The book is quite good. I liked the film, but I really like the way, as someone else mentioned already, the author fills in the blanks, the things which just can't truly be conveyed in a film. The snippet into Ben, from Leia's point of view. The way Luke rejected the Jedi's views on attachments (although it is interested to note HE himself is not married). I don't know if it will change any minds, but it does reaffirm my love for the film.

As for Snoke, I hope we get a book on his backstory. I expect we might see something on him in IX, but I would also like a book which can delve deeper into who this guy is/was.

    Have just finished it.
I actually prefer the Ach-To nun scene at the end to Broom Boy.

So in the past I have stayed away from the novelizations, but something made me pick this one up. I thought it was great. It really did add to the movie and show things that you can't do in film. I loved Captain Canady in the movie for the short amount of time he was on screen. He was great in this as well. I hope we can get him in something else set before VII. The new Snoke info was awesome.

Except it worked in the novel with the inner monologue and history, in the movie it would be just caretakers cleaning up. ;)

So I may have missed this, but has the Inferno squad Leia thinks about, when thinking about who could answer the distress call they sent out on Crait, been mentioned somewhere else in canon? I know the Empire had an Inferno squad, but I don't remember one for the Resistance.

    they were in Battlefront, where:
with one notable exception they all turned on the Empire.
so there's a chance they're still out there somewhere.

There is no Inferno squad, but Leia had sent Zay, Iden Versio and Del Meeko's daughter (they died), together with their Duros friend Shriv to search for help in the Outer Rim just before the evacuation of D'Qar. Separately, it seems, she sent Poe's Black Squadron (Snap, Jessica Pava and the rest).

A lot in the first passage--1. confirmation Snoke was exploiting Ben since he was a child and 2. what the heck is up with Snoke manipulating Luke?

It seems as though Snoke thought Luke was wise not to rebuild the Jedi as it was but rather to find its roots and its "larger truths." But part of his plan with Ben was to get Luke to start up the training temple when Ben was sent to him, and then to destroy it and Luke along with it via Ben. Is that what others got out of that?

    1. Maybe more as preteen/teenager when those feelings of 'inadequacy and abandonment' showed up, so Snoke can exploit them.2. I think he manipulated the circumstances. He manipulated Ben who started to act out frightening Leia and Han and Luke therefore decided to help him and rebuild the order in the process. And then things snowballed from there.

Well, "child" and "boy" point to child and boy, but they can be relative terms. I do wonder what Snoke's "vast store of knowledge" was that he drew on? To me it seems as though it would at least partially be invading Ben's mind in some way--you would need a ton of Force skill for that. There's no way Leia and Han, even distracted or distant, would have let a predator physically near their child if they knew what was going on.

Have you seen him? They wouldn't let Snoke near Ben even if they didn't know he was a predator. :p

For sure, the manipulation wasn't in person, but via Force. I think Snoke was monitoring Ben since he was a child and discovered his power, but started 'skyping' him when he sensed those mentioned insecurities. That's how the predators work, they find a weakness and jump on it.

Could be. I don't think we can eliminate the possibility that the Aftermath books hint at--that perhaps Ben was troubled before he was born by another presence? There is even a hint of it again from Leia's POV on p. 81 of the hard copy of the novelization:

There's Leia's worry to take advantage of. And either Snoke messing with Ben, causing him distress, or Ben's own light-dark conflict causing distress. Either way, a "weakness" to exploit.

I think it's either Snoke probing or it's just as Luke said (in the same novel and in TLJ), "powerful light, powerful darkness" or was it "brighter the light, more powerful darkness" in the novel, I don't remember. We all have darkness in us or potential for it. If only Luke listened to his wisdom.

I don't think this was a third party, but what do I know? Maybe it's Snoke's twin. :D

TPTB are so darn coy and the books are so darn ambiguous about all this... :p

So the squad doesn't exist or it just hasn't been in anything outside of the novelization? Not really sure how it works with the novellizations because I know they always say go with the movie over books when considering what is canon, but this isn't something they could have shown on screen because it's internal monologue.

Here is the passage from the book.

On purpose, I'm sure, for someone to pick up the baton and tell the story later on. Until then, we speculate.

They existed in the book, than in the game turned on the Empire - the two of them, Iden and Del Meeko. One (Hask) stayed with the Empire and later FO. But, they are all dead now, including Hask, so Squad does not exist. I think Leia thinks about their daughter and friend, but is not naming them.

Thanks I knew all the stuff about the Empire's Inferno squad.
I was just asking if the Resistance had a squad named Inferno squad, and if I had missed it before. I think that Leia just using that instead of naming them makes sense and I like that as the reason why it's mentioned.

I just assumed that Leia was referring to Iden & Del Meeko Daughter who now leads a Resistance Inferno Squad named in her parents honour.
