyaga "shadow-trooper" character & his attitude/motivators.
