The Secret Writer

Well, it's official. We have a secret writer for the super secret 2020 movie.

And... that's it.

Well, I guess if you're reading this, you probably want me to extrapolate some fan theory about what all this means. Well, damned if I know.

Okay, I do have a few crazy theories.

Let's get Captian Obvious out of the way first: LFL doesn't want to dilute fan focus and doesn't want to kill the speculation hype for the rest of "Phase 1".. at least not yet.

Now onto conspiracy theory. They may be playing this close to the chest for several reasons. One possiblity is that the R1 reshoots were designed to alter the fate of many of the R1 team, leaving it viable for a sequel. We have seen R1 shrink on promo posters over the recent months, and now the word 'interesting' is used to describe Gareth's storytelling. Much of the reshoots has been rumored to add character moments. And while a lot of you want to see Darth Vader turn them into redshirts, a viable R1 team is a potential key to a gold mine of OT era films. So to bring this back to 2020, if LFL can generate enough buzz with R1's characters as they did with TFA then they have an appealing investor prospect for the 2020 film.. just with a different director.

Another possiblity is the future of Star Wars itself. As Iger made clear in his moneycall, they got film projects far beyond IX, and it doesn't take a leap of logic to figure that X is among those projects. What the trilogies currently lack, though, is a "bridge film" to span the gaps and to give a proper backstory and guide to the next trilogy. We rely instead on books, video games, and now TV shows. I don't really think they persue something like this so soon after IX but ICBW.

Of course, they might be making a movie about what in the galaxy happened to Lando...

 

Life's had me thinking lately that while the marvel side is leaking film titles like the Titanic it has put, the radio silence on this film is in (wait for it...) Stark contrast.. It just seems too long if your just going for a fan service movie.

As for R1, well, I personally want them to ship this to netflix. They keep talking about a live action star wars TV show, well... Here's your grownup version of Rebels. But they seem to be waiting for R1 to drop before they do anything with this movie, which does make me start thinking just what their game plan on 2020 is. Maybe they have several game plans and they want feedback on R1 before they make their final play call. That's certainly okay because, anticipating a Christmas release, they got ~4 years for this project.
I think if they came out and said "It's Kenobi" there would be a lot of cheers, a lot of boos, and not an ounce of anticipation would be lost for R1 or The Ocho or Fan Service. But if they came out and said "R2" well.. you can kinda see how that would impact R1 in a negative way. It would kill a lot of suspense right there.
