We've just been given our first in-depth look at the upcoming media-spanning story set in a galaxy far, far away. The entire first chapter of Star Wars: The High Republic - Light of the Jedi has been released, and it chronicles a critical moment in the history of Star Wars canon.

This excerpt from Charles Soule's upcoming novel comes from IGN, painting a unique picture of what the galaxy used to be. It also reveals some details about a catastrophic event that kicks off the story of the novel. Soule describes it as 'the moment that changes The High Republic forever.' If you'd rather go into the book blind, I'd avoid reading this first look. But for those (like me) who can't wait for this series, the chapter is a fascinating glimpse at a new era in Star Wars, and depicts an event that shaped the galaxy forever. Take a look at a selection of the passage below:

The release of the novel was recently pushed to January 2021, so this excerpt will have to whet our appetites in the interim. For now, check out the entire first chapter over at IGN.

Good start, but surprised they would put out a sample chapter so far out. Seems like now would have been the time to release a chapter marketing the books for the original release date.

I haven't been reading any of the books since Disney took over, but I think I'm going to give these a shot. If I have time...

You have missed some great books. Especially the books by Claudia Gray.

That's I keep being told, haha.
I don't know if it's the right way to express it, but I feel like I've wasted so much time reading the now Legends stories post OT, I almost don't want to read what's new. I don't mind learning the new facts, it just seems like a waste of time.

But with the High Republic era, it's a brand new chapter that hasn't had as much written about it, even in the old EU. This just seems fresh, and it's exciting to me.

My thoughts after reading this first chapter:
    - I’m still not fond of the idea of “frontier jedi” as well as the fact that the outer rim is unexplored. It seems like a convenient way to focus on the “lived-in beat-up Western” look of the Original Trilogy; I am heartbroken that they are going this direction, because I was craving more exploration in the day-to-day dealings of Jedi in the “city,” Coruscant and the Republic... which is why (I assumed) this is called THE HIGH REPUBLIC. By far, the most intriguing paragraph in the entire chapter was the first paragraph, which sounded so hopeful, rich in culture and history. Oh well, maybe later books will elaborate on this...

-What is the “event” that acts as a catalyst of the books? Flying debris in hyperspace lanes? I take it hyperspace travel is dangerous in this day and age? Was it a force of nature or group of “bad guys” (the Nyles perhaps?) who are wrecking havoc on the hyperspace lanes? Chapter didn’t say.

-Is anyone from this first chapter going to make it out alive? So many adventure novels tend to do this: start with a slam-bang action sequence, kill off characters, and then move on to the real meat of the plot in chapter 2 and onwards...

-Nice to see the Chancellor’s name mentioned. This was by far the most interesting part of the chapter. I haven’t heard the mention of that character before, so I’m assuming it is a creation of this novel.

This looks very promising. (I have some writery issues with the writing, but those doesn't count for anyone but writers and editors). I'm SO looking forward to this!

I'm currently reading some EU books (Hand of Thrawn) and I've recently read a couple of Disney SW books (Weapon of the Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure, & Bloodlines), but this sounds more promising than any of those. Color me exited! :D

My take-away from this is that the "redish tinge" is NOT supposed to be hyperspace debris, but an early symptom of whatever the catastrophy is going to be. I assume the catastrophy is going to have a sentient bad-guys origin.

I picture this hyperspace accident to be some kind of ‘highway robbery’ staged by some bad guys. I’m betting it’s the Nyles, but you guys may be right in saying it’s pirates or Hutts.
One thing I don’t understand is that Lucasfilm publishing said the new “bad guys” will be the one thing Jedi fear in this new era. But for the life of me, I don’t see what is so threatening about space pirates, Nyles, Hutts. They don’t appear to be as menacing as Sith. The only possibility I can deduce is that the Nyles (and other bad guys) are random terrorists, like the Joker in DC comics. The Jedi, who symbolize unity, structure, and “codes” may be bewildered when dealing with senseless acts of violence, similar to how the US initially felt during the September 11 attacks.
