By then, I feel like Yoda was in a league of his own. He knew he had to drop the dogma and show Luke the grandeur and power of the living force

You know....Luke made a mistake going to Cloud City to meet Vader, but I loved the way he put his friends first...that's what I call a mate! And ironically...at the end, it was for the best. Even Yoda acknowledged that in ROTJ when he told him he didn't need any more training.

But Luke didn't put his friends first when he went to Dagobah in the first place. He split from the in the middle of the evacuation of Hoth while they were still under attack from Vader and the Empire because he was mad keen on getting his Jedi career kick started (finally). He essentially went AWOL in the midst of a battle. Same as when he split from them on Endor, in order to protect them. Which he later did also following Ben's defection.

All the stuff about how Luke is so selfless and so would always or would never etc, etc are somewhat undue not even necessary to understand his character.

Luke had a powerful force vision. To him it seemed like a dire personal warning and the was convinced that the only reason he was given that vision was that he had to go there and he had to rescue them or they would all die if he didn't. I don't believe Luke even needs to be more concerned for his friends than the average person for him to have the appeal he has. He's no more concerned or committed for them than Han and Leia are for him when they learn that Vader has set a trap for Luke.

As LucasFilm continues to retcon Luke's character to fit the STs, we're becoming more aware that both Anakin and Luke have exhibited more than their fair share of self-conceit (quite naturally, I might add, given how they've both been lauded as 'The Chosen One,' though for very different reasons.)

There's an interesting interview on the TLJ blu ray with Johnson about why Luke went into exile; back to ESB, Luke was the last to leave Hoth (I read the tie in novel) therefore knew everyone was safely on their way before he split to go to Dagobah.

The Empire Strikes Back still, and always will be, the greatest sequel ever made, for me.

James Cameron's Aliens is my second favored sequel, propelling the myth to higher standards.

The Original Star Wars now subtitled ANH will always be, my favorite sci-fi film subjectively, because of my fond memories as a child seeing the trailer after schooling for the first time, inherently knowing I had to watch that film, as an avid watcher of sci-fi shows like Star Trek.

My mom was excited for me as well, it was the first time, I asked her to go to the theatre.

I instantly got it. This film was created for individuals like me.

My sister would complain when I got to the tv first, why do you like this stuff?

Star Trek presented an optimistic future for the human race, and Star Wars propelled my imagination.

I vicariously lived through Luke Skywalker, gazing at the binary sunset, I yearned for more...

Star Wars to me represented hope, forgiveness and how we are all fallible but the worst of us can change.
    I loved it.:):(

TESB wasn't the big hit that Star Wars was, but it wasn't anywhere near "hated" as some people like to think. In fact it was mostly loved by fans, it was the media that was split over the movie, claiming they didn't understand why it didn't have a proper ending even though it was known back then Empire was the middle part of a trilogy. As far the comparisons to TLJ go, considering we now know Disney never had a plan and Johnson was allowed to do he wanted, it's easy to see why their was such a backlash and why anyone would actually defend that is what really makes no sense.

    Here's some cool BTS footage/commentary.

At 6:13 Mark Hamill's opinion of the film is why it's my favorite. In my first star wars experience, the good guys lose. I love that. The good guys don't win every battle which made TESB even more meaningful to me.
