The title of Darth has been one passed from Master to Apprentice among those who practice the Dark Side, namely the Sith. But where did this title which has been used bu the most brutal and terrifying Sith Lords come from?

The answer is not exactly known:

“Many of the Dark Lords of the Sith chose to add the Darth honorific to their name. The very word has become synonymous with the wondrous power of the dark side. However, the origins of the word are unclear. While many see Darth as nothing more than a contraction of Dark Lord of the Sith, there is some evidence for a deeper interpretation of the term. Darth Revan and Darth Malak are generally believed to be the first Dark Lords to have used the title. Given that much of their power was derived from the Star Forge, a creation of the extinct Rakata species, some historians see Darth as a corruption of Daritha, the Rakatan word for “emperor.” Similarly, others note that the word for “triumph” or “conquest” in Rakatan is darr, and the word for “death” is tah. This has led to theories that Darth is derived from darr tah and means “triumph over death” or “immortal.” A competing theory asserts that the true meaning of darr tah is “conquest through death”… of one’s enemies.” (Jedi vs Sith, The Darth Title, Windham).

The hustory and use of the title Darth is shrouded in mystery, as is the nature of the Dark Side of the Force. There can be no doubt that the title of Darth and its significance is major to both Legends and Canon.

Finally, who is your favorite Darth?

Darth Vader, Darth Malgus, Darth Revan, Darth Scourge (even though he's usually referred to as Scourge or Lord Scourge)

What are his attributes? Like does he have a massive temper, does he wear a mask or not?

I have become very intrigued by Darth Marr who is an unorthodox Sith.

Unlike his contemporaries Darth Marr did not hate the Jedi, but saw them as worthy rivals, and considered Satale Shan his equal.

Scourge was a sith pureblood. No mask. Tall, strong, skilled in combat. A warrior. Definitely smart despite appearing to be a brute.

In reality, Darth has no translation. It was a word invented by George Lucas to make his 'dark' character sound menacing, and swapped out the 'k' for an 'th' on the end. Contrary to public belief, Darth is not Dutch or German for 'dark'.

@Kato Sai... this may seem like an obvious question, but why did you create this poll WITHOUT listing Vader in it?!?!

That is probably why Darth’s meaning is hard to divine even in Legends. Vader comes from Vater in German, meaning Father (Pater in Latin). You are right Darth isn’t German.

Lol I realized that too late and can’t edit the poll now. You can choose other at the bottom of the poll and write in Vader. ;)

The greatest Sith is Darth Krayt:

His vision with the Rule of One was a much needed reform in our Sith Order.

Am Dutch, can confirm Darth isn't a Dutch word.

    Vader means father, though.

It's a level-up screen from the interactive comic here satirizing progression in video games. As for the character himself, Saber's an interesting guy within the context of the Star Wars mythos. He is a Sith Lord from the twilight years of their Empire who harbors a unique interpretation of the tenets that the Sith were founded on. A champion of the common folk. A shield against the Jedi. An uncompromising icon of honor in a society that's begun to crumble underneath its venomous ideology. He is essentially the antithesis of Palpatine. A Sith Moses if you will.

One of the most interesting aspects about his role in the Galaxy Far Far Away's grand overarching narrative is that (if we assume Darth Bane's basic journey is canon in both continuities) he and Bane, as contemporaries, are both destined to witness the fall of their entire civilization - but the lessons they take from that fall are in a direct contrast to one another. As we know, Bane eventually goes on to found the Rule of Two and takes his vengeance on the Jedi Order through Palpatine in the prequel era, but Saber's journey, and ultimately the destiny of the Sith Empire's citizens - the subjects he was sworn to defend - is one that's still left unexplored.

To sum up: Darth Bane was driven by his hatred for the Jedi. Darth Saber was driven by his love for his people. It's classic Star Wars.

Darth Vader was called "DARK Vador" on the original European 'tri-logo' action figures too, so there is precedent for thinking Darth means 'Dark' and that his name means "Dark Father".

Just my 2 cents, but I think he purposefully left Vader out because, let's be honest, he would just dominate the poll. This way it's maybe more interesting?

I'm picking Darth Saber though. The other Darths are great and iconic in their own right, but Saber has the big advantage of being soooo easy to root for. He is the quintessential Sith hero surrounded by a gallery of bigtime Sith villains.
